Justin, hit me up when you need a tow.

How about a jump start, since it's stuck in my driveway?

Need to move this turd quick. Why doesn't key fob work?
Get other set of keys. Same result. ****, completely discharged battery...
Ok I have the key, but the lock tumbler fell inside the driver door. Fine, crawl though from passenger side.... Oh, well this is what $1200 gets me...

Rant:
Why did GM in their infinite wisdom use a @#%'n side terminal battery? I've despised them since first encounter. Clearly a poor design destine to strip out. Pain the the *** to get jumper cables on. The burb came with goofy jumper cables with the notch, but don't work for **** on a normal battery... Ok, rant over.

Not much progress in the shop last few weeks. Been making more time to spend with my kids as it seems life flies by. Didn't do enough boating last years so went out last 2 weekends, with last being 3 day camp trip at lake Roosevelt. My girls have got skiing down and now learning wakeboard. I'm a proud dad to get them off the tube and doing real water sports :)
They both do a lot of gymnastics so have good strength and body control, making it look easy. Now, if I can just get them to try the air chair...

Got C6 trans out to get rebuilt. 460 is moving along too, got pistons and delivered to machine shop so block can be honed and zero decked. Received a box of engine parts including custom cam, valvetrain and such. Head porting has long lead time but should be able to get short block assembled over the next few weeks, I hope.

Justin, not quite sure what happened but I noticed the other day that Bigblue&Goldie has been banned. I would like to know why as he usually had a lot of good information and I thought his posts added value but it appears he violates something somewhere.

As for your rant about GM and their batteries, I get it. I'm a GM guy and I don't particularly care for the side terminals either and not sure of the reasoning.

Good for you getting out and boating and spending time with your family. Trust me it goes by fast so cherish it and make the time now with them.

Looking forward to seeing the engine come together, even if it is a Ford engine.:lol_hitti

My shop isn't set up for woodworking but I have enough tools to make the things I want and enjoy the challenge. I started playing with wood and dangerous power tools in my dad's garage at a young age, mostly speaker boxes. I started making furniture in high school wood shop and made some decent pieces for a know-it-all teenager. By the middle of college I had made pretty much every piece of furniture in my home, out of oak. Style was more 'perfect' and hence boring like a typical engineer would do. I picked out the boards with perfect grains and no knots.

With my first daughter on the way I decided to make a crib and bedroom set all out of solid walnut. The set came out very nice but took many long days, nights & beers. I was burned out and now had a family to take care of so when daughter #2 arrived she got store bought stuff.

When Mrs. rattle_snake mandated relocation to horse property, the style of my old pieces didn't fit that of the home and it was time to move on. I successfully prevented the Mrs. from buying expensive but cheaply made imported **** while I built the shop and got the place under control. I think she liked the cabinet/workbench I built in her barn enough to wait for me to build some more custom pieces.

One of Mrs. rattle_snake's clients is a barn wood outfit in Phoenix, so I was able to get a good deal on gently used, previously owned material. I started with 150 brdft and went back to get another 75, in 8/4 and 6/4 in 'mixed' hardwoods. Should be enough for the 5 living room pieces I want to make.

I spent a long time making detailed plans while recovering from knee surgery. This was good because it forced me to have a solid plan for every aspect and construction detail. I was able to determine the dimension of every piece before starting. This helps when selecting pieces for certain places and being able to use the scraps for other known purposes. I wrote out the equations of the critical dimensions so I had confidence in cutting the pieces the next day or whenever.

Note that I am not a 'woodworker', and am more comfortable with a welder and a hammer. I adapt as needed with the tools I have to built to the plan.

1st piece is a TV stand. 3' tall, 7' long. One shelf and some doors, easy enough. Haha, well I spent over a week just staring at all the pieces of material and trying to decide and commit what to use where. But I couldn't so I started the cabinet with some plywood for the floor and back. All plywood joints are a dado/slot. Used a Caul to clamp some of the inner places.

As one would assume, old wood is not flat or straight. Each piece is unique and can be cupped, twisted, curved, bent or a combination of the four. This makes making anything square and straight very difficult. Since I don't have a joiner, I used a long piece of scrap as a joiner sled on my table saw. I taped shims in the right places for convex and twisted pieces to hold them in position as they pass though the blade. This allows parallel edges even if face is not flat.

