Don't sound bad to me. 12" wheel is only 1.5" bigger on each side, so it ain't like the think is mounted on a 4" grinder and you have no where to hold on.

The only time I witnessed something similar was unfortunately with my father. He needed to cut off the bottom of a pocket door because of interference with new flooring. Not wanting to deal with the pocket door removal (who can blame him) he put a skilsaw blade on a grinder, took the guard off and that's when I walked in. Before I could tell him how stupid it was he made an attempt at making the cut. He quickly realized it was way too dangerous and went with another method. I've had a 14" abrasive wheel blow up in my chop saw with the guard and that's more than enough excitement for me. No possible way I'd even think about doing this one.

The sad thing is that it isn't a question of "IF" it will hurt him. The question is when will it hurt him and how bad.

I think we have all done stupid things briefly to get a job done. Sometimes you just assume that risk - i.e. I just to use it for a single ten second job. But it sounds like this guy seems to think it is a good tool to keep using. That disc will destruct sooner or later and, unless real lucky, it will hit him and hurt him.

I have a good friend that recently had a grinding wheel explode off a 6" angle grinder...3/4 of the 1/4" wheel went deep into his forearm...cut his muscles, tendons and nerve, he’s got a looonnnggg road ahead for recovery, if he even gets back to 100%...I could only imagine what would happen with a wheel that big…

My boss (Working at home) just cut his hand real bad, had to get bone grafted,
I understand he had the guard removed.
This (again I understand ) was just the regular size grinding wheel.
Thanks,
Tony

OK I talked to him, the guard was removed, but he said he used some kind of wheel like would be on a bench grinder.
And the wheel exploded.
He said it was too many RPM's for the wheel.
Thanks,
Tony

I had a 14" HF chop saw disk frag and bury itself in the wall of the garage. The second one did the same. That was the last hf abrasive I've messed with. If it penetrates 5/8" sheetrock...

We had a 9" grinder with no guard...dad wouldn't let me use it, but apparently it was ok for him to. Yeah, he buried it in his leg one day.

No way I would use a setup like that, the guards stay on all of my stuff, I wear safety glasses, a uvex bionic face shield, and heavy gloves. I like keeping my bits part of me.

I look at it like this: what position is he physically going to be in while using this monstrosity? He's either going to be squatted down, knees wide apart, working with the thing and using his junk as a catcher's mitt when the disc flies apart, or he'll be standing and working on something about waist level... using his junk as a catcher's mitt when the disc flies apart.

Me? I make it a point to think "Am I going to take one to the nuts doing this?" whenever I'm out in my shop.
I've found that obsessively worrying about the family jewels, and maintaining the ability to use them (keeping in mind things like "I **** at one-armed push-ups," etc.), has kept me in one piece all these years.

Chop saw blade to The Boys is something way, way WAY down on my to-do list. If your buddy isn't worried about walking into the ER holding a ****** shop rag against his zipper, and carrying a Zip-lock bag with road-kill in the other hand, you shouldn't be either.

That is one of the funniest posts I've read in quite some time. Good stuff, thanks for the laugh:lol:

Your friend should meet up with this guy.

man_wearing_plastic_bag_while_grinding.jpg

Plastic bag as a face shield, no gloves, no shoes, and he's ready to do some grinding.

I do appreciate how he is wearing a long sleeve shirt, so he doesn't burn up his arms.

I too have had a 4.5" grinder hit the top of my index knuckle while grinding with no guard. Cut straight to the bone. A year later I still cant tap on anything hard with that knuckle without pain. Only use a tool for what it was intended or else plan to accept the consequences.

I've witnessed someone do exactly that. I relocated to the other side of the shop until he was through the panel he needed to resize. For a genius, I've watched that guy do A LOT of stupid ****. He should have died several times over by now.
