RG: what would you normally clean up stuff with? WD 40, Simple green or do you have a favorite? use it then dry it off and then buy some BLO (boiled linseed oil) if you don't own any and wipe it on the vise everywhere. if you have a warm garage or your daytime weather is above 60 it helps dry the BLO a bit quicker. some guys actually bake the BLO on in a shop oven or smoker, but i heard its got quite a smell. if you do bake it on i might be able to see the glow on it up here in SEATTLE.

WELL DONE!!

if you ever want to trade for something i might have and you are coming to SEATTLE bring your 3C and i'll have a cold beer or some homemade ice tea while we arm wrestle over a trade.

cheers

Thanks for the invite. I was going to use Johnsons Paste Wax but I see that there is a better way. Thanks for the advice. I am a huge fan of cold beer.

RG: some guys use JOHNSON PASTE WAX and just know that if you do you'll need to apply maybe a bit more often than BLO to keep surface rust at bay.

cheers

Thanks everyone. I was planning on using Simple Green but I have never done a vise. Is that the preferred cleaner? This Reed is pretty heavy. I wouldn't want to have to do much more than walk across a level room with it.

I'll just offer a thought, if I may........if a person has an oven, which can be located down-wind of one's home or work environment, and would like a nice finish, how about doing traditional 'japanning'?

I say down-wind, as the smell of the stuff baking is 'not nice', to put it mildly, but that technique is the most aesthetically nice and the most durable finish for tooling and for metal parts generally. (the old Stanley hand planes are a good common example)

One can find the recipe for the material on the internet, in the model T Ford restorers' area, as they duplicate the original japan finish used on some of the Ford parts.

cheers

RG: Simple green should work just fine. make sure it's dry after you get done cleaning it. by either wiping it down good or maybe using a little heat gun before putting on wax, BLO or some other product. from my chair your Reed 3c just needs a little cleaning and maybe some new grease on the screw. some grease or oil on the slide and swivel where you have metal to metal moving parts and maybe repeat again in a year or so depending on the use and condition in your shop.

NICE FIND. did you have some idea how big the Reed 3c was before starting this thread or how many members wish they owned one?

cheers and again welcome to GJ

BTW the split nut sometimes needs a little more than coaxing if you want to remove it and the main screw and some of us spray in Kroil and let it sit for a few days before taking the split nut out. or since you are not painting your vise and don't need to take it all apart just leaving it as is should be ok too. if you aren't sure what we are talking about when I (we) are talking about the split nut just ask or go to the Vise Repair 101 thread and there should be plenty of pictures of a split nut on that thread.

Thanks Carla but I don't think this will fit in my 18" wide smoker and if I used my oven in the house SWMBO would be really upset.

Thanks for the info. I will prolly completely disassemble it and give a good cleaning. Yes, I had an idea of the weight.

I hear you brother

Simple green and a small brass brush works well for me. Heat gun to dry it thoroughly and rub on the BLO.
I often wish I had more space around here with my barely a quarter acre city lot and 20x20 garage. Many times I see second hand kitchen stoves on the free list but don't have the room.:(

I'll check when I start the cleaning process. I work Thursday-Sunday evenings right now so I won't touch it until next week.

Simple Green will work well, but it can remove paint if you leave it on too long (like hours).

A bronze wire wheel works really well on spindles/handles/swivel locks/etc. It won't remove any metal, but will get right through rust and will bring bare metal to a nice matte finish very quickly. I actually use one to clean the serrations/teeth on jaws...gets right in between and cleans them nicely. The great thing is that when you hit your hand/fingers on it you usually don't lose any skin like with a steel wire wheel. :D

The guy I got the Read 3C from just texted me that he's looking to sell a second vise he showed me in his garage. I told him to send pics today when he gets a chance. I'll post them up in the main vise thread. It looked like it was from the turn of the century. I only got a quick look at it and couldn't tell the manufacturer. Looked like there was a patent date of 18XX.

RG: i'm not sure what happened to my post of my REED 4C that has BLO (boiled linseed oil) on it, but here's the before and after pics again so you can sort of see what 2 or 3 coats of BLO on a naked vise looks like. i actually just wiped off my REED 2C and put BLO over the paint like you are thinking of doing so here's a picture of my 2C too with BLO on it's original paint.

there are maybe more than a few vises with 1800's patent dates on them, but the most popular ones sold were PARKER so looking forward to your next find. sounds like you might be on another road trip again real soon.

Thanks, that is the look I'd like. He said he was kicking himself in the head that he didn't offer to sell the second vise when I asked to look at it. I think I'll take the VW TDI this time so I only spend $6 on fuel.

Good plan...I wish I had something more fuel efficient than my truck to go pick up vises!

RG: i think i also need one of those cars that costs $6 for two hour drive. i'd be able to buy more TOOLS.

if you want to post pictures of the other vise before you head out to get a little information just post them on this thread since it's already got a few of us looking at it if you have time.

good luck and just a little warning BUYING OLD VISES AND TOOLS is sorta like drinking it feels good and can be addictive. BEE CAREFUL or just know you might not have another $100 bill in your wallet not already spent on some tool finds.

cheers

The problem with those cars that cost $6 for a two hour drive is, as soon as you put a 3C in the trunk it now costs $15 just to get home.

Thanks. I'm going to pass on it. That was a 5 hour round trip for a fun score. I appreciate your advice. What's a ballpark number to give him as a favor for a quick Craigs sale if you don't mind? He was a pleasant guy to deal with.