Since all the barn wood wasn't going to get stained, I stained the plywood and started on the fascia for the doors.

Panels built face down in an attempt to make them flat out of different thickness and crooked pieces. I could have planed the back side everything but more work and some pieces have both sides exposed. I used my workbench as the basis for getting the clamps in a flat plane then positioning the strips as best as possible to get minimal twist vs. surface flatness.

The end panels got a slot to fit into the plywood. Old router took a **** so had to buy a new one. Got this Bosch 2.25 hp with a 1/2" collet to run bigger bits. Every project needs a tool purchase.

Shelf panel. Had to cherry pick the pieces that were straight for long enough to get a decent result.

The shelf also got a slots to interlock into the plywood. Cutting a flat slot into a panel of irregular thickness is non-trivial. Used shims and a cold beer to mitigate.

Panels and fascia are all connected with 3/8" or 1/2" dowels. No fasteners were harmed in the making of this piece. all connections and joints are slots or dowels.

The top is 84" and was difficult to find straight enough pieces that were also dramatic and interesting. I used cool looking but crooked pieces, and floated the resulting twisted panel into a flat/square frame that attaches to the ends.

Cabinet complete, and in-square in all dimensions better than I had hoped. Lots of ways to f it up. Tried to keep things within 1/16 everywhere as tolerances stack and things go to poo quick.

The doors are the most noticeable part of this piece so I spent a long time finding and saving the right pieces of material for them.

Gave everything a light sanding to increase contrast, and put on a minimal amount of matte spray can polyurethane. 4 coats on the top, 2 on other exterior surfaces.

To hide all the wires, power strips and ****, I made a curtain and attached it to the back of the top. Since the amps get hot, the thin speaker grill fabric made sense over solid wood. Can just flip up to access everything.

In it's natural habitat. Still need to re-wire and do something with the shelves from the old setup. TV was wall mounted before. The Adcom 555 powers a pair of 12" subs. I build my own active crossover and mounted it inside the Adcom preamp/tuner to feed the pair of amps, long ago (before children). I also made the main speakers including fancy passive filters back when I had access to specialized audio test equipment and environments.

Nice work Justin! Working with wood can be quite rewarding. I do a lot of mine out of necessity for Mrs. OutlawDrifter, like the floor to ceiling oak cabinets in our dining room. Quoted $9k to have them built/installed, less than $1k in materials when I completed the project!

Nice, post a pic of it.

Beautiful work Sir,
Well done

Thanks Royce!

Sir you have many hats!

Looking like you know what your doing!

I'll stick with my disclaimer in post #1...

That's amazing, love the colors!

Thanks. A little sealer really brings out the color and contrast.

Working on a coffee table and a pair of end tables next. Last piece is a bookshelf with doors. Started with the tops to select the coolest pieces out of the pile.
The middle panel is all out of pretty crooked wood. Was able to float it in the ring of flat grey wood pretty well. The edge pieces are not so consistent either but the frame will attached to the grey wood so should work out OK

Switching gears, I was able to pick up parts for my 466 Ford build.
Had the block bored, honed to pistons, and 'zero decked' (I'll see just how close to '0' they really got). Cam bearing installed.

Rods recon'd and pressed onto new pistons
Crank turned and polished. Rotating assembly balanced.
Since RPM and power level is relatively low, the factory rods will do fine even with heavy pistons. 12cc dish should get me to 9.3:1 static CR. The piston's comp height and decking the block will get quench to 0.050" and prevent detonation issues. Should run on 87 octane even in 115* heat. Can only get 91 here in AZ. Since target RPM and cam timings is mild, the gains from putting compression ratio at upper limit (around 10:1) don't provide much gain.

I like what you are doing with the various colors of wood.

Who did you end up going with for the machine work?

Engine ****!

Thanks, I try to suppress my engineering mind and get in touch with my artistic feelings...

I ended up going to 5 star engines in Glendale. It took awhile, and communication was not the best but overall a decent experience. They were busy and seem to have there stuff together.
I checked all journal clearances and they are correct and that's what counts.

How do you like that engine stand?

I need a new one.

It seems like I'd be tripping on those outrigger style legs all the time.

I always used the single leg models.

Beautiful job on the woodwork btw.

