Garage looks great as always Rick.

How do you go about washing your microfibers and pads? I see Griot's sells a particular soap for this and a google search has turned up dye free/scent free soaps to wash with. Just wondering what your process is?

Bret, my process I follow to keep MF and pads clean is pretty basic. I used to use Griot's Garage Microfiber detergent but I am now using a similar product by 3M. Just add it to the washing machine and then I dry them using the regular dry cycle in the dryer. I separate all my towels into two loads, those that are really dirty and my finer towels that don't come into contact with heavily dirty parts of the car.

I did this with my first batch of MicroFibre towels, and found them to be less absorbent. Turns out dryer heat fuses the MF fibers together. They can stand hot water but not a hot laundry dryer.

Now I run the drier empty on low for a minute to get it warm, then tumble dry on cool. If wrung out well first they still get dry but it takes a little longer.

I will take that advice to heart. I have had some of my MF's for years and they seem to be performing well, but I respect science so I will set my dryer to a cooler temp next time. Good looking out!

When I need any MF to be particularly absorbent, I will simply get it wet and wring it out first. I will dry my car with two standard size towels that have been pre-soaked and then wrung out. The initial soaking relaxes all the fibers in the towel and brings them back to their full absorbency.

Thanks for the reply Rick. I watched several videos on MF washing and drying on youtube and found different styles. One guy even has a spare washer and dryer in his basement just for MF towels.

I bought some dye free/scent free Purex to use. I don't have a ton of expensive quality towels yet. But I did read from everybody I researched to put the dryer on low heat.

This is the product that I use for washing all of my towels. I have had really good luck with it removing polish residue, grease, and other contaminants from the towels.

I do have to say however, that I make sure and use my towels for specific purposes. I color coded them for their uses, so I don't find myself trying to remove polish from a recently polished surface with a towel that I had previously used to clean wheels or remove child detritus from an interior. That could have disastrous results.

How do you like that pegboard? Any issues with the hooks falling out when you remove an item? I assume it's a lot thinner than regular pegboard.

I like the pegboard a lot. You are right, it is a lot thinner than your conventional wood pegboard, and that does me the odd hook will fall out when I reach for a tool. If I had a LOT of tools on pegboard it would drive me crazy, but the few I do have mounted on this stuff isn't a big deal.

LOVE my Quickjack. I've used it 10-12 times and it has performed flawlessly. I especially love that it is safe to use on the RaceDeck floor. I store the two main parts just beneath my mat wash wall. A friend of mine is supposed to be making me some metal stands for them, but he's be MIA for a while now. I used to hid one side of the lift under my rolling chest and the other behind my two craftsman carts (on its side), but with one car I don't really need to have it hidden away.

Thanks for the kind words. The clock is just something I picked up at a furniture store and I slapped a TAG Heuer decal on it to make people think I'm rich.

I'm on Spring Break so I've had some time to putter around in the garage. Did a bit of a reshuffle with my polishers. I used to house them in a drawer, but now I can stand back and marvel at them!

I too have the Flex polishers, I love the new 3" orbital they came out with, had an opportunity to utilize it several times already. My wife bought this for me a year ago as a X-mas gift, in addition to the 6" Flex I already own. That sir, is mighty fine collection of polishers, and pad selection!

I have a similar Cman 6ft workbench. I like the carpet you put on the top...nice touch! I assume you purchased some outdoor carpet, but how did you attach? Glue?

I ask if you have to remove or clean it, would it pull up the top layer of the bench?

I have always had a fondness for zip ties. I recently ran out of black, though! New shipment of black 8"ers on order.

Yes, it is outdoor carpet you buy on the roll at your local big box store. I'm very happy with how it has performed in my garage. I just used carpet tape to attach it to the bench top. I've never had to remove the carpet for cleaning, but it wouldn't be hard with the indoor use type of carpet tape by 3M. Removing the tape from the bench would take a bit of elbow grease, but nothing too major.

I'm digging the look with the velcro straps!

I like the way your peg board looks, but I'm afraid here in the Arizona Desert area, I'd end up with dust all over those great looking polishers (or whatever I hung up). I'm not sure I'd leave them out like that, I'd probably want them in a cabinet or drawer. Unless I was ok with dusting them once every few weeks?

I'm constantly in awe of your garage. Seeing that you are in Calgary means I know I can achieve similar results for organization and cleanliness! I do have a question though - do you ever do any wood working in your garage? Sawdust is the enemy and I am curious if you have a strategy to mitigate.

My garage is a dual purpose wood/metal shop as well as for auto work and detailing. However I'm not sure I can ever keep it tidy enough with sawdust running free.

Oh and one more question - where do you get those wall decals made? (for the Audi, SQ5 etc.)

If I leave my car on the driveway for an entire day, it gets dusty but dust doesn't seem to be an issue in my garage. I've gone all winter without dusting in the garage and things still look pretty sharp. Now that Spring is here (knock on wood), I will keep the place cleaner than an operating room!

If you are working with wood, I have nothing but respect if you can keep things clean, because it was a nightmare for me!

Those are cool logos. If you shop around Calgary, it won't be cheap. I'd go online and see who you can find that would be able to do it for a reasonable amount. The GM and Pontiac should be easy to find online, but I like the Tige and 30th Anniversary Trans-Am ones. That 16' x 9' mural idea is very cool. That would be something to behold!

Did you paint that or treat it in anyway to prevent water salt and grease stains or does it actually look nasty underneath and the free flow actually covers that up. I am on the fence myself between free flow and diamond.

Thanks. I apply a coat of sealer every Spring to the concrete pad. It is in pretty good condition because of it. If you battle water, I would go with Free Flow. If you go to my blog and search "floor", you can see some of what goes into the maintenance of a Free Flow floor. Definitely looks a lot easier then what I was imagining even an hour ago before seeing your blog post. Think I'm going to go with the race deck free flow when that time comes.
