Well I have been watching the parts drawers like a hawk in my area at 3 stores. They are all marked 175 but I went into one tonight that was almost completely wiped out and they wee still 175 but I asked the girl if they would make a deal. I offered 500 for all 8 and she went and texted someone then came back at 700. I ended up paying for 4 of them for 350. 87.50 each which is a little more than I hoped to pay but just got paid on a pretty good job and wanted them pretty bad. I feel pretty good that I have some locked down and on the last day which is next Friday I can score 4 more at a better price I will. Anyway just figured I would post my results for you guys on the hunt

Went to visit one of the stores today and they are selling 14 drawers for $175. She said the manager can make deals and may take $300 for 4 sections but that was a guess. I'm debating on buying 2 sections at $175 or offering $250 for 4 sections.

UPDATE: After debating on what I wanted to do, I called the other local store and they sold all of their cabinets yesterday. Not wanting to miss out on these, I went back to the first store and told them I'd take 14 drawers for $175. They said I could not take them home until the manager was there and that I would be dumb to not at least try to work a deal with the manager. The manager gets a commission on them so I will be offering $200 for 4 sections so that I can get the rolling base with them. I will know more tomorrow on my hunt.

Just bought three 7 drawer units for $20 each! A friend got the stores fourth for that price.
It was the last hour of their last day and nobody had grabbed any yet.

Can some post pics or give a few more details on these "$175" cabinets? What are they or why are they desired?

This is what they look like:

The picture shows eight units, with seven drawers per unit.

I started filling mine up a bit yesterday. One will be for abrasive wheels, and boxes of hardware. The other I will be using for CNC tooling storage.

First drawer is filled with Roloc wheels.

Next one with 4.5" flap discs, cutoff discs, and grinding discs.

I have another with all of my kreg jig hardware, and one with boxes of nails, and drywall screws.

On my second box, so far I have only put my softjaws into the bottom drawer, along with my coaxial indicator box.

Mike c. That drawer with the grinder wheels looks like they were made for it. Very cool

Oh SNAP! My grinder wheels are moving TONIGHT!

Here are two of the three I got. The row dividers are movable in the plastic trays, though the columns are fixed. So the fact that these fit 4 1/2" wheels is a huge piece of luck.

The drawers are a steel frame on ball bearings, and you could always remove the plastic trays, though then you'd need to fabricate a drawer bottom, as they are open otherwise (just framed so you could put a piece of plywood in there).

At the $20 I paid for each, I grabbed all I could (though with the weight of the plastic trays inside making it difficult to move in the ice/snow), but I couldn't have fit more in the station wagon anyway.

I do already have a lot of drawer storage though, so I'm not sure I'd buy lots more at that price (maybe another one or two), and I wouldn't pay more except to try to resell them.

They lease all of their stores in this area.

Landlords have to be very careful about store inventory and fixtures left behind. If Radio Shack goes bankrupt, which is likely, the property will probably be auctioned off by the bankruptcy trustee. If they just close down, and leave the inventory and fixtures, and there is no lien on the property, then the landlord may consider it abandoned after a certain period of time which varies by state.

Years ago I had a liquor store close down when the owner got into some trouble. After 60 days we decided that the inventory had been abandoned and helped ourselves.:rocker: Unfortunately a couple of weeks later someone showed up with a lien on the inventory which resulted in our lawyers arguing which is never a good deal.

Now I feel like I was ripped off today after reading about someone above getting them for $20 each!

However, I called the manager this morning at the store which closes Wednesday. I told him I was in yesterday to buy 2 sections (14 drawers total) for $175 (I needed these and was willing to spend up to $200 on whatever I could get). I asked him what he would need to get 2 more sections and the rolling base. He said $200 total and it was mine. I went in and picked them up after work.

If I did not need them I would have risked waiting until the very end to see how low I could get them for but I did not want to miss them altogether. I may check back again on Wednesday to see about the other 4 maybe as a gift for my Dad. I would have never known about any of this and grabbed this score if it were not for this place! I love this message board!

Sorry. ;) Ok, not very. Anyway, don't feel bad. These are pretty nicely made units. I kind of wish the "meridians" were adjustable, but oh well. I may end up removing one or two trays and just putting in a solid bottom for bigger things. Or not.

The story goes: I got a call from a friend who knew I'd want them. She bought one to keep LEGO bricks in, and was sold the remaining contents as well for real cheap (I still need to look over that haul). Since she didn't have room in her car or at home for more she called me, and the store stayed open late, waiting for me.
I rushed there as fast as I could, which was literally 15 minutes after closing time on their last day, and loaded up the three remaining cases.

I guess my reputation among friends for getting these sorts of deals pays off, and sometimes it is just because of that, that stuff like this falls into my lap.

They were also selling the steel shelves off the walls for $2 each (apparently they were down to $5 each earlier in the day, and $10 the day before), but the ears looked too thick to fit in standard shelf rail, and they wouldn't sell any of the rails, as they were screwed to the walls, so I had to pass.

On that note, does anybody know of a single row slotted adjustable shelf rail where the slots are around 4mm wide (normal heavy duty was closer to 3mm by the scale on my leatherman, and I'm not spending a week with a file to make the shelves work)? Maybe I can pick some up at the next closing... The shelves do look quite good, but they're not useful if I can't hang them.

Our store told me that they were trying to sell everything that was not attached to the wall. I think I may check back tomorrow when I get off of work just to see what they would be willing to do on anything else I may be able to use that they have not had any luck with.

I got 3 for $215. $75 each seems to be the very least they're supposed to do at this point. None left in the Princeton Plaza store in San Jose.

