Record No 6 Vise - Need Some Help

I have a Record (Made in England) No 6 vise that I’m working to get back into action.

Here’s the issue - at some point in its life, someone used a few welding tacks in place of the retaining pin in the main screw. I carefully ground these tacks to disassemble the vise, however, the original retaining pin hole is still filled. The spring and retaining washer are also shot. Otherwise, the vise is in good shape.

So, what are my options? Could I use some sort of collar to retain the spring? Should I try to re-drill the main screw? Or should I just look to by a new main screw, spring, etc. any mods I could use to avoid the spring all together?

Also, any tips for a US based supplier to f parts?

Thanks!

sure thing. A pic before with the messed up spring (tack welds underneath), two of the main body, and the last ones are the main screw after I removed the tack welds. Thanks!IMG_2853.jpegIMG_2850.jpeg

I would just drill another hole through it at 90° to where the original was, use a roll pin for the pin and find whatever compression spring you can find that is about the correct size.
None of it is particularly critical.
It will make the spindle slightly weaker but these are designed so that the handle bends long before anything else fails.

This is how mine is retained.

When I owned my Paramo No. 6 (copy of Record No. 6) I was having issues with the spindle galling up on the dynamic jaw. I opted to add a roller thrust bearing which solved the issue and made the vise extremely smooth to operate. I got the idea from Jziggy and emulated his version.

I like that idea - was that in addition to the spring or as a replacement with some sort in f retaining collar?

I used the spring but drilled a new hole for the roll pin as I thought the spring was too tight. A collar makes more sense in your case.

I know I posted about this within the last 10 years, the question is where?? LOL

I would recommend a thrust washer under the head of the screw. Inside the dynamic jaw put a couple large wave washers, plain washers as needed for spacers, and then a shaft collar. Then you can adjust the tension easily, and no hole needed.

just wanted to say thank you all for the help. I wound up going with a collar instead of drilling a new hole. This allows me to moere easily adjust the spring tension. Got her all back together and mounted today!

Good work! That’s an awesome tool you have there.

These No.6’s are going for between 300-400 in my area on CL, with or without the swivel base.

The inner support rings are of poor design ( ask JZiggy and I how we know😎) and you are better off running it as a fixed base as you have.

Stay safe!

A mint English made one might reach the equivalent of about $200 in the UK, without a Swivel base which you really hardly ever see here. They can be bought much much cheaper.
But Records probably represent over 50% of all decent vices you will find on the used market and vices are mostly cheap here, like the nice 6" Reed on Swivel base I bought for £25 a few years ago.

Very interesting DG! Of course, these sellers can ask as high as they please, but there’s always the negotiating factor…definitely a quality tool!
