Replacing a Jacobs 700 chuck on a Dewalt cordless...

Hi,

My Chuck just seems to be losing it's hold. It seems that every time I take a bit out after use, I always have to take it to the grinder to remove a burr to get it back into the case.

As I look at a stock replacement... I have a series 700 Jacobs on there. A 400 series is coming up as the replacement. I don't know the quality difference. Can I just look for any chuck that is a 1/2 x 20? I assume that i have a 1/2 x 20. (1/2 inch non-hammer drill) I haven't pulled it yet but I will confirm before ordering anything.

I see that some people are moving to a Rohm on other drills? Is that a better quality? I am looking for a good quality chuck.

Thanks,

Mark

You just want 1/2-20 with a thru-hole for anchor screw, yes. Some for machine tools won't have the hole, but they're generally longer, too.

I'd probably go Rohm but Jacobs makes some good stuff and some not-so-good. I'm not familiar w the models you mention. I thought most DeWalt already came with Rohm, but apparently not

Higher end cordless drill chucks don’t always have the thru hole and require thread locker, because the design won’t function with a thru hole.
This includes the top on the line Rohm Supra SK keyless drill chucks, and the Metabo Futuro Top keyless drill chucks.
The mid range all steel Rohm and Metabo chucks do have the thru hole.
I usually prefer chucks designed for hammer drills.

I did finally get around to attempting to remove my chuck. It is clock-wise to loosen torx head screw. As I expected, I attempted to loosen it and broke the bit. (stuck in the screw-head)

I think that I can dig the bit out, but my question is, how do I loosen this thing? I did hold the wrench steady and pulled the trigger on the drill. (as I saw done in countless videos)

I guess that I can pull out my grinder and cut the chuck off, if necessary.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Mark
