I'm trying to find some gear stock in a 16 dp, 32T. I need to confirm pa, but so far, I can't even find a place that stocks anything lower than 20 dp. Anybody have a source for this?

If you want a bore able hub then Martin has s1632 for 14 1/2 pa and ts1632 for 20 pa

I am thinking though what you want is pinion wire? If so it is not available in any thing bigger than 20dp as its a cold drawn material and the forces get to large.

I was going to say Spacely Sprockets, but I think - when I was in mfg - most of our gear stock came from Boston Gear.

Thanks for the replies. What I have found is that I can get spur gears in that size, but they tend to not fit all of my requirements. Specifically, I need to be able to press a dog clutch onto one side and leave a small hub on the other. I have't gotten the machine apart yet to know exactly how long it all has to be, but it's in the neighborhood of 1.5", I think. I did check Boston Gear and SPI. Several places have pinion wire, but yes, it does seem to go up to 20DP. It seems that once you get above a certain diameter, they stop calling it pinion wire, but the DP still doesn't get any better for me.

I have been spending a lot of time on the Monarch forum over on PM lately, having just picked up a 10ee that needs some work, so I'll ask there, too. I can cut a new gear, if I have to, but if I can get gear stock that just has to be cut down, that would be much easier.

Thanks!
Dave

Can you machine the hub portion and cut out the hub of a standard gear for a shrink fit? After the ring is shrink fitted on drill and ream a hole for a dowel pin to lock it all together.

In a 10EE there are no 20deg PA gears. All 14.5 deg PA.

The most important feature of a gear is that the ID and OD run concentrically.

When you learn the OD if you have bore-able pie-style soft jaws for a 3 jaw chuck this is the best idea.

If its made by Boston or the like with a pre-bored center, you can indicate the center hole in a 4-jaw chuck to maintain the same concentricity.

Yeah, I can do all that. Most of the ready-made gears don't have enough hub to hold the ring, though. I believe I also need material on both sides of the gear.

This isn't from mine, but is what I need to replicate with a smaller bore.

Yep. No luck. They don't stock gear stock (at least I don't see it on the site) and the standard gears don't seem to have the dimensions I need.

Like other places, they stock gear stock up to 20DP, but nothing numerically lower.

Thanks, Matt! I did find, after more reading, that yes, they are all 14.5 PA. I may have to have a gear made. It's not the end of the world if I do. Of course, if I do have it made, I can have it bored and broached, too. I'm tossing the idea around in my head of buying a set of cutters, but I know I am not likely to turn out as nice a gear as if I get it from somebody who has all of the equipment to hob one correctly. And how many gears would I have to make for the cutters to pay for themselves?
