Record Vise Restoration

Recently restored this Record No. 5 vise. I couldn’t for the life of me order the correct Roundel Blue from the UK so I went down to the local tool store and found a close match. The paint used is actually an enamel pinstriping paint (see photo). I also somewhat restored the original decal.

I carefully peeled it off, washed it and got all the old glue residue off with my fingers. The decal is actually a very good quality thick vinyl so it can take the abuse. Then I just spray glued it on (3M Super 77). I had to restore part of the gold border by cutting out some gold print off an old gift bag. I then covered the decal with some clear vinyl film and used a heat gun so it sticks better (just an extra precaution to protect the original decal).

I just used a cheap small paint brush. This paint levels and hides brush strokes beautifully.

Nice. You definitely put in more effort into getting something that's close to roundel blue than I did when I cleaned up and repainted my Record 34P.

Nice job! Well worth the effort.

The original colour was actually ‘Roundel Blue’. It’s a British Standard (BS381) colour. (The same shade used on aircraft roundel’s, hence the name)

I don’t know what facilities you have ‘over the pond’ but here in the U.K. I can take the BS name or number and get paint mixed while I wait. They can do the same with a Pantone number.

The blue you used looks very close. If we’re being honest, the exact shade if blue changed over the years anyway. Most restorers take more care about this than Record did!

Nice work on the vice although it looked like it was in far better shape than my #5

I'm no expert but that looks like a much newer casting than mine, perhaps it was made just after Irwin bought them but before the move to China manufacturing. Note the mounting holes in the base on my old Record.

Wow that one needs some love! Haha.

Yes I believe mine is a later production vice. Still very strong and made in England. Heavy too....i’d say around 70 lbs.
