mmmmm... lets see, one shiny Wright 3/8", a couple Snap-on F936(one we'll be going out soon), a few Facom round head 72-tooth 1/4", a 1/4" Bost made by Facom, an Autobest 1/4", a Hazet 916SP, an old Stahlwille 415, some Ko-ken in 3/8" and one halfie too, couple ol' Beta 1/2", a Dowidat 3/4", a few 1/4" taiwanese no-name and a sturdy albeit cheapie Powerfix 1/2" to lend outside, two or three Gedore, a Russian-made 14mm-square pass-thru, a SAM halfie, an old cadmium plated Lauravia 1/4", three Top, one in each size, an ETC 1/4"(one of my oldest), a recent Saltus 1/4" and probably more scattered around the houses and a few other places.

latest is a cheap rusty Duro-Chrome halfie pass-thru that will eventualy replace the russian 14mm since it's not usable with the special socket i wanted to use it for.

that's way more than i thought i had...

luckily i use them all even if a few are always sporting the same socket for the exact same job each time, minus the small Lauravia due to its cadmium plating and origin and the SAM since its chrome is severely peeling and i plan to refinish it later...

great stuff but you do have a limited choice of sockets and ratchet handle is not long enough, they could have done a longer longish version, like the long 1/2" Snap-on ones, that would have been greater than the two models they sell.

now i've only the 10mm socket left and it's stuck there since the ejector is broken... only use it to break loose all those pesky rusted 10mm-headed bolts with a cheater tube, at least until i get a cheap kit for it.


get one if you cannot use a 1/2" rat and need to apply mucho mucho torque and don't mind being the only one in the 'hood with a CDX drive rat!

Thanks! I know the application is somewhat limited. I'm a bit of an oversized genetic freak, and I worry (probably needlessly) about breaking stuff.

don't worry, the guy that broke the ratchet ejector is the kind of guy for whom all tools are hammers/impact tools of some sort. even digital calipers or drills.

if the ratcheting mechanism withstanded his abusive behaviour, i'm pretty sure that you won't have any concern with those CDX rats and sockets(one of the good thing of the low popularity of those is that production is still France for the sockets and France or Italy for the rats).

sadly the only places i've seen CDX stuff used are mostly industrial maintenance, local subway elevators crew(along with Gedore and Wera stainless stuff), a few tool freaks/mechanics(pretty rare over here), a "big hull" composite shipbuilder's integration department and in a local submarine factory(civilian subs) a few years ago. that's it.

I believe I have 4. The standard 3 (1/4", 3/8", & 1/2") Craftsman USA raised panel teardrops, and possibly a round head 3/8" SK that's lurking in a small green hammerite looking metal box somewhere or other. I'll keep an eye out for it, and if I find it I'll attempt to positively identify it. I'm going to be adding a set of 4 Armstrongs to my arsenal, and that should about do it for me.

Hmph. Think I'm full of it, huh?

Been planning a full blown post with decent pics, stats, etc for a little while (since closing in on 500), but I don't like being called a BS'r, so here's a teaser or few of ultra-crappy cellphone pics:

That's 3 drawers out of 7 filled in that cabinet. Can fit roughly 100 3/8", 50 1/2" or probably 175+ 1/4" in each drawer (only have @ 90 1/4"), and doesn't include the 40+ in the roll cab. Planning on putting the 1/2" alphabetical as well. I'm gonna have to spread out into the remaining drawers, 'cause it's a pain adding a ratchet into the middle of mostly full drawer alphabetically and shifting a s**tload of ratchets around...

And all those ratchets that look the same aren't - they're different brands, or high/low tooth count models, or some other difference - I don't count multiples of absolutely identical ratchets within a drive size.

Attached (hopefully) is a partial pdf print of the spreadsheet I'm keeping track of the model #'s on, to show the long list of brands. It's not the most recent update - it only totals 512 ratchets. A handful listed as individual brands are actually variations/evolutions of a particular brand (like S-K, SK, SK Tools, SK Wayne), but there's a good 100+ unique brands.

So you can't call bull, but what do I get to call you?

What a n00b, I'm at a whopping 2. A kobalt 1/2" and a old craftsman1/2" breaker.

Yet I have 4 sets of MAC and MATCO impact sockets...maybe I should have spent better...

I have about 13 or so. The two that get the most use are my 84T Craftsman Premium ratchets, followed by those Pittsburgh swivel heads (Which I am afraid to admit, but I actually like for the price). I also have some Plomb pebble handles, Williams, Wright, SK, Allen, Husky, Wera, and a Duralast Snap On clone in the ratchet drawer.

The Williams ratchets have a very nice overall feel, I have a BB-52A (black industrial finish) that I use exclusively with my bike tools. I also have a Williams B-52EHFA that I just started getting acquainted with. The SK ratchets are from my grandfather and very special to me, but I don't use them often. (1/2" Drive) The others just act as subs on jobs where I may need to switch between sizes frequently.

I have an unmarked (taiwan, I think) master mechanic roundhead that's remarkably fine, a US NAPA quick release that's remarkably coarse, an SK 45170, and a duralast pear head (coarse, but feels great, very strong, my go-to). All 3/8ths.

I have matching duralast 1/4th and 1/2 pear heads, but they're the exact same design as the 3/8th, and while it works great in 3/8ths, scaling it doesn't QUITE work - the quarter is obnoxiously stiff, and the half will pop into neutral, or switch directions - the design (snap-on or similar copy, I believe) needed some tweaking to scale it up or down, and it doesn't seem to have recieved an adequate dose of said tweaking - I'm going to see if they'll swap the half out for a roundhead, since I can make it slip on command to show them, but I really need more half inch ratchets - and some bigger stuff wouldn't hurt either..

And I need some breakers - I have my favorite pipe (leather handle and all) for lugs, but I've never been able to bring myself to spend as much as an alright ratchet costs, for a freaken.... bar.

Get a long handle ratchet. It will do just fine. I recommend the long handle Wright or Williams models. Very nice price.

The small breaker bar to the bottom right of the black torque stick, is that a Gray Canada tool? If so, can you post the part number? As well as the 1/4 round ratchet to match? They don't list those currently, and I'd like to start looking for them online.

Running about 25, but as I was looking at the drawer I realized there isn't a lot of duplication. Short, long, flex, palm, flex speeder, indexing flex, and some other varieties x 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2.

Almost, and yet, not quite.

I can't say I'm looking for one particular brand. I just don't like passing up on sub-$5.00 old US made iron.

What I use most in my personal box are my Snap-On's (both hh and sh), my Matco 24 incher, a few pristine SK's, and a Challenger QR given to me by Geologist.

Can't say I ever WANTED a particular brand to collect, they just seem to cross my path. I'm not complaining though!
