I have a small bedroom (13x10.5) and I want to install 2 recessed lights above the headboard area above the bed. My bed sits the longer way of the room , so I have to evenly space between the 10.5 and in off the 13. I don't think you want them shining right in your mug . Since these are retro fit, I have one shot at getting it right , or out comes the drywall and texture gun. Any tips where to put em? Thanks

if you can look above ,locate the studs otherwise you just might need the drywall

If I were putting them in a bedroom I'd put them against the wall and use wall wash trim to create a more dramatic effect. You could probably drill a few small holes (easily patched) to find the joists before going all in.

24 inches off the wall and 15 inches from outside of bed towards the middle on each side so they will be around 30-40 inches apart, then put a dimmer in

Mustang beat me to it: install a dimmer. Can't stress that enough. This will help mitigate any issues with having them located in a less than ideal location. If you've got a significant other maybe even put each light on it's own dimmer next to the nightstands (if either of you is a read-in-bed type).

Awesome advice gang , my attic is pretty accessible so I can find the studs. Dimmer is a good idea, but I'm slowly adding the Phillips Hue bulbs through my house. Expensive but pretty fun

You can add them over each side near the head of the bed, and preferred to be switched separately from the rest light sources. But avoid placing them directed over the bed. Try to use adjustable trim, will give you flexibility.

We just returned from a lengthy road trip and stayed in several Holiday Inn Express hotels. The rooms were all similarly appointed and we really enjoyed them. One in particular had a bed lighting arrangement that was really impressive. Room had two Queen sized beds with a night stand in between. The attached to the wall darkwood headboard, which was perhaps 2 or 2.5 inches thick, gave the impression of being continuous, but had at least three sections; two ~60" sections above the beds and a ~36" piece above the night stand. Contained (and concealed) in the top of the headboard sections above the beds was a 4' single T8 light which shined up the wall. It gave a very nice illuminating effect.

Then, attached to the headboard, one at each corner of the beds were flexible gooseneck LED lights. They made perfect lights for reading, working the computer or lighting up most anything. The switch was in the center of the base plate.

We are [meaning the wife is] possibly planning changes to the homeowner's bedroom and will sure consider this kind of lighting as it was very functional. Found the gooseneck lights doing an Internet search. Not badly priced. Haven't looked for headboards but such a light could be fairly easily adapted if the real headboard product can't be found.

Using a wall washer recessed lights to light the bedroom walls, will give you a great visual effect. and If you are planning to install recessed light fixtures in any room on the top level of your house, use airtight recessed light units.

I did this last year and used 3" led can lights. I added separate dimmers for each side. I can sleep while my wife reads.
