If that's the original paint, I'd leave it as is, maybe remove the rust.

RG: what would you normally clean up stuff with? WD 40, Simple green or do you have a favorite? use it then dry it off and then buy some BLO (boiled linseed oil) if you don't own any and wipe it on the vise everywhere. if you have a warm garage or your daytime weather is above 60 it helps dry the BLO a bit quicker. some guys actually bake the BLO on in a shop oven or smoker, but i heard its got quite a smell. if you do bake it on i might be able to see the glow on it up here in SEATTLE.
WELL DONE!!
if you ever want to trade for something i might have and you are coming to SEATTLE bring your 3C and i'll have a cold beer or some homemade ice tea while we arm wrestle over a trade.
cheers
Got it!!

I'll just offer a thought, if I may........if a person has an oven, which can be located down-wind of one's home or work environment, and would like a nice finish, how about doing traditional 'japanning'?
RG: Simple green should work just fine. make sure it's dry after you get done cleaning it. by either wiping it down good or maybe using a little heat gun before putting on wax, BLO or some other product. from my chair your Reed 3c just needs a little cleaning and maybe some new grease on the screw. some grease or oil on the slide and swivel where you have metal to metal moving parts and maybe repeat again in a year or so depending on the use and condition in your shop.
NICE FIND. did you have some idea how big the Reed 3c was before starting this thread or how many members wish they owned one?
cheers and again welcome to GJ.
Thanks Carla but I don't think this will fit in my 18" wide smoker and if I used my oven in the house SWMBO would be really upset.
Hey guy,do you need any parts for your 3C vise? I have a friend thats trying to sell alot of 3C parts if your interested.
Yes let me know. My friend has an entire 3C except for the static body. Hes selling the rest of it as parts. Very nice parts as well.
Thanks, but I meant of the static body.
As stated before the static body is not available.
I know, I just wanted to see if it was broken or not, and if so, how.
Its gone. It was lost in shipping
Thanks everyone. I was planning on using Simple Green but I have never done a vise. Is that the preferred cleaner? This Reed is pretty heavy. I wouldn't want to have to do much more than walk across a level room with it.
Simple Green will work well, but it can remove paint if you leave it on too long (like hours).
A bronze wire wheel works really well on spindles/handles/swivel locks/etc. It won't remove any metal, but will get right through rust and will bring bare metal to a nice matte finish very quickly. I actually use one to clean the serrations/teeth on jaws...gets right in between and cleans them nicely. The great thing is that when you hit your hand/fingers on it you usually don't lose any skin like with a steel wire wheel.![]()
RG: i'm not sure what happened to my post of my REED 4C that has BLO (boiled linseed oil) on it, but here's the before and after pics again so you can sort of see what 2 or 3 coats of BLO on a naked vise looks like. i actually just wiped off my REED 2C and put BLO over the paint like you are thinking of doing so here's a picture of my 2C too with BLO on it's original paint.
there are maybe more than a few vises with 1800's patent dates on them, but the most popular ones sold were PARKER so looking forward to your next find. sounds like you might be on another road trip again real soon.
Thanks, that is the look I'd like. He said he was kicking himself in the head that he didn't offer to sell the second vise when I asked to look at it. I think I'll take the VW TDI this time so I only spend $6 on fuel.

RG:
if you want to post pictures of the other vise before you head out to get a little information just post them on this thread since it's already got a few of us looking at it if you have time.
good luck and just a little warning BUYING OLD VISES AND TOOLS is sorta like drinking it feels good and can be addictive. BEE CAREFUL or just know you might not have another $100 bill in your wallet not already spent on some tool finds.
cheers
RG: i wouldn't pay that much for one of those unless you REALLY LIKE IT. i've got a few and they are light to maybe medium duty. they look interesting though.
your call and not a nearly as nice a deal as your Reed 3C.
