Not according to my engineer.
Do you have a link to a source confirming this?

You don't want to trust what you might read in an internet "link" or a picture that you see in a book without knowing the full theoretical basis and having the numerical justification.

I have seen many houses with the walls pushed out in a lifetime practice.

The best advice is hire a local "Structural" Engineer, have him do a little drawing for you, apply his state issued "seal", and off you go. You, and the future owners of the property, are protected from physical harm and liability exposure.

Be aware that Engineers are like Doctors; they are all specialized.

Thanks for all the great ideas.

So far it look like the best way would be to create a ridge beam over the lift bay and support each end using bar joists.

See this link for photos: http://www.sammemmolo.com/sams_garage_2.htm

That is an interesting but complicated design. It looks like a ridge beam within a ridge board roof? I wonder why he didn't just build a typical ridge beam roof. Perhaps he had a ridge board design with rafters and wanted to removed the rafters. I didn't look at every pic so perhaps it shows this.

it was a trussed roof to begin with, so he either bought the house and wanted more ceiling space or built without thinking of ceiling space for a lift and wanted to change it. i dont know how well his solution will work but im no engineer so who knows
