I am planning my future garage build. I see that many people build an upstairs room by using special rafters/trusses. How much distance is needed between the roof of the garage and the ceiling of the room for the trusses/rafters? Trying to figure out how much head room I can have in an upstairs room.

Depends on the span and loads and construction of the ceiling joists or bottom chord of the trusses.

You can use Structured Insulate Panels (SIPs) for you roof and NO rafters are required.
Yes, it requires proper engineering. Yes, it will probably cost more, but you will have a strong, insulated ceiling in your "bonus room".

With a span of 40' you will need to look at trusses unless you want supporting columns or walls in the shop portion, which I'm assuming you don't. There are special trusses which allow for an upstairs room. The ceiling height of the upstairs room will depend on the pitch (slope) of the roof. Go to a truss company or your local home improvement store and they can show what is available.

Yes, you will have to determine the loader sq.ft. you will have or want in the room above the garage, the hight and width of the room you desire. Th higher and wider will affect the pitch. You can discuss this with the person at the truss company, lumber yard, or home center and they will tell you what you can do. Good luck!

Take your dimensions and go talk to a local truss manufacturer. You'll get better answer(s) from them than from strangers on the internet.
