I often use 6 or 7 at a time.If I'm doing engine work or something similar I'll put a different socket on each ratchet,save alot of time switching things around.Time is money.

It is easy to have at least 10 and use them frequently.

For example 3/8

Adds up to 11 to use styles that make it easier to get places and additional ones to not have to stop and change sockets. That does not include breaker bars, sliding bars, speeders, etc.

From left to right:

1) Duro # 2888 (Found 2 of these in one week. Way cool vintage 1/4" female drive ratchet with it's original male drive plug.)
2) Husky H5126 (Vintage 1/4" female drive ratchet with it's original male drive plug. Surprised to find this one.)
3) Bonney # V-702K (( V702K ) Good quality ratchet, too bad they are out of business, looking for more Bonney 1/4" drives)
4) Bonney # RF45 (Refrigeration ratchet, reversible, put a 1/4" male drive "plug" in it, and you have a typical ratchet, put it in the opposite end, and you have a breaker bar. Think that is a 1/2" socket built into the handle end.)
5) Imperial Brass # 123C (Refrigeration ratchet, flip over to reverse direction.)
6) Walden # 3119 (Refrigeration ratchet, flip over to reverse direction.)
7) Proto Challenger # 1060-1 (Quality example.)

There is a date code between the OF and OFF letters.

Its from 1939-around 1947.

Value on ebay, is probably in the $10-15 range in its condition.

i recovered this from an old lumber yard that was being torn down about 15 years ago. it's about 2 feet long and apears to be one inch drive. it's froze up. i never could get it broke loose. what the heck is it??

DynoDale, all I can say is.... wow! That one drawer by itself, is awe inspiring and somewhat mind blowing! That is a collection to aspire to! It looks like you have just about one of every ratchet that Snapon makes! You must have a good relationship with your Snap-On dealer! Nice tools!

I don't know what it's for but I like it!! You should try and soak the head in something to break it loose. Maybe you have already.

soak it in diesel for a week - always worked for me.

Try soaking it in a 50/50 mix of ATF/acetone for about 12 hours. Works wonders.

Just scored this Indestro Super 1/2" drive today from a pawn shop in Boise. Didn't work (spun freely when direction was switched), so I brought it home, disassembled it, cleaned, lubed and reassembled. Works like a champ. I bought it for $4!

I just love it when I get "broken" ratchets for cheap and bring them back to life.

My guess is that this is a binder ratchet for binding loads together with a metal strap. There would have been another part that went with it that the straps went in. Whether that is what it is or not it is a very cool find.

If you ever held a gray ratchet you'd realize the hollow handle was to keep weight down,these ratchets are BUILT.Think of cornwell as a wimpy cousin!

That's why they call it "ratchet ****". You just pick which ratchet is prettiest to you that particular day

We need a photo, Jack, but assuming you're under 65+ it's almost certainly older than you!

Something called "Open End Ratchet Wrenches".........????

Haven't seen them in any tool catalogs.

Good luck finding a set today. Those were sold in the 40's or 50's and the only reference I have ever seen to them was an old ad in a vintage Popular mechanics magazine from the day. the TAC stood for something like Tube Appliance Corporation, or something strange like that.

Proto acquired T.A.C. (Tubing Appliance Corporation) somewhere in between the 1954 catalogue (C5428) and the 1956 catalogue (5629). Look beginning at p. 28 in the 1956 catalogue for listings.
