Ratcheting Reversible?

K, well I am in search of a ratcheting reversible combination wrench set. I would be fine buying any brand of any origin as long as they are warrantied and worthwhile.

I would go purchase the gearwrench but refuse to have a wrench with the capstop feature, as the times I have used a friend's blue point set I used it from both sides, so I need the variable usage.

I found Titan brand at northern for 69.99 in a twelve piece set, but not sure if it's worth while.. I don't know where else to look, I do like the bluepoint set, but don't wanna pay american made prices for a non usa tool

I have the old C-man reversible ratcheting wrenches when they first came out. I have been very happy with them. I don't know if the current ones are USA or not.

So apparently not all of the gearwrenches have the capstop..

Does anyone know if this set does? I like using the coupons as these could be realllllly cheap if they don't have that stupid capstop

I would say it's a non capstop set since the set part number shows up in the gearwrench catalog (capstop sets aren't listed in the Gearwrench catalog).
Although you can't trust pictures, since the 12 points are visible from the top of the wrench, there's no capstop. On a capstop wrench, the thin flat washer obscures the points of the boxed end when viewed from the top.

One of my many explanations (or rants if you like) in post #8 here about GW reversible:
http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=84679

I have nothing against GW as a company. They were happy to warranty them all day long......but a defective tool for another defective tool doesn't help me much. They were even willing to try to refund my money, told me to go to my local Napa and have the mgr call a lady at an 800# while I was there. I knew my local Napa manager would fight that tooth and nail, so I threw the GW's in my work truck as spares; it was no longer worth my time.

I didn't have the cap stop feature and have never used it.

The Craftsmans are on sale for $90. The ones I've seen have all been made in the USA. (The non-reversible ones have definitely been offshored.) If you order online using the link from offers.com, you can save another $10, so it's only a $10 premium. Is a domestic made product worth $10 more?

I can't speak about other sets (not having used them,) but I know that I've been very pleased with my set.

Problem with the Craftsman sets is the exclusion of a 19 and 16mm. They do include a mostly useless 8mm though :).

Not sure what craftsman has against 16mm ratcheting wrenches.

I use a 3/4 instead of the 19 and the 8mm is used for side post batterys.

I agree that it should have a 16. I bought that from open stock when they had the $5 coupon fiasco.

I personally LOVE the capstop feature.

I have two sets of gearwrench one with and one without and only once have I ever used the non-capstop upside down. That was a particularly poorly designed turbo manifold. My design, my fault.

I just got the metric and sae sets from advanced and they do not have the cap stop feature. You can get both sets for $88 if you use the BIG40 coupon code.

Yep, use the 8mm on our Silverado side post batt.

That said, the difference between 8mm and 5/16 is all of 2.5 thousandths..... much closer than 13mm and 1/2..............and I bet we all interchange those.

I just picked up the GM Goodwrench 8pc sets from O'rilley's for $49.99 each and IMO they are really nice. Their a tad longer then my gearwrench brand wrenches, and don't have the capstop.
Another thing I noticed was when I googled the warranty address for them it came up as the same address for the Proto/blackhawk warranty returns. They look identical to the blackhawk ratcheting wrenches. I would assume they are most likely the same wrench with a different name. (BTW: they are Taiwan) O'rilley autoparts warranty's them and stocks all sizes.

The only thing I don't like about them is the cost of the single wrenches. I want to complete the sets but they are very pricey. They range from $15.99 to $54.99 EACH. But most are between $19.99 and $23.99, and they do come in many sizes (7mm to 25mm and 1/4" to 1-1/4")

Ah, too true. I've since filled the holes with open stock, and had forgotten all about that. mea culpa.

I would go to Sears and compare the Craftsman to the Gearwrench. I may be crazy but the Gearwrench seems smoother and seems to need less of a swing arc to catch.

Don't mean to stir unrest. I actually found the capstop very handy, eg. when you loosen a nut from a long bolt, the wrench will "travel" with the nut, and you'd never miss the nut; also when putting up a nut from bottom, the capstop is premium to prevent the nut from falling off. OK, I can see when the capstop could become a problem, but most of the shortfall can be overcome with the open end of the wrench, I just don't see why so many dislike it...:headscrat
