Re: Snap On dealer discounts

Many years ago. My local Snap on dealer would offer a discount if I made a mid to large purchase and paid for the items in full at the time of purchase. Normally, it was 10% over $100 + items thrown in if it was a larger amount.

My dealer retired and I no longer work at a shop. I have around 6 dealers that are in driving distance. The one dealer that I have known for a few years, does not offer deals for anything other than what is on the monthly flyer. I rarely break tools so the warranty has not been an issue. Basically, I show up and buy items with cash. It is usually a hassle tracking the truck down in rush hour traffic. Starting to feel like it is easier to order from the Snap on website.

Curious about what the other dealers offer in the way of discounts for purchase amounts of $100, $300, $500 and $1,000+ for hand tool purchases. Please share your recent experiences?

Getting to purchase a large order of items and want to see if I should branch out and try another dealer or not.

PS. The tool boxes seem to have a lot more flexibility, so I do not want to bring those in this thread.

List and only list price unless it's on promo. I own a lot less Snap-On because of it; that, and historically spotty dealer service.

I had a slew of dealers who would negotiate with me, upto 50% off stuff that was sitting dusty on the truck, and usually more like 25% on things that weren't on the truck.

I was a shop owner, and I always paid cash, never carrying a balance.

I've been in a different field for years now, and buying from snap-on.com (until the whole shipping debacle has me thinking about finding a dealer on a nearby route).

My dealer is also usually list price, unless there is a promo. He is good about letting me know about the promos, though.

Mine usually gives me 10-15%. The discount is close to 15% if it’s an item he has on the truck. If I don’t want the “swag” they’re giving away he will give me other freebies like pliers.

I come with cash, so I don’t know if he’s the same with the guys making payments. Individual results will vary wildly based on the driver.

mine gives me between 20-30% off retail. He will throw in other deals that have been sitting around because I pay in cash. It’s an addiction for me so i try to stay off the truck. He always checks in and warranties anything i bring to him.

It really depends on the dealer. I could see a slight discount happening if I were negotiating a price for a tool box. But otherwise, I'm not a big spender and I pay up front. I buy a lot of used Snap on tools and warranty a lot of stuff. I don't even bother asking for a discount off list price.

Haven't bought new off the truck in years but when I was semi regular, I'd get 10% for paying on the spot. Works best if its a new dealer and he has a tool payment to make.

Really depends on the dealer and your relationship with them and how regular you buy.

My dealer will deal on stock that's on the truck. Anything he orders for me is the price it is. Theres no discount for cash, the way our tax works there is no advantage to him if I pay cash, it just means more to take to the bank.

I typically carry a balance of $150, it motivates him to come regularly

I think the only deal I ever got on a tool truck was for my snap-on ball joint press, normally about $700, got it for $600 and a free hat, but I don't try haggling. I just ask the price and if it's more than I want to pay, I say I'll pass for now. Otherwise just get the little freebies, hats, socks, pocket screw drivers and such

I think we should get a discount for paying in full since the retail price has the finance charge for truck credit built into it. 10 percent shouldn't kill the dealer I wouldn't think.

Re: Snap On dealer discounts

I'm fortunate enough to live right next to a very large garage and oil company in which the Snap On Dealer pulls up right outside my house every Tues morning. The franchise is actually shared by two gentleman and they have been absolutely great to me over the years. Sometimes I will pay list price but its always less than what online is charging (s/h charges) but a lot of times he will knock anywhere between 10%-25% off just to keep me coming back. Of course they do have the ever constantly changing promos, such as bring in anything that remotely resembles a ratchet and get 25% off a brand new ratchet. They were even accepting large bolts, they just had to resemble the same weight of a ratchet LOL. The best deal I've gotten from them was the purchase of a Snap On Verus with all the personality keys and connectors but minus the lab scope lead wires for $300 cash last year. It was updated to version 15.4 and is one of my most cherished tools mostly due to the lab scope function as I purchased new leads, amp clamps and fuse loops from AESwave. I've also been given free Snap on Calendars, Hats, wool socks and other little gifts at Christmas time. I just wish I could buy more tools with him but my goals have changed a bit in the last year but he still sends me a text from time to time to come and check out their current promos which I'm always happy to do. It doesn't sound like too many of the other dealers are like this according to all of your posts, it's a shame.

Re: Snap On dealer discounts

My dealer would basically give away an item if it was on the truck long enough. Other than that its list price. Granted he did extend a discount if i could pay my entire balance that day. Granted it was the day he was quitting.

Re: Snap On dealer discounts

Like people said, it depends on the dealer. My best advice is to find ONE dealer that you are comfortable with and ONLY buy from that dealer. That way you are building a good relationship, hopefully. At least that is how I have been doing it for the past 15++ years and it has worked for me great. Still while sometimes I got great discounts, other times I did not. My guess is that it also depends on the time of the year and how strong business is for the dealer at any given time. I believe the best time to buy (business slow) and to get the best deals is in the first few months of the year.

Re: Snap On dealer discounts

I dealt with a Snap On dealer years back that offered a discount, and more recently another who stuck firm to his asking price telling me how great the tools were. Needless to say I thanked him for letting me look and walked away with nothing. Now if I buy Snap On I look for deals on eBay.

Re: Snap On dealer discounts

I have a close relative who has a SO truck. He works 12+ hours a day 6 days a week. He gives everyone a discount of at least 10% and many free items for regular customers such as shirts, hoodies, socks, hats, etc.
He makes less money, but makes it up in volume and loves helping his customers. He is one of the top salesmen in the region in sales and customer service. He takes care of warranties as well.

It all depends on the franchise owner.

I'd gladly do business with someone like him.

Re: Snap On dealer discounts

The Snap-on truck in my area carries a bare-bones inventory, and the dealer always complains that no one is buying. He seems to be on the verge of shutting down.

The local Matco truck seems to be doing a lot better and is much better stocked. Success often comes down to personalities and contacts. The Matco dealer is much more talkative and personable. In business, personal relationships are often more important than anything else. Being able to talk to your customers--even just bullshitting about various topics is really important in establishing a customer base.

My snap on dealer is a bare bones inventory as well. I think his prices are reasonable.
