Removal help

Hello-

I am seeking suggestions on how to remove the step bit from my hex drill. It's a harbor freight step bit that I can remove from the drill. The removal collar slides forward as designed but the bit will not come out, it's stuck in there. The hex portion on the bit was not mangaled when I inserted in there, but after I used it to drill a hole it won't come out. I've tried to pull but no go. I've contemplated cutting off the bit to leave the shank and place that in the vise to pull really hard in hopes it comes out.

Has anyone else ran into a similar problem and if so what was your solution to remove it? is there something simple I am not seeing?

This happens a lot with impact drivers. Lock the shank in a vise (in your case, a wrench) and briefly hit it in reverse. This should free it up.

Shot of WD-40. Then lock the bit in a vise. Forward and reverse a few times.
If that doesn't work, hold the collar back and tap the end of the bit with a small hammer. It might pop free.

I would try hammering the bit back in and see if it loosens up.

I just whack the bit on the ground and it pops loose.

Same thing happens with small bit drivers once the holders get a little worn.

And I hate to ask, but what are you drilling that it has coated that bit with so much goo? Looks like tar.

The backward rotation should do wonders for removing it.

Looks like plastic or rubber to me

I stuck the bit in the vise and went forward then reverse and the bit came out. The black stuff is the sticky backing for sound deadner on my chevelle. I had a to drill a drain hole for the new AC install and the interior of the vehicle is coated in sound deadner. I soaked the bit in gas for a little while and it came off.

Impact drivers are hard on unibits and drills in general. I still break that rule often, but its always crude. Better off grabbing a drill when possible.
