I have a Craftsman 103.0303 Drill that needs the power cord replaced and the
cord that goes to the toggle switch replaced. Does anybody know what the gauge of the wire that is needed for this drill press? I want to convert it to a three prong plug?

Where will you add the ground connection?
There is usually some place on the motor frame for a ground connection. You are protecting against a short from the live circuitry inside the motor making the drill press "hot". The ground should be as close to that electrically hot wiring as possible. You ground the motor.

I used 16/3 wire and mounted the ground
Wire to a bolt on the side of the DP that
holds the black and white wires that go
from the toggle switch to the motor.
When I plugged it in I saw a spark in the
wall socket and heard a click. Then there
was no power in the wall socket. Looks like
I failed basic electricity.

If you give up your top secret location maybe someone close by could walk you thru it. If not, post some pics, and I'm sure we could tell you how to get it squared away.

I’ve installed new three prong power cords on a LOT of these older Craftsman motors and they can be a pain to deal with sometimes because of the restricted space you have to work with due to the flat start capacitors. If the motor is 3/4 hp or less you should be fine using 16 gage wire. If you can post up a few photos of your handy work we might be able to identify what the problem is. Be sure to post clear photos of the electrical connections that you made.
