I found this 26” tool chest on Craigslist 3 months ago, and FINALLY finished the resto this past weekend.
The day I bought it…super greasy, dented and the keys are missing.
I found and modified desk drawer locks to fit from Home Depot and started the process of cleaning and degreasing everything.
The drawers were dented, so I spent a lot of “quality time” with a hammer & dolly. I was able to get most of the dents out, and at least presentable. Here are a few stacked, ready for the blast cabinet.
The first few drawers took awhile to blast. However, after I got in the groove it went smoothly.
I spray painted the drawers gray, and used Hammerite Silver on the drawer faces. The Hammerite is great paint, but it does take a long time to dry. A short nap roller was used to apply the paint.
Since the base cabinet won’t fit in the sandblasting cabinet, I used a DA sander to prep the base & got ready to spray….
After spraying the Light Blue Hammerite, I found that getting the finish to be consistent was nearly impossible. So I scuffed the blue & rolled the Hammerite with a short nap roller. This seemed to do the trick.
One thing I hate about these types of base cabinets is the wasted space at the bottom. Why couldn’t they have put another drawer in there?? I know a “normal” person would use that area to store large items like saws & stuff, but I’m not normal & I want another drawer! After some head scratching and a few measurements I called my Dad the woodworker. He built a drawer, (dovetailed of course), and I added a ¾” angle iron drawer bottom for support and installed full extension ball bearing slides.
I needed to replicate another drawer handle to match, so I fabbed one out of ¼” steel rod & painted to match.
The drawer depth was decreased so the lower metal “flap” could be closed and locked
When the “flap” is opened, (also the metal “flap” unlocks all the drawers above it) I pull the new drawer out 2 inches to have all the drawer faces aligned.
So there it is! I added new drawer liner and I’m starting to load ‘er up with tools.
Now it’s almost time to start the rebuild on my Snap-On KRA-41 series top & bottom boxes.
Any & all comments (good and bad!) are greatly appreciated.