I offered them $50 for all 4 of our double stacked units haha. The girl at the register said that she was pretty sure they wouldn't accept that. I was like hey it's worth a try right. They were doing a bag sale today $20 for all you can fit in a 10 gallon garbage bag.

My store is now at 95% off.

I basically cleaned out whatever capacitors they had left. Some packs of Automotive blade fuses, Got a tube of Arctic Silver Thermal Compound, and a Soldering Tip.

Walked out with a pretty hefty bagful of stuff. Paid $3.02.

I might have to go back and just clean out all the drawers, everything in them is about 7 cents a bag now.

The drawers themselves still say $175 per section. I asked when those were going to drop in price. The guy said "Never, those are non-negotiable, they are $175 each." But the store closes this week.

They also has some nice ladders and hand trucks, but still want to much money for them. Might have to go back closer to the end of the week, and see if the price drops.

My store was closed today because of the weather. I picked up $80 worth of stuff yesterday though. The bag felt to be over 20 pounds. Today was my only chance to pick up the drawers before I leave town so it looks like I missed out because closed today.

I talked to the manager at my local store, Marion, IN, last week and they said their last day was the 26th. I luckily drove by there today to see what was left and they had changed their closing day to today. The store was cleaned out except for fixtures. I got lucky and the guy from their liquidation contractor was there so I got to negotiate directly with him. After about an hour of haggling, I got all 8 drawer sections, the heavy carts they were attached to, 2 sections of the stock room shelving, some random capacitors and resistors left on the drawers, and a feather duster for 180. I feel I did pretty well. It took 2 trips in the xterra, with a lot of ratchet straps to get them home. Thank you garage journal for telling me about an irresistible deal that I didn't need to begin with yet again! This place is expensive!

as a point of reference i paid 300 for my 8 sets...he originally wanted 350. the manager was a bit of a mental midget for further negotiation would have been futile and only frustrating... i got a gret price on the contents also but her has to scan every friggin item... took him an hour to ring it all up while the other guy and i took the cabinets apart and i lugged them to my car

I want at least one of these drawers bad but my local store shows no sign of selling out. Went in the other day to see if they were clearancing and the manager was on the phone ordering more stuff?

I'm going over to another store that is 90-95% off. I'm going to clean out whatever capacitors and soldering supplies they might have for that price.

I'll see if they have drawers. My stores aren't budging on the $175 price, and they close the doors this week. Going to keep checking, but the top price I'd go would be $50 bucks a section. The other store I was at the sections were all dented up and missing many of the sections that go inside the drawers, and they still wanted $175.

I was able to cherry pick my two cabinets and made sure the drawers were all in good shape and I may have snagged some dividers out of the other sections to make sure I had extras...

Is there a proper way to store these components and soldering supplies that might not get used for years and years and years? ie some silica gel and cool temps or does it really not matter?

I'm especially thinking caps, solder, stuff that can age and become useless. if I do get over to the one near me closing. way out of the way but if i'm going in that direction I will stop.

I picked up led lights and switches. I didn't get any caps. I only use high quality Japanese caps on my vintage stereo rebuilds so I didn't bother with them. But I like fresh caps, not sure how long they stay good before drying out?

Don't worry. I have rolls of rosin core solder over 50 years old, and they look just fine.

None of the components RS sold in those drawers need special storage other than non-condensing humidity levels.

I picked up 2 sets of the drawers for $80 last night. It was the only two they had left at the last store to close here. Someone from out of state came day before yesterday and bought every piece of merchandise left in the store for 90% off. I was hoping to get some more electronics stuff, but it was all gone.

I went by two stores. Today was closing day for both.

They had huge bags that you could fill, the entire bag for $10. I filled it with TONS of batteries, Alkaline, Button Cell, and Rechargeable. Also bought TONS of power supply adapters. And some leftovers from the parts bins. A bunch of A/V accessories. And some leftover soldering stuff.

They had to ring everything up (I guess for Inventory purposes), then charged 10 bucks for the bag. The bag rang up something like over $2,000 retail. All for 10 bucks. Some decent stuff. No drawers left at this store, they said they sold them for $50 each section to somebody earlier today.

Then went over to the other store, it had absolutely nothing. I wish I went there first, because a guy in the line had an entire bag full of stuff from the parts bins. He looks like he basically emptied all 8 sections into a big bag for 10 bucks. He had a total of 5 bags for 50 bucks. He basically emptied 100% of whatever was left in the store, and filled 5 giant bags.

The store still has all 8 sections of drawers. I asked "how much", they said they are 50% off of the $175 posted. Which would be $87.50 each. I asked how low could they go, and they said that's it. I asked when does the store close for good, they said "today". I asked how low would they get by the end of the day, they said $87.50. I'm going to go by later today to see if they price drop. At this point, there is basically nothing in the store except the front glass counter and the 8 drawer sections. Not sure why they are still holding out.

Went to the one closest to work today their manager let me fill a garbage bag of stuff for 10 bucks. Retail on the stuff was close to a grand. Each item was scanned and then the total was reduced to 10.

There are a few around here they should have closed down 10-15 years ago. Ditto on some of the ones that were in the district I worked in when I worked for RS in the late 90s. I actually remember the district manager wanting to close them because they were just barely breaking even, and had inventory problems left and right. Corporate just wouldn't budge on them because the chain as a whole was making money hand over fist at the time.

Here is my $10 Grab Bag. They had to ring everything up, and the receipt is 10 feet long. Retail was $2,343.53 which was then marked down to $10.

I went to a total of three stores. Got a $10 Grab Bag at one, the second store was open but completely empty except store fixtures, the third was actually locked up with a sign on the front door saying "No more merchandise".

I wasn't able to score any of the 7 drawer parts bins at reasonable prices, all the stores held their ground at prices higher than I wanted to spend.
