Lot of people bent out of shape over a riser...

OP, if it makes you feel better I built basement stairs in my house with an 9 1/4" tread, 8" rise and no riser.
You're much less likely to sue the owner than a tenant or someone visiting a tenant. I'm not bent out of shape, but it's a clear building and life safety code violation. Hard to defend against in litigation. Just trying to share information so people aren't misled.

Looks really good. Do you have an access door underneath the stairs? I'd be tempted to seal the stairs for some covered storage underneath. Also, some skateboard grip tape on each step would help ensure no one slips

This is outdoors, there is a door to the power meters, but its basically open to the elements, rain, etc. Trying to make them watertight is an impossible errand.

Everyone is really worked up on the risers, I personally didn't want risers because that would allow the wood to dry faster, in theory.

This is a building with 4 units, in a condo association that does nothing for anyone.

The condo association claims that they are not responsible for the stairs, which is probably BS, but its cheaper to build the stairs myself than to hire an attorney.

I have liability insurance in case someone falls down the stairs.

I also bought some 1x6x12s because you guys are really worked up about the risers, better safe than sorry.

Its not my property, and the door doesn't lock so that would immediately cause the HOA to go nuclear.

Just pointed out it does comply with the laws we call building codes. You probably will never be cited for it and you're not concerned about liability, so go for it.

You don’t need to close off the riser completely. Say your rise is 7-1/2” now (rounded for easy math) less the 1-1/2” tread = a gap of 6”. Add a 2x4 under the nose and the gap is down to 2-1/2” which meets code and still provides ventilation.

And be careful about using the space under the stairs for storage, the fire marshal would probably object.

I agree with others that the top of the stringers need more support. In fact, the middle stringer has no support at the end. What you built may be better than what was there, but you need to build it right. If something happens, you want as few items as possible for people to find fault with.

There does need to be a header across the ends of the stringers at the top tied to the walls with hangers as you did with the intermediate cross bracing.

I already bought the 1x6s to fill in the gaps, I figure that its always better to follow the free advice on GJ than to ignore it. lol

Looks good and it might be overkill but I would put some vertical supports under the 2 by 6’s

So how many stars are we giving the OP? 🤣

Just kidding.

I don't really do IRC and stairs, unless it's the structural provisions of IBC, but from a structural standpoint it looks good to me based on your photos. No need to provide posts at the headers.

Give it 3-4 months to dry out, and add a coat of paint.

Are you going to add additional supports?

Better with them, no question to me.

Ones they dry, get cleaned and stained, they'll look great. I wouldn't paint

Surprised you made the risers fit right. A smaller board like a 1x4 with a gap would have been a nice option.

I liked it open also

That would have taken more than my brain can handle in the mid day sun, lol.

I did leave a 3/4 gap on the bottom riser so its not touching the concrete.

OP posted and ask for input...He got input...

Yup, and I made changes based on the input.

I didn't even think about babies heads.

GJ is pretty great about being helpful without being assholes.

I really appreciate the input, thanks to everyone.

The only other change will be the outdoor paint with the grit for traction that will be applied whenever the HOA gets back to me with the proper color to match. They take forever.

That's a good idea. I figured the skateboard grip tape would be cheaper. I have had some strips on my front steps for several years and no sign of peeling
