I installed R heating in my basement 24 years ago. Two zones, each 16' x 24', heated by a 40 gal electric HWT. It has been trouble free, but no doubt a bit more costly to operate. I have been reading the previous comments regarding humidity or dampness. One of the 2 zones is my wood working shop which is as dry as a popcorn fart. I do not have any worries about fires as I would with other types of heating. The room is completely insulated and sealed. There are no heating system fans or base board heaters. I have also read about trying to reheat the room if a door or window is open. Often I will open a window at one end of my shop and open another at the opposite end which has a two speed fan. I use this for fine dust removal. (I use a cyclonic dust collector for the heavy stuff) I can run this fan for quite awhile. Yes, the room will cool down, but as soon as I shut off the fan, within minutes I am warm again.
I will be building a garage in the spring and will definitely be heating by means of radiant floor heating. I just found a heating unit, an air to water heat pump, built in New Brunswick, Canada which I hope to use for both my basement and new garage.