I always used the single leg models.

Beautiful job on the woodwork btw.

I love the engine stand because it was free.
The benefit of the 4 wheel design is better stability and you can put a drain pan under it.

Thanks, going to make some more sawdust this weekend.

Completed end tables and coffee table this weekend. Was able to get a solid 12 hours in on them both Saturday and Sunday.

Tops glued up and ready for sanding. The wood species are poplar, walnut and maple. Bases are mostly oak. hard to tell what any given piece is until it is cut.

The side and lower shelf panels are attached with a slot. Since both pieces are varying thickness, the slot is complicated...

Yes, my shop gets completely messy at times.

Forward edge pieces have some interesting insect tunnels.

For the finish I used minwax's polycrylic water based matte clear. To get a thicker coat to further protect against spills (like wine) I used a quart instead of the spray can. Lowes had a spray bottle display next to the minwax products so I had a great idea to combine the two. The product is thin enough and worked great out of spray bottle. I used a brush to even it out. Was able to apply inside the shop as there is no odor with the product. Went super fast and was ready to sand in 30 min for next coat.
Here is one table with finish and other without.

Coffee table center pieces were all very crooked but I chose them because they looked cool and I didn't learn from past difficulties.

The grey ring is flat and square which is where legs are attached.

I contemplated many leg and brace styles. Most overly complicated and not well suited for raw finish wood. I wanted something simple, but I couldn't find any decent 4x4s at the barn wood yard.
So I chose to use a 4x4 that I had, which was from a 10' skid that the shop wall sheetmetal came on. The other 4x4 is the shelf supports above the workbenches. I used the skid to plasma cut all the sheetmetal on, so the wood has random burn marks. I assembled the legs in pairs to keep them square and in a flat plane.

All the pieces have dowels to connect each other to make it robust. Has to be able to survive being drug across the floor on one leg.

Justin,
I have to compliment you again on the beautiful furniture.
To my eye, the colors, the texture, the timber layout and the elegant design are a sight to behold.

Thanks again Royce. I was concerned after I bought the first batch of wood that I may not like the result. Barn wood and rusty stuff is a fad now, hipster bars are full of it. I was hoping for something that will stand the test of time, we shall see...
Our home is a sante fe style with exposed hand peeled poles and such, so the rough wood isn't out of place.

I have started on the last piece, a bookshelf. Have most of the main cabinet done.

Mrs rattle_snake has pointed out that as nice as the furniture is, she is still waiting on the barn door she ordered 4 years ago....
:dunno:
My response containing the long list of accomplishments and upgrades to her horse stalls, barn and whatnot didn't seem to help.

Almost done with the last piece of furniture. Trying to finish up the wood projects so I can do a deep clean and move on the the engine build.

Like the tv stand I started the cabinet with oak ply and the door fascia.

I then proceeded to carefully mark the dowel position incorrectly, at the rest position instead of correct dimension.
:(
Given the glued slots and dowels, the piece can only go together one way, and not apart.
The fascia corner was crooked by 0.375". This would ensure very poor door alignment and metal anguish so I decided to saw it back apart through the dowels and correct the alignment.

Some of the boards had insect holes, which look pretty cool. After cutting into them I realized how infested they used to be. Still structurally solid but lots of tunnels. Assuming they are termites.

The door pieces were also home to some creatures, in this case carpenter bees. They eat a surprisingly consistent round hole.

Sounds about like my wood crafting projects! Measure carefully 10x only to miscalculate a dimension.

Root cause failure analysis on the dimensional calculations strongly indicate that the responsible engineer failed to incorporate a critical design criteria.

Management has implemented corrective actions and processes to curtail subsequent occurrences in 12oz doses.
12.jpg

Like Homer, the responsible engineer was worked on nuclear controls and safety systems.

Cut the doors apart and wasted an hour or so contemplating how to arrange the pieces in the 'best' way. Ended up adding a grey 2x6 cut in half onto the inner edges. I cut material off of all the others to re-adjust the ratios of the pieces to get them balanced. Then re-glued and touched up the finish.
Management admits the result is improved as it incorporates a 2nd color into the front of the piece to match the sides and top.

True measure of a craftsman is how he fixes his mistakes. Good recovery, looks intended.

Thanks. True in many aspects of life. Something I try to teach my kids.

