Ratchet with built-in spinner wheel

Every now and then, I search for something that I think will be easy to find and am flummoxed when I find it hard (or impossible) to find. I seem to have lost my Craftsman 1/2 inch ratchet wrench with built-in thumb spinner wheel such as the Powerbuilt wrench in this photo. I don't have any experience with Powerbuilt tools and looking up threads on their quality, I've found a mixed bag of results. I have always had good service from my Craftsman tools and the occasional Snap-On (which are very nice but expensive). Yet, Craftsman's web site does not show any ratchets with spinners built in (nor does Snap-On). There are some old Craftsman wrenches available from ebay, but before I pull the trigger on one of those, I just thought I'd ask the group if there is a new, high quality 1/2 inch ratchet wrench with this obviously very useful feature.

Thanks!

I grew up my first socket sets were Craftsman and had those Tri-Wing ratchets in them and they were what I became accustomed to using. I loved the thumbwheel on the back and used it all the time and it was hard for me to get very used to using any other kind of ratchet.

That said, they were/are pretty well hated on here at GJ and elsewhere because they were made for Craftsman by Stanley in Taiwan at a time when almost everything Craftsman was still 'made in USA'. IIRC there were claims that some of them were even incorrectly stamped USA though none I've ever seen have had that. I still like the design, except AFAIK there never were rebuild kits made available for them like there were for almost every other craftsman ratchet.

Anywho, I still have a handful of them hanging around my toolboxes. They still are WAAAAAY better ratchets than those Craftsman industrial tri-wings (w/o the thumbwheel) hiding in the back of the drawer there. Those are easily the worst ratchets I ever used of any brand. Pure Junk IMHO.

Craftsman Tri-Wings.jpg

MUCH more popular (and pretty sought after, sometimes fetching ridiculous prices on ebay and such) are the Craftsman RHFTs that also had a thumbwheel but on the drive side where it was much less useful. What makes them great ratchets is they were very dependable with very little backdrag (when properly lubed) and had an asynchronous double pawl design that effectively doubled the # of clicks, or range of travel between the # of teeth, so the 1/2"dr had 45 teeth = 90 clicks, so ~4° of travel between teeth engagement, the 3/8"dr had 41 teeth = 82 clicks / ~4.4° arc swing, and the 1/4"dr had 35 teeth = 70 clicks / ~5.1° of arc swing, which for a ratchet that they were making as far back as 1970 still rivals that of some of the best ratchets made today.

I still have a bunch of those too. Most all of these were handed down to me from my grandfather, with the exception of the 1/4" & 1/2" dr RHFT digitorque wrenches. I paid too much for those just to have them added to this collection I already had.

Craftsman wasn't the only ones using this design back then, some others I believe were SK and Easco, but they didn't have a quick-release IIRC, and they don't seem to have as many people wanting to pay crazy prices for them, so those can probably be found for a lot cheaper these days,

$20 bucks shipped for a Challenger.
I think I have a 3/8" drive version...

I do. I found it:

Challenger 1260 3.8 dr RHFT ratchet 092923.jpg
Challenger 1260 3/8" drive RHFT ratchet

Feels like about 40-45 teeth (?) Not super-fine, but at least as fine as that Craftsman. I would imagine the 1/2" drive version would be in the same ballpark. Feels pretty good, although it's brand new and bone dry - a few drops of oil would smooth it out a bit.

YMMV

I remember you used to get a spinner adapter to go onto your Ratchet from socket tool & ratchet sets. I recently found one.

The problem with those is it's on the wrong side, just like with a RHFT, but those old Stanley-made-in-Taiwan Craftsman Tri-wings had the thumbwheel spinner on the back of the ratchet where it was actually really useful to run a fastener up/down the threads fast, way easier than doing the same on the socket or extension itself, and could easily be done one-handed which in close-quarters is often all you can keep on a ratchet. Once used to it it's kinda hard to adapt and even learn to like a ratchet that doesn't have that spinner on the back/selector-side of the ratchet, even though it was an old chunky toothed thing.

When I made my "project" ratchet the gear assembly had the spinner on the back. Just worked out that way, but it's kinda nice.

A lot of the TOP Kogyo round head ratchets have integrated spinners at the bottom by the square drive, the reverse switch is the ring at the top. (RH-4, RH-4S, RH-4SF, SR-4 in 1/2")

The Heyco Vericat is a pear head lever-switch design and has a spinner knob on top, but it's a plastic and a bit chunkier.

Edit: If you like old Craftsman, the raised panel handle on the TOP RH-4 will probably be your cup of tea.

I have one of these too, it's 40 teeth but its a twin pawl so its an 80 position ratchet. I imagine the 1/2 drive is also twin pawl but Idk if the tooth count is different but worth looking for used. I picked mine up for $5 at a swap meet.

I have a few Powerbuilt tools and I've been very happy with them. I have a breaker bar, extensions and some larger sockets from years ago and 72 tooth ratchet last year. I just work on my stuff at home and don't abuse my tools and they seem perfectly fine. I would be fine with buying a Powerbuilt ratchet based on my past experience with them.
There are plenty of options for used/older ratchet as mentioned above, in addition Husky (part 24202) had one as well.

NAPA has an option and it appears to be available in store, at least in my area, so you can check it out before you buy.

I have an old 3/8 Husky ratchet with a thumb wheel. It's a CB-46, rebranded New Britain. The thumb wheel is just a thin plate added on but the anvil has a machined groove for a snap ring to retain the plate.

Edit: CS-46 seems to be the 1/2" version.

They are kinda hard to find, but the Pro-Auto "smart head" MHR ratchets are a real sleeper. They have a thumb wheel, and are a compact head 3/8" drive in a 1/4" size. (I want to get the 1/2" drive as well). The back-drag is super light......maybe not Koken light but very close, and fine tooth as well. Since small packet shipping from Japan just got cheaper, they might be an affordable option.

Just a quick update on the NAPA Evercraft- I went by a NAPA today to check out a few things and I put my hands on the Evercraft and I'm sure this is a dual pawl ratchet. I counted about 20-21 clicks in a quarter turn so its about an 80 position or better ratchet but its not mentioned anywhere. Also, its made in Taiwan and doesn't look too bad for an $18 ratchet. I may have to get one of these for my road tool bag. I think this is the one to get over the Powerbuilt.

I went and bought 3/8 Evercraft from NAPA and opened it up to confirm it is indeed a dual pawl ratchet. Here it is compared to the Proto Challenger, it is just a little bit longer. For just $11.99 for the 3/8 and $17.49 for the 1/2, and easy walk up warranty service at any NAPA, this is the one to get over the Powerbuilt.

I recently found one too. I threw it into the scrap metal bin. I don't think, in my entire career of working with tools, I have ever used one.

In addition to the Proto Challenger ratchet a couple people mentioned here Proto also made a similar USA made thumbwheel ratchet branded Proto Professional. I can confirm that the selector works as a spinner wheel. I’ve had two different ones. Fine tooth likely using a dual pawl setup. Haven’t tried a Challenger to compare so it may be the same mechanism with a different selector switch, not sure. Both of mine have been 1/2” drive with I believe 84 teeth though otherwise not really up to modern performance standards. Here’s a photo of one from eBay for reference.

hmmm don't think that's the same as the Challenger ... not sure... :dunno:

(* also HERE)

.... another model with a built-in thumbwheel is the Thorsen 89 (1/2" drive) or 89J (3/8" drive) quick-release.

The 3/8" drive models are not uncommon. I don't think I've ever seen a 1/2" drive model.
