I agree. Bilstein makes 10x the shock.

Yup.

Rancho is just a sticker...they are the exact same as 10 other brands out there that all come off the exact same production line (saw a show on it once)

Rancho is just marketing like Optima - people flock to a name.

The Monroe Shocktober thing has been going on for all of Sept and Oct; O'Reilly was sending me emails about it a month ago and it comes up automatically as "rebate available" on RockAuto and Amazon.

I bought 2 shocks and 2 struts for my dad for his birthday. The best part? The rear shocks were $9 ea on Rock so I'll get a $9 rebate. Woohoo. Oh, these are the shocks he wanted as "his mechanic" specifically told him to get them. Ok.

The shocks I replaced were Ranchos. They were 12 years old and still doing the job. The new shocks I bought are Rancho 9000's, which are Made in USA. I suspect I will get the same longevity from this set.

I have some of the 9000's on a rig that's close to 4 tons running 35's and have been happy with them for the last 4 years.

All said and done with AA discounts I have less than $70/corner in them.

For someone to make a blanket statement that they **** without listing a specific shock and the conditions on which it ran and failed seems a tad short sighted to me.

I went to go put a set of 9000's on a friend's F-150 and they were both bad out of the box. They really are no better than any other "white body" shock on the market. I wouldn't pay extra for them over OEM, that's for sure. They are generically valved so you buy them by their length, whereas the Bilstein's valving is actually more tailored to the vehicle and can be had for about $85ea (last time I bought them 3 years ago).

Funny since people are always telling others to use the search function maybe using the search function of Google would help identify that Rancho is garbage.

Spend the extra money and get some Bilsteins, at a minimum.

Welding slag, horrible paint job,s dents and dings in tubing, rust out of the box, riding like a tank on the road weak attachment kits I mean what more do you need?

I guess Blue Hawk tools are equivalent to Snap On by the same logic being displayed here....

The 9000's are ride adjustable, whether it is accomplished in the valving I cannot comment on. I like having the ability to firm up the shock when I'm carrying a truck camper and towing a trailer.

I don't need to get all my info from the interweb. I've have my own experience with Rancho.

I have no problem with that. Honestly I guess I should just keep my mouth shut and let people have their "deal". Either way the evidence from everyone in here is anecdotal...

You have yet to provide where you get your opinion from in regard to Rancho shocks. Can we assume Google? :dunno:

i think 98% of the "rancho *****" are based on the 5000 series... which really are no better than any other generic basic level shock

when you bump up to the 9000 then you're getting somewhere... but bilstein is still better

Sorry to jack the thread but... Anyone recommend quick struts option for your typical sedan? I was looking at Monroes economy line because I won't have the car too long, but I don't know of any other brands.

I agree w all this. The 5k's ride like bricks and the adjustability of the 9k's is just a gimmick to make Joe Consumer feel like a motorsports big boy, similar to Snap-On branded stuff at Ace Hardware. "Look Cletus, a fancy knob w dem number thingies!"

The kicker is that a good shock shouldn't have to be adjustable, EXCEPT for SERIOUS motorsports, at which point Rancho is way, way out of its league.

I ran Bilstein 5100's on my Bronco and have them on all 4 corners of my '08 F350 right now. 99% of people never climb under the truck to adjust their fancy adjustable Ranchos anyhow, and if you wanna see the only thing more failure-prone than ARB air lines just wait 'till you get on a trail ride w the guy that has the fancy in-cab adjustable Rancho console -- hilarious!

The 5100's are Bilstein's answer to a "consumer grade" shock that is still quality (albeit bare-bones in the world of real suspension). Ranchos are a Chen-Shin shock masquerading as quality. But run what makes you happy!

Yup. I'm scanning through this thinking "good dampers are thousands per set, not hundreds." I paid more for dampers for my first race car than I did for the whole flippin' car!!!!

I just looked at some plain jane ranchos and they did say "made in the usa" .......that has nothing to do with their ride quality but it was nice to see. I have bilsteins on an e30 and really like them on that.

For grins I went on 4wheelparts.com and priced out 4 shocks for a 2000 F350 4x4:

Bilstein 5100 - $280
Rancho 5000 - $203
Rancho 9000 - $443

No way I in hell I would pay $443 for a set of Rancho shocks.

the basic blue monroes are just fine for a typical sedan

and as a bonus if "won't have the car long" involves trying to sell it yourself even cheap shocks can be a selling point if new

Only complaint I have on the Bilstein 5100s is the finish. The brushed galvanized, or whatever it is doesn't stand up to road salt and our Maine winters.

Nah, there's a difference between consumer feedback & blind brand loyalty. I tend to be a Ford guy but like GM and would own a Dodge if the right deal came along. They ALL do dumb ****. I drive a V10 right now and don't mind it but I'll be the first to tell you it's "impressively unimpressive" as I've said here before. And I do think the modular motors have some major design flaws. GM's far from perfect too, just in other ways (wife has '05).

Guys who just blindly hate Ford or GM, etc I avoid. But those who can articulate their concerns I listen to.

If there were no validity in consumer feedback we can just delete this board right now. No need to discuss a Neiko vs Tekton or GW vs SK. Ditto for eBay feedback and Amazon reviews.

The cheapest shock in general should be okay then. There are tons of generic shocks/struts all over ebay for cheap that should be ok until you get rid of the car and then become someone else's problem.