I make plenty of mistakes on all my projects. Honestly the furniture project had fewer than expected given the complexity. I think the detailed plans help to reduce. Some nights my mental capacity sags to a critical low level and I have to just stop and continue the next day.

The burb battery continues to go completely dead (1V) after a week or so. My charger indicated 'bad bat', but battery is new so I disconnected from vehicle and was able to charge it fully. I think the charger's algorithm interprets an external current draw at the end of the cycle as a failure mode, as the V/I curve is wrong.

Anyhow I measured a continuous current draw at about 0.5A. Given 60 Ah capacity, the time to discharge is around 120 hrs or 5 days.

I noticed the horse trailer's e-brake battery charge light was on, indicating that the burb powers the trailer connector at all times. Unplugging trailer confirmed the draw. I tested the emergency breakaway system and it works properly so trailer battery is in good condition and not just consuming current.
The Ford's I've had have a relay circuit to prevent this. Engine must be running for a few seconds before delivering power to connector.

So options to leave trailer plugged in are
- voltage threshold type battery separator
- delayed relay from ACC power
- solar panel/float charger
- sell and buy a Ford.

Coincidentally, my Cobra battery has similar issue. Battery at 1v. After overnight charge, charger says 'bad bat'. I looked up paperwork and Motorcraft battery is 4.5 years old, which is really old in AZ. Most batteries last 2-3 years.
So I picked up a new battery. I decided to measure current draw just in case.... 5 Amps. hum. Will go dead before morning.
Traced current going through my dedicated heavy gauge alternator-to-battery wire (in parallel to the factory wiring). Disconnecting it routed current through the main cable. So I had a hunch that the alternator is cooked once again. The alternator can only be seen or touched from below so I put the car on the lift and confirmed the sink was the alternator output.

So why did I not learn from the day before and charge the cobra battery isolated from the car? Don't know but I've got a new battery now.

I found my spare alternator but it needed rebuild as well. The current one made it 4 years, which 3x-4x longer than the others. I think it was an E-bay special warranty replacement. Pulled it out, getting both rebuilt locally. I built a heat shield and a fresh air duct long ago but hard to tell if helpful.

Made some progress on 466 build. Got the crank installed and end play set. Measured all the rings in their respective bores. Target gap is 0.025 for a little N20. 2nd comp rings were all ok but about half of the upper comp rings needed +0.001. I was able to borrow a piston ring file to do it right. Overall pretty consistent. Installed all the rings.

Final machine work check was deck height. I asked for 'zero' but shop was reluctant to go down that far. They claimed that they would check all 4 corners. Looking at bearings, they only installed #1 and #3 main and one set of rod bearings. So I doubt they checked the rear.
I set #1 to TDC and measured deck with a click style depth gauge. It was 0.005 down. Installed pistons 2, 3, & 4, the left bank is about 0.001. Not what I had hoped for, but I need to install the other 4 and re-measure all. The difference in compression ratio is negligible.

“Thanks again Royce. I was concerned after I bought the first batch of wood that I may not like the result. Barn wood and rusty stuff is a fad now, hipster bars are full of it. I was hoping for something that will stand the test of time, we shall see...
Our home is a sante fe style with exposed hand peeled poles and such, so the rough wood isn't out of place.”

Justin, the furniture looks amazing!!! We have a lake house and my wife wants a big farm style table made. The ones she showed me are exactly what you described “Hipster Bar/House” furniture. Something that is a Fad right now. I’m going to show her your stuff and try to lead her this direction. We’ve have spent a **** load on different style tables, end tables, coffee tables and she just doesn’t like them after a while. Again, great job!

I’m amazed at the lack of detail on the machine work. I always go over all the measurements before even I even load up. Then compare when I get home with the freshly machined parts. I will say that the tools used (the shops sunnen vs my Fowler and Mitutoyo) are quite different. They still should be damn close. Short block is shaping up otherwise.

I don't have much knowledge of the machining processes used or the limitations. Not sure what reference they used, crank CL or existing deck or ? I wonder how good the 1976 factory tolerances were.
With all pistons installed the results are sufficient for the application. None of the pistons are out of the block.
With quench at 0.050-0.055 and static CR at 9.1, it should be very detonation resistant. Goal is 425hp on regular 87 octane.
