After being shown the light (ha!) earlier this year by a friend on how useful headlamps are for working on stuff even in normal lighting situations I've gone through about 3 of the cheaper ones. Looking to invest in a decent one now.

Depends what u wanna spend, how big a battery back you can live with, and how long the run time. The Milwaukee rechargable model is nice. They make one that takes regular batteries too. I have a Coast light thats big (HL8 , not the HL8R) , but the runtime and output is amazing.

Check the coast website. Dont let the lower prices fool you into thinking they arent worth it. Compare lumens vs runtime. Things are worthless if they only last an hour or 2. Rechargeable lights are great - until youre waiting for them to recharge. Consider how long you might realistically need the thing, compare that with runtime and if replacement batteries are available or worth buying. A costco pack of 48 AA or AAA batteries might be worth it for you to get a cheaper light and give up on HAVING to make sure one more thing is plugged in before you leave. Only you will know..

When i was doing more emergency calls at night - i wasnt willing to chance NOT having my light charged, and i get free batteries at work anyway. Being able to swap in a few new AA’s and be back up and running was better for me at the time.

Do not underestimate coast. They work great, dont cost a lot, and you wont cry if something bad happens to em.

I like the coast from home depot.
Has spot and flood adjustment.
Has brightness adjustment. (Dimmer type)
Takes 3 AAA batteries, never wait for it to charge.
This is the one i have.

Zebralight - warm/floody

This right here.

I have a warm/floody Zebralight for work on up close stuff.

I have another Zebralight that has more of a spot pattern for walking around type work.

I also have a couple of Petzl Tikkas, a PrincetonTech, and various Fenix that can be headband mounted, but the Zebralights are superior.

Stream light double clutch.
Two light modes and an off position. Twist to actuate and “double twist/click” to go brighter or dimmer. 2 brightness levels.

I like simplicity and I like lights that aren’t blue colored. I like rechargeable but also I like to stuff in a few AAA’s and be ready to go. This headlamp covers all those bases. Comes with rechargeable battery that can be removed and replaced with AAA’s.

I’m in maintenance if that helps, good luck searching!

Yup. I have 3 Zebralight headlamps (the shop & one in each car). Well built lights and you can pick and choose your battery type, lens type, color temp, etc. The high CRI models are really nice for under hood work.

Shurefires larger one is awesome! I have had one for years and it never fails me. Very well built, long batt life, perfect light beam for working with your hands. Not cheap, but lifetime warranty and high quality. If in your price range, check them out. I tried shurefires smaller headlamp, but did not care for it. Sent it back and got the bigger one.

Coast makes high quality lights. It's widely available at Home Depot etc.

A while ago, I got a 2pc from Costco for about $20. Twist focusing, White/Red lights, and 405 lumens.

I bought a $10 one from Homedepot, mine has the COB "big yellow bar" plus a small red LED, works well.

Try a few and see what style you like and features you want better, then spend $$$ as needed.

I liked them at first.
Until the batteries started leak and into the electronics, then the entire thing became useless. I actually had 4 of these. All dead due to leaks into led board. (Yeah i know, i should have remove the batteries when not in use.. but who does that)

Now I prefer head lamp with battery compartment that separate from the led board.

I've used several over the past 20 years for camping, backpacking, hunting, anything requiring handsfree light. I've only used Princeton Tec for the past decade. Needed their customer service once and they were so good and went over and above what was required that they're all I'll use from now on. Petzl would be my second recommendation.

I have an LED Lenser H7R.2 and it is excellent.
Rechargeable.
Good run time when fully charged.
Adjustable brightness and adjustable focus.
Cost me approx. £65

Not sure if that brand is available in the US????

I think Coast is the same company as LED Lenser. Just different brand name in different countries.

Totally agree, and bought that same pack from Costco - think it was even a .97 deal where they were reducing them. HD likes to sell these as well on Black Friday, so you can usually get them quite cheap vs the high quality of the product.

Problem is using Alkaline batteries. Maybe try nimh or lithium rechargeables. Never seen a leaking nimh battery. Not sure if they can leak. :dunno:

Edit. Just seen you don't like rechargeables.

I have a Jetbeam HR30 that I really like.

Fast charging with USB-C. Can use one 18650 rechargeable lithium ion with sleeve, or a bigger 20700 for even more juice, or if you can't recharge it will take two CR123A Li-ion non-rechargeables.

Rechargeable batteries don't leak, Lithium batteries don't leak.

If you have to use regular Alkaline batteries, just make sure to take them out when you are done.

I'd rather have choices, instead of being forced to use built in batteries.

Those of you with headlamps with the strap that goes over the top of your head - do you find that objectionable? I have a cheap headlamp without the overhead strap, and it does tend to slip downwards.

I've been more than happy with Energizer headlamps. I've had cheaper brands which sucked and one more expensive brand that didn't impress me for its price. Energizer seemed to hit the sweet spot for quality vs. price.

I asked this question once before and I ended up just getting a Quantum from Harbor Freight.

Well I came across a Milwaukee 2103 this weekend and ordered it from eBay for 23 bucks shipped. This has 350 lumens and I just tried it out. To say it blew me away would be an understatement. It has 3 brightness modes so it doesn't always have to be blinding but one of the best things is that sometimes headlamps suffer from a bit of tunnel vision and this one throws a wide arc of light. Holy **** this thing is a game changer as far as I'm concerned.
