Recently picked up a 40" Craftsman top box and began cleaning it up today. Previous owner had placed masking tape on the front of the dawers to identify tools inside each drawer. Tape had been there so long it had turned yellow. Removing the tape left a residue I am having a difficult trying to take off without tearing the paint up.
Anyone with suggestions on how to get the residue off?

I've had pretty good luck with Simple Green. It takes a while and some good scrubbing, but doesn't mess with the paint at all.

Another good one is Purple Power, but don't use it full strength, and be sure to wash it all off because I think it can mess with paint after a while.

Zippo lighter fluid.
NO don't light it!!!!!
Seriously, it takes the gummy crud right off. A little on a paper towel.
But try it on the inside of the drawer to see if it bothers the paint.

Xylol, available at most hardware stores works very well. But as with all chemicals test it on an incospicous area first to make sure it wont damage the paint.

My go-to adhesive remover is Goof-off (which is basically Xylene and Ethylbenzene)

Don't use brake cleaner. I tried it on my old Craftsman and it took the paint off. I think it has acetone in it.

all the pro's on here and nobody told him to use the right tool for the job.

What you need is a 3M eraser wheel, it'll clean all the gunk right off and leave your finish completely unharmed

Dont use too much pressure, its not the force that makes that thing work

the guy does NOT need a $20 eraser wheel to remove 5 cents worth of tape ... lighter fluid or wd-40 will work. and cheaper.
