I found this 26” tool chest on Craigslist 3 months ago, and FINALLY finished the resto this past weekend.
The day I bought it…super greasy, dented and the keys are missing.

I found and modified desk drawer locks to fit from Home Depot and started the process of cleaning and degreasing everything.

The drawers were dented, so I spent a lot of “quality time” with a hammer & dolly. I was able to get most of the dents out, and at least presentable. Here are a few stacked, ready for the blast cabinet.

The first few drawers took awhile to blast. However, after I got in the groove it went smoothly.

I spray painted the drawers gray, and used Hammerite Silver on the drawer faces. The Hammerite is great paint, but it does take a long time to dry. A short nap roller was used to apply the paint.

Since the base cabinet won’t fit in the sandblasting cabinet, I used a DA sander to prep the base & got ready to spray….

After spraying the Light Blue Hammerite, I found that getting the finish to be consistent was nearly impossible. So I scuffed the blue & rolled the Hammerite with a short nap roller. This seemed to do the trick.
One thing I hate about these types of base cabinets is the wasted space at the bottom. Why couldn’t they have put another drawer in there?? I know a “normal” person would use that area to store large items like saws & stuff, but I’m not normal & I want another drawer! After some head scratching and a few measurements I called my Dad the woodworker. He built a drawer, (dovetailed of course), and I added a ¾” angle iron drawer bottom for support and installed full extension ball bearing slides.

I needed to replicate another drawer handle to match, so I fabbed one out of ¼” steel rod & painted to match.

The drawer depth was decreased so the lower metal “flap” could be closed and locked

When the “flap” is opened, (also the metal “flap” unlocks all the drawers above it) I pull the new drawer out 2 inches to have all the drawer faces aligned.

So there it is! I added new drawer liner and I’m starting to load ‘er up with tools.
Now it’s almost time to start the rebuild on my Snap-On KRA-41 series top & bottom boxes.
Any & all comments (good and bad!) are greatly appreciated.

I've got a remline that I'm planning on painting soon.....it's a little older, but I like your color scheme. It should be an easy keeper. And I was thinking of adding a drawer or two like you, but I think I'll make mine out of sheet metal.

Great work, btw.

Hey everyone,

I'm new to the site and look forward to picking some garage veteran brains. So I found this toolbox on the side of the road with a sign that said "Free" on it so I made my cousin drive back with his work truck so we could grab it. There were some funky old tools still in it as well so it wasn't lite. While researching the box I found the site with a few guys that have restoed a few boxes. It's a Remline roller. I plan on cleaning it first but I like the idea of using that hammerlite paint for a fresh look. Any thoughts? Once I figure out how to post a pic using my crappy laptop I will.

I have seen the Remline with all drawers once and liked it. guy wouldnt sell it.

I have an old Remline I restored over 25 years ago. it looks like *** now but it will be restored again and given to my son.
Back in the day I had no problem getting a nice hammer finish with spray equipment.

I'm with you on drawers instead of that junk attractant at the bottom. The only explanation is it's less expensive than another drawer. I've got a couple of older Snap-on roller cabs and the same model with drawers always cost more.

That it was a bad idea is proven by most current roller cabs are full-drawer models.

Hey all,

Sorry it took me a bit to get back here. I put a pic on photo bucket. So what steps do I need to take to get this thing looking good? I just planned to strip and clean if first, then do some metal repairs, prime then paint. Any suggestions for my process? I still can't believe someone gave this away with tools in it. Any tips are welcome, this will be my first resto on anything.

Nice job. It's alot of work, but I always find it enjoyable and the rewards awesome. Gonna save that drawer idea too. What made you go with that paint scheme and not keep it original colors?

I attempted to clean and strip the top of the tool box today with acetone and it was too weak. I understand that aircraft stripper is the best but then what steps to I take with the bare metal? There is a little surface rust and some small dents. I planned on trying a SOS pad for the rust and filler for the dents. Any suggestions? I also have two holes to fix on one side where a rail was ripped out. How do I flatten those holes and fill them without a welder? I also plan to just bedline the insides of the drawers when I have them stripped, has anyone tried this before?

DesertRat1973 I know you are exited about your find. But now it is time for you to start your own thread and ask away in there. There will be lots of input, I promise.

If total restoration seems too much as painting is tricky for a first timer generally try IMHO extensively reconditioning it. I'd degrease, de-rust(w/white vinegar or evapo-rust), rubbing compound it, polish it out, then wax, & line the drawers=enough work I'd say. Should look great afterwards. Just my $0.02.

Enjoy the chest & tools, nice find!

Happy Trails!

Wow that turned out nice! I just recently sprayed some hammerite on a midbox. It turned out pretty streaky. Looks like yours turned out pretty good. I dig the colors you picked.
