Reed 403-1/2 stand

I've had this very clean vise bolted to a taco cart for a number of years and it always seems to be in the way.
So a new stand is in order.
Starting with a 19-1/2 dia x 1" bottom plate, 11"dia x 3/8" top plate and 40' of 5/8" round bar.
It is laid out for 12ea 5/8" spokes, acting as the column
After laying it out, figuring all the spoke lengths and angles, it feels like it might not be rigid enough.
Think I'll try alternating directions on the spokes and see what that looks and feels like.

It would be super cool if your spokes were made out of cable. Then have something in the middle to resist the tension of the cables.....

Re-sketched it with crossed spokes.
Not sure I can visualize what all the effect atheistically it may have, but it should be stiffer anyhow.

Cut some legs from some 2"boiler tube, which gets the footprint up to 23-1/2" which is good for stability.

I make these simple stands. I have them under grinders and polishers. These stands work well. If I were going to use one of these stands under a vice, I would use heavier tube. A heavier plate under the vice should give additional stability. This design allow me to put a foot on the front cross-bar,

It does look a bit like a fish trap, maybe a tail walking trout is in order!

Got the spokes tacked together and plug welded to the plates.
Also added a sprocket for counterweight and a couple of spacers for garnish.

It is surprisingly rigid, I would not think twice about putting up to a 4-1/2" vise on it.

Architecturally, it misses the mark to my eye, but that's alright.
Think I'll remove the spacer rings on the sprocket.
In the end it is fine for this 3-1/2" reed.

After studying this stand a bit more, I've opted to put a 24" tabletop on it.
3/4"marine ply with a doubled and beveled edge.
Hopefully it enhances function and overall appearance.

Started out when I was 15 in a old blacksmith shop that had evolved into a fabrication and machine shop then moved to uranium and gold mining, then pipeline welding, then mechanical welding and fabrication.

Wow, this Mike Cooper guy, never heard of him before and I'm from Lodi. Talk about head shaking, jaw dropping next level stuff. I'm still in awe. Like the ultimate marriage of technology and art. I may have to buy his book. Thanks for the link.
