I found a guy on Craigslist selling old wooden windows with multiple glass panes. I've been wanting to try to repurpose something like this for a while so I picked them up and sized them up for what I wanted to do with them. The two lower sashes I decided to turn into picture frames.
Each sash had six individual panes that are 9" x 7.75". Nice sized photos. 8 x 10's cut down will fit in there. So I started to build them out. The first round didn't work out quite as I planned as I trimmed them out with molding that was too large. So after ripping the new molding off and trying something different, I had this:
It's the old window with some base molding turned upside down, a piece of dentil trim molding for an accent, a 1 x 4 with routed edges for the top and some small crown molding to give it some style.
Now that the structure was built up, I sanded it down, filled all the nail holes and applied some paint to it. Just a base white with a slight tint of cream. This made the entire piece look as though it was one unit and not a mix of parts....
To weather it I then scuffed it with some 100 grit sandpaper down to the wood in places, just scuffing it in others. Random spots that would be consistent with wear. Now that it was sanded and weathered I took some medium dark colored stain and brushed it on over the paint. With a rag I then wiped off the stain I didn't want leaving the rest to darken the bare spots and settle into the cracks, nicks and gouges. At this point I had what I was looking for:
This evening I routed out two keyhole slots on the back to hang it and drilled 12 holes so that I could insert thin metal rods in the back to hold the pictures in place with a little cardboard padding.
My wife gets one and my daughter gets the other on Valentine's Day.
