Reed 403 1/2 A

Hey folks,

Question regarding my Reed 403 1/2 A.
Unfortunately it’s missing the tapered steel pin for the swivel jaw, and I was wondering if anyone knew of a source where I could find one, or anyone has made these on a lathe?

Other than that, does anyone know original paint colors for these?

Not sure where to get one, but it would be an easy thing to make on a lathe with a taper attachment, and not hard to make on a lathe without one. Were those hardened? I've seen them in videos, but never seen one in person.

Thank you for your reply Dave. I’ll plan on making one then, and like you said it shouldn’t be too much of an issue. I’ll take a couple measurements with a caliper of the top and bottom diameter of the hole so I’ll know the correct taper.

By chance would anyone be kind enough to take a few pictures and measurements of their pin and post them up?

According to another thread, your vise might need a 6 degree pin. Maybe a place to start anyway.

It's not that hard to figure out the angle, here I drew a cutaway of a swivel jaw with the trig formula. This one is a example for a Prentiss, the Reeds are different and I added a drawing of the ones I built before. I am retired now and not making vise parts any more but maybe this will help. Kevin

Dont worry, even though there are huge, thousand post threads on vises in general, and if you search vise you see them on google............but lets just start a thread in vintage that gets 2 replies. It happens a lot, guessing people just arent good at searching or have poor reading comprehension skills.

Ya know what? You're right, some people just aren't good at searching. Some people don't know how to search. Some people are just too lazy to search. Oh well. Let them ask their question. A forum isn't an encyclopedia. It's a place for discussion. If only new, never asked before questions were asked, there would be almost no new activity on this or most other forums. Don't want to answer it? Then skip past it.

Thanks for the warm welcome to the forum. Btw, I did search before I wrote my post and couldn’t find anything regarding the part I need. As far as the two “mega threads”, I searched there too, but couldn’t find anything related to what I need, and right now I just don’t have the time to read through a novel.

Being a first responder just outside Manhattan, I’ve been “kinda” busy the past couple months, besides worrying about my elderly sick mother who recently lost her husband of 60 years (oh, and I can’t even go see my mom due to the fact I need to isolate myself in case I caught something on the job).

So, do me a big favor, if you ever see another post by me on this forum, don’t respond to it, and I’ll be sure to return the favor.

I don't know why there's this sudden surge in people complaining about people asking questions. It's a big reason for leaving or avoiding other groups. It's like joining a FB group about bad drivers and then complaining when somebody posts something about bad drivers. Y'all need to get over yourself!

Thanks Dave, I certainly appreciate the kind comments and help to a “newbie”. Like yourself, I totally don’t understand why someone would rather ***** instead of taking that same amount of time to actually try to help someone. Oh well, it’s a big world and takes all types I guess.

I’m still crazy busy on the job otherwise I would have gotten back sooner. Luckily I’m staying healthy and haven’t caught anything at work. As soon as things calm down a bit I’ll have more off-duty time to devote to restoring my dad’s old vises.
