Recommend me a gasket scraper

Not as **** as a new power tool or wrench, but I could use a gasket scraper to make a tedious job easier. I'll be changing a couple of gaskets (valve cover, water pump, possibly oil pan) and am looking for a tool to make this quicker/easier.

Also, after scraping, what's the recommended way to finish mating surfaces for rubber gasket and/or liquid gasket application? Scotchbrite pad?

Super Scraper. Its basically a sharpened carbide block and shaves right down to bare metal. I've had mine for a few years and it works great. After that just a quick wipe with some brake cleaner and you're ready for a new application.

I think some of the trucks rebrand them now but I got mine through carbide processors.

I would get the osbornes and sand the handle down to bare wood. Will be nice and gripy when they're oily/greasy.

I use razor blades, buy them by the box. Sometimes I put them in a razor blade holder.

I have the super scraper SS5 (same as in that youtube video you've linked). Its the perfect size for most gasket pan widths. Huge fan of it. Its also mentioned on the packaging that the scraper can be sent in for sharpening if ever needed.

These are my usual gotos:

The Snap-on I've had a few years and there's been many of other brands similar to it I've used up over the years, but the razor scraper I've had for 30yrs or more. Pretty sure it was one of my very first tool purchases and it's somehow lasted. These will get the job done, but that Super Scraper looks like something I need to try out. I like the look of that one Eric O. is using in that video, but I don't seem to see the SS5 actually for sale anywhere though. I guess the SS1 it is then.

as for your question about scotchbrite pads, you want to be real careful where you use them. the dust from the pad can ruin an engine so, avoid using the pads when the dust can get into the lube/oil system.

Spray gasket remover followed by brake clean helps too. just be careful not to gouge aluminum surfaces.

I have ground the ends of several worn out files. You can get whatever profile you need for any surface. If you use a Nicholson file it will be harder than any scraper other than carbide. Most other brands will be soft inside which can also be useful.

What type of gasket material?

For paper type gaskets, I use a combo of a titan blade holder with HD single edge blades to lift off as much as possible, then the super scraper.

I love the super scraper, however it does not do a good job of lifting paper gaskets. It does plow through the "residue" like butter though.

I have the Meuller Keups two piece long carbide scraper set. About $50. Razor blade scrapers are also good for some gaskets

Seems like the company designed the original SS with non-automotive uses in mind, and discovered that many customers were using them for automotive gaskets, and decided to design a scraper with automotive use in mind.

Not many, including Carbide Processors, have this in stock.

I have that three piece set..I should have left them in the dime store and bought a new Snap-on to replace the 40+ year old one still in use.

The Snap-on is so worn that it gets narrower with each sharpening; but it still puts the others to shame.

Razor blade, scotchbrite pad, snap on gasket scraper, putty knife, hunting knife, finger nail, piece of hardwood, even a piece of aluminum square stock, carb cleaner, brake clean.....they all work for removing gaskets.

Also got a Mac branded razor scraper with a fixed handle and a setscrew. Not sure the PN, just one of the ones that is in the "fishbowl" at the front of the truck.
Razor blade in my folding Bluepoint(?) holder WSC2. Careful with the cookie wheels on a grinder. They can gouge aluminum pretty easy if you go crazy. Also they can put abrasive dust where you dont want it. We actually received a bulletin about the abrasive dust problem.
