I made one once for the axle in an S-10. Just a piece of flat bar, lets say 1/4" thick for lack of a better recollection probably about 24" long. Actually I think I welded a square plate to something like a 1/4" x 1" handle.
Transferred the 4 holes, welded a fine thread nut, turned a point on a Grade 5 hex head, glob of anti-seize and I was off. The long handle helped me resist the torque of loosening the nut so the truck didn't run me over

Was also useful when reinstalling it.
I ran over a plastic grocery bag on the freeway and it got wound around the pinion shaft, the thing had probably stretched out to about 1/4 mile long....I was simply amazed at how many "wraps of plastic" had gotten in and gotten hot and melted to the pinion seal and ripped it out. I try to dodge those stupid bags as much as possible.....
