Input from Sweden.
I have worked a LOT on old MBs and always used original MB brake/clutch parts, which are most often made by a German brake and clutch company, Alfred Teves.
They supply a tube of blue ATEVE grease in all their kits. They also sell the same lube in a 2 dl can with a nice applicator brush.
Also use their brake fluid.
Never a problem and it seems to retain it´s properties for well over 25 years on hobby cars that sits 98% of the time so nothing brake/clutch related ever wears out.

Funny, I've been binge watching SMA this winter and noticed him using the purple, hence why I'm researching. Although I haven't seen him use it on rubber, does he?

This is so frustrating, I bought a jar of the green ultra permatex a year ago thinking this is gonna be THE ONE and just used it for the first time. I could have sworn at the time, it was the only one permatex recommended for rubber?

I have tried Silglyde and didn't have much luck longevity wise so I'm glad to hear others say the same, thinking I also had swelling with it? I didn't realize the silicone content was so low, that's Interesting. That's probably why I didn't get the red silicone permatex, because I assumed silglyde WAS silicone.

Somewhere in there I used CRC brake grease which just looks like moly grease, I actually didn't have rubber problems with it but got nervous it could since it doesn't say for rubber.

I have a heck of a time keeping brakes lubed, I blame the salt up here. I have found it best to re-lube once a year or they freeze up.

Think I will get the 3m silicone and chuck the permatex, or use it on back of pads but it doesn't even sound good for that.

SMA uses it on everything and says hes never had a problem. Personally I've always used straight silicone paste or Toyota rubber lube.

I just sent Eric O a bottle of the 3M silicone via Amazon.

Maybe it will show up on a brake job video in the future.

Yes, numerous videos of him applying it to the boot groove at the end of the pin. I don't think hes doing anything wrong, per say. Hes done enough that if he was encountering a problem im sure he would of switched.

Given a choice I wouldn't use it but that's me. I'm sure he likes the convenience of having one product for pins and pads instead of silicone and a moly based pad grease.

That's cool, I hope so! It'll be interesting to hear his thoughts.

I like the idea of using two different lubes. One for pins that stays nice and clean (don't want grit in your pins) and one for pad surfaces.

I do piece by piece, own the same stuff for a long time. A little smear of grease is different than something soaked in gear lube. I havnt seen a swelled part in some time. Look at all the brake problems we hear about on this forum. Most were from people using the "best" or premium parts. We use about the cheapest, the stock stuff the jobber hands us over the counter, cant remember the last time we had a problem parts related.

I have seen several mention that the acdelco and raybestos silicone paste are Fuchs chemplex 839, all have ptfe. I found a acdelco msds that says that but can't find one on raybestos or Fuchs.

Mission auto silicone reviews are good also but can't find a msds. I will go with 3m, I have no use for a product that they hide the msds, or what's in it.

If that's not an empty jar, keep it for metal to metal contact points. ;)

+1... I use that on my trailer hitch balls and lube for rebuilding my tongue jack screw and bearing. Works way better than traditional greases for those and after many years towing there's been very little wear or scratching on either component.

Eric O dropped a fresh brake job video today. The bottle of 3M I sent did NOT make an appearance but he did have a few words on the purple stuff and brake lube in general starting at 13:05. Almost like he's a member here on GJ. Hmmm.

His philosophy; I'll use whatever the heck shows up from where ever I got todays parts order from.

He obviously doesn't have an issue continuing to use purple stuff. Which just got with my earlier theory I posted; pro's don't see enough long term returns to establish a pattern. While he isn't a parts cannon, think about brakes for a bit; often loaded calipers are the typical response, with no way of determining it was from your choice of brake lube.

We on the other hand over analyize everything, we have our vehicles a long time, and tend to notice things that would not affect say, my work truck that gets brakes much more often than my own truck. I would see issues on my truck, my work van gets that much more attention and a set of loaded calipers before any issue would crop up.

The mechanic that services Jay Lenos cars, that guy would see problems long term. Or anyone who maintains a bunch of low use cars that are kept long term. Those are the people who need to throw in their professional experience with brake lubes.

I saw that, I think that's his second video with it but he didn't really say anything the first time.

I wonder also, he very rarely lubes the pins/rubber bushings so naturally he isn't going to see much issue with it. The purple is probably a super good one to use for the slides.
