Record vise quality?

Does anyone know if Record 6" replacement jaws will fit a Paramo 6"?

ISTR that that is the case , however I once fitted some new jaws to an old record vice. It was a older vice and the jaw securing bolts on longer vices are with a much longer hex. head length - I think later ones use a common commercial bolt. I had to ease the holes just slightly to get the bolts & jaws to float - I just put this down to manuf. tolerances years apart.

The problem is that unless you are lucky with some NOS jaws - the asking price for new is exhorbitant (as is the price for new Irvin vices) , cheaper to get another good used vice - keep the old one for blacksmithing jobs :bounce:

My Record stuff...

A tiny No. 11 anvil, a No. 5 vise, a smaller No. 100 vise that lives on my truck (bolted to a piece of 2"x10" for on-the-road deployment) and 24oz. and 16oz. ball-peens from the Bahco Record Marples era...

Your tiny Record No. 11 anvil beats mine by quite a bit!

I have a small modern record, not sure what model and its OK, its probably about 15 years old. My grandfather had a massive old record vise with the quick release in his shed. I'm keeping my eyes open for a cheap large old one as they do appear now and then.

OK, so I rebuilt this one, and replaced the smashed spring on the screw, and it's working a whole lot better now... (For anyone familiar, I used a Fox Racing MTB top-out spring! Worked like a charm.) I think it's mostly ham-fisted user error that has trashed most the Records I've seen and used.

On a side note, I also got this Gray Canada vise this week. It's identical to the Record no. 3, but with no COO. Must be Chinese? It works well enough, but time will tell...

I LOVE that little Record dog. Anyone ever wants to get rid of one, I'm interested!

I don't think there was a Paramo Hi-Duty 5
Paramo did produce a Hi-Duty No. 5. See here.

They also produced a Hi-Duty No. 6. There is one is currently for sale on eBay at an outrageous price.

I'm always on the lookout for Paramo stuff. I currently have their Hi-Duty No. 1, 2 & 4 vices, a No. 61 woodworking vice and a nice 4" C-clamp.

Every Sheffield-made Record vise I've ever seen has been absolutely kicked. Is this because they've been abused, or because they're sort of middle-of-the-road quality?

The old Sheffield ones, as mentioned by others, definitely weren't of shonky build. The old Record's are to be found in pretty much any garage/workshop, and they do get some stick.

That Paramo No. 6 at about $450 is pretty steep. I bought a very serviceable Record No. 6 which is essentially the same vice a few years ago for $75 and a No. 8 in not quite as nice shape for $80.

They are probably the most common vice used in shops here too.

PC: do any of your Records have the quick release? it might not be durable for commercial use, but very nice feature if you ask me. by the way guys just like US vises are rare in your countries the Record and old English made vises don't come up often down here in the US so fetch a few dollars when one surfaces for sale.

any information on when the old English made Records started making that quick release because those are keepers? I still kick myself that I sold mine but it looked like an import next to my big US vises.

drivesitfar - The only Record vice I have with the quick release feature is my No. 52 wood vice. I don't currently have it mounted to a bench but I have used one like it and it's a nice feature. There have been a few quick release bench vices posted on here and I think they would be nice to have.

I can't honestly think of any of the large old vices I've seen which haven't had quick release. The smaller vices it was rarely, if ever, incorporated, but with the larger vices it seemed to be pretty much standard, and judging by the amount of them still in good working condition, it was of ample robustness for production/commercial work. There's far less wear on a screw & nut when quick release is incorporated and used.

They were quite well liked over your way as well then. If you're owt like me, it's practically the first thing you look for in a workplace, the type of vice they have. :D I do it instinctively without generally even realising it, but pound to a penny, chances are it's a Record.

Here's the 6 inch Record that went out the door with a 150 pound Peter Wright anvil last month. still thinking I should have kept it even if it sat under the bench until I needed it.

I loved the quick release and good to know there are several old English vises that had that action so maybe I can find another some day.

I own a few Records, 1, 3, 4, 5. All bought off kijiji and all in great shape.

If you cannot find jaws, the Gray tool vice jaws fit the Records, the swivel bases do as well, I have mounted my 5 and 4 on Gray swivel bases, great upgrade to them.

I've never felt the need for a swivel base but that's good to know. I have Nos. 1, 3, 4, 6 & 8. I'll start scrounging.

Hi folks

1st post for me - So hi!

Anyway, I just picked up a Record 83. Looking at the top of this thread it preceeded the 84 and was then obsoleted.

Anyone have any idea how old it is (roughly?) - After rubbing off the rust, I think it seemed to be a light blue color over the top of a darker blue base colour.

Anyway, I have got it all apart and will be cleaning it up and painting it over the next couple of days if anyone is interested in pictures?

Thanks

Outrigger, where does the Paramo No. 6 vice land? Is it steel or something else? I have one with a swivel base, and always wondered were it would rank against a Record. I never realized Record made so many different classes of vice.

How about a Woden 186-b/1 Fixed base? (3" wide jaw)

Bit late to the ball with this reply, :D but just thought I'd post this. An old snippet from a Woden ad which I found online somewhere, (can't remember where for the life of me). Has some basic info on the Woden B series vices.

I have the Record 52-1/2 w/ quick release on my woodworking bench and it's been a excellent tool. It's a England made item, purchased for 1/2 price back in the early 90's from a big block store that went out of business.

I added a 6" swivel to the family a while back. My original 6" was stolen years ago when I was working in camp and I've always wanted another one. You can see my chinese fake I've been substituting with for the last 15 years beside it.

I gotta say the fake has stood up pretty well but in the side by side comparison, well, there is no comparison. The record is smooth as silk and the biggest improvement is the ease of which the swivel tightens and adjusts. It used to be an ordeal to swivel the fake but the record is effortless.

I guess that is due to the machined swivel mechanism compared to the plain casting on the chinese fake. The fake took a lot of effort to loosen the locks or to tighten them down. I always had to use a box end wrench or other cheater on the lock pins just to get it locked or unlocked. I hated having to use the swivel feature because of it. I'm real happy to have the record. The hinged lock bars require very little twist to positively lock or unlock the swivel. Love it!

Yesterday I picked up a little 4" swivel, this VS3. It doesn't have a pivoting swivel lock bar like the 6" which I'll miss but it seems like a nice little vise.

It looks like a newer version of some of the older combination vises I've seen here.

There is some similarity between our VS3's and drivesitfar's 6" SQ in post #65. The VS3 has bevels on the side and back of the anvil and the jaw.

here's a R40S that I own and it might have a new home in Florida soon so thought i'd post a picture. this one doesn't have a quick release feature.

also with the back piece on it i can't screw out the dynamic jaw all the way. do i need to knock the pin(s) out that are holding the vise nut in to get the dynamic jaw out? interesting design and a very solid vice.

I bought this at a flea market today and Google was of no help on the "6VS".

Anyone know what model this is? I assume 6VS but being unable to find anything like it I am curious.

I found a 23C9 and a 5C9 stampeding on it, is it an Irwin? Any thoughts on year of manufacture?
