Howdy GJ,

I've been without a compressor for long enough now and wondered if I could ask some guidence on what my next move should be. Sold my previous compressor, a 20 gal Husky that did it's job but on occasion would run more than I would like, continuous.

I am now thinking of going to a 60 gal and have been impressed with the positive attitude people have about the Quincy brand. The problem I am having is finding spec sheets on the different models they have available. So finding the right one is hard for me to research.

My needs: This compressor will be going into my attached garage and eventually my detached once it is built. So I want to make the inital investment now. Basically I need a compressor that will fill tires, run the standard DIY mechanic tools and handle a descent amount of blowing. In either home it will have two air outlets so the potential of having two tools running is there but slim. I have no idea my CFM requirements....1/2" impact, cut off wheel, die grinder, etc...No painting or sand blasting.

I guess if someone could suggest a resource for Quincy models, that would be great. Or any suggestions on size or other brands aswell. TIA. I'm hoping with a budget of $1500 it will get it done.

I know this topic is a common one, I am continuing to do searches as we speak.

Dave

If you are near a Northern Tools store, try checking this unit or one similar to this one;

http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200350475_200350475#

The pump rpm is not super slow (1310) but it is quieter than most compressors out there. It has a 100% duty cycle and comes with a 5HP Baldor motor. If you take care of it, your grandkids will be using it long after you are gone.

I have a QT-5 that I bought new about 15 years ago. Never had a single problem with any part of it and it still looks and runs like brand new. If you buy a Quincy you will be passing it down to your kids and it will probably be the last compressor you will have to buy.

I bought my Quincy from TPtools. It's $200 more now though. I paid $1199 for the #8805-39DS. I love it. Plenty of air for what I use it for

That seems to be exactly the model I would be looking for. No norther tool in MO. Have to order in I guess.

Pilot the answer to your question depends on what type of gune you are planning to use . A decent HVLP will be between 4-6 CFM roughly. I have a US General 5HP 60 gallon single stage a little shy of 13 CFM at 90 PSI and I have yet to have a problem shooting paint with it and I dont own any devilbis guns :D.

Rick-you are a smat guy, that US General si a HF unit, but it is made by Belaire. I was looking at compressors a while ago, I called all over and one guy stated that is is a b-stock bellaire. I then called Belaire and they confirmed it, but they also said that the do not put Baldor motors on them when they get sold as US General. If I were you, I would total jump on a US general, $1500 compressor for $700, not a bad deal.

I couldn't be happier with my Quincy after dealing with the deafening noise and constant running of my 5 hp 60 gallon piece of **** Craftsman. I broke down and got a 2 stage, 5 hp, 80 gallon Quincy and a happy camper now. This beast quietly catches up and cuts off while I am cabinet blasting and has plenty of air for any job I need if for. I got an automatic drain for it so I have air 24 hours a day - No waiting for the tank to fill up - Something I would recommend especially if your compressor is in a separate room and you don't keep up with daily draining.
Get the Quincy - You can't go wrong!!

We have a Quincy at work (FD) out side in a lean to with some insulation and it is quiet. The IRs are quite a bit noisier, some of that may be from the mechanical room they are installed in, and have not been trouble free with just light usage

DigDug, not to get off-topic or hijack this thread, but are they still doing the "Bristol Stomp" in Bristol PA? :bounce:

For the record I have the 5HP 60G Quincy and love it. Keeps up with everything I throw at it, and then some. Highly recommended. Customer service is great too. Mine was delivered with a hairline crack in a brass tee and they sent out a tech to repair it with a couple of days. I offered to install the parts but they really suggested having a tech check it out on their dime. I considered Eaton and IR but ultimately decided the Quincy was for me.

My wife's old company used to have Quincy as a sister company. She told me that every December she got an email with employee pricing on units. She only told me this after Quincy was sold off. Damn that woman.

Luckily, I still have the Speedaire unit her father gave me when he bought an upright compressor.

after being plagued with the curse of the compressors and throwing a gallon of mixed paint away i went with a Ingersoll Rand SS5L5 18.1 cfm @ 90 psi and it is more than i could have asked for and the price was right and i was able to return the brand new locked up kobalt and pick it up the same day from tsc. it is a little louder than the smaller pumps but keeps up with anything even cycling on and off while sand blasting.

After reading through all the posts I was able to narrow the margins and it even brought up some questions, so I need to get back to the research. Thanks all!!

After the suggestions for an automatic drain I looked into some at it appears Quincy offers an electric and one other style, cant remember the name. This sounds like a deffinant for me. Probably go with the electric.

After the suggestion of the QT-5 I did some looking into them. Seems there are 3 different QT-5 models and they may be pushing the budget and the needs. But...they did bring up some questions about the quality/life expectancy of the magneto starter vs the capcitor start.?. It looks like the 60G model dosent not use a magneto start. I'll need to research the benefits to both here I guess.

One direct question I have is the mounting location. The corner I will be putting the unit in has a slight fall to it as my garage floor slopes away from the walls and toward the door. While good for drainage, how will this suit for mounting purposes? Will I need to do some shimming on the crate?

An additional thought was the different filtration systems that are out there for between tank and tools. Again more research...

Again thanks for the info and online purchase locations!! And thanks to Bull for getting this back online for me!

EB anything we can help with let us know . Thats what this forum is here for helping each other out and on that note Thanks Bull for cleaning up the mess . I have been a member here since we were Garage Junkies long long ago and I personally will not put up with guys with less than 100 posts attacking new guys with questions . With less than 100 posts if you cant provide a decent answer to a question " Then dont answer " . I for one will turn you in to the Mods for this kind of nonsense as that is not what this board is about :D.
