Repurposed old windows

I found a guy on Craigslist selling old wooden windows with multiple glass panes. I've been wanting to try to repurpose something like this for a while so I picked them up and sized them up for what I wanted to do with them. The two lower sashes I decided to turn into picture frames.

Each sash had six individual panes that are 9" x 7.75". Nice sized photos. 8 x 10's cut down will fit in there. So I started to build them out. The first round didn't work out quite as I planned as I trimmed them out with molding that was too large. So after ripping the new molding off and trying something different, I had this:

It's the old window with some base molding turned upside down, a piece of dentil trim molding for an accent, a 1 x 4 with routed edges for the top and some small crown molding to give it some style.

Now that the structure was built up, I sanded it down, filled all the nail holes and applied some paint to it. Just a base white with a slight tint of cream. This made the entire piece look as though it was one unit and not a mix of parts....

To weather it I then scuffed it with some 100 grit sandpaper down to the wood in places, just scuffing it in others. Random spots that would be consistent with wear. Now that it was sanded and weathered I took some medium dark colored stain and brushed it on over the paint. With a rag I then wiped off the stain I didn't want leaving the rest to darken the bare spots and settle into the cracks, nicks and gouges. At this point I had what I was looking for:

This evening I routed out two keyhole slots on the back to hang it and drilled 12 holes so that I could insert thin metal rods in the back to hold the pictures in place with a little cardboard padding.

My wife gets one and my daughter gets the other on Valentine's Day.

Looks good......your moulding "grammar" is close enough.Gotta be careful with that.......

The statement:"Look,I took a 2x4 and used it as a table leg".....,the response:"yeah, looks just like a 2x4".Meaning,you have to be real careful using certain moulds or,in above case a very recognizable item(2x4),in certain design treatments. It'll always look like a F'n 2x4.So,you did a very nice job on the "headpce" on your window.

Got any more windows?Try putting, just the right size.....sill,or ledge on bttm. Then you can run a touch bigger headpce.Next, put mirrors in place of glass......moving right along, under the new "sill"....put a "plain'ish" pce of flatstock and put some nice coat hangars on it.Now put some antique lookin(beat-up and then glazed)finish on the whole thing.Want to sell it?Go find a Yoga studio(target rich environ),ask for owner.BW

Two common uses for old pane windows (or "pain" windows if you have to maintain them) is to fill the panes with stained glass or a bit easier, replace the glass with mirror. Makes a nice thing for the ladies.

Not sure what you mean by my moulding grammar? Pretty sure I described everything pretty accurately?

The glass is in place because there will be photographs behind the glass. I didn't take a picture of it with the rods and backer board in place to hold them.

great idea. I saved some similar windows for a craft project, but never desided on what to actually make with them! Photo frame is a great idea.

Looks great, you have good finish woodworking skills.
I was thinking it might look good if you turned it upside down and gave the back the same mouldings, you could have a centerpiece, maybe glue some mirriors on the reverse. just throwing that out there.

If you were close to me, I would give you a free dumpster full of raw material. The ones around here are usually half rotten and covered with a dozen coats of lead containing paint. My son is a contractor and has a dumpster truck, I drive it for him and take those to the dump. That said, reusing something is a good idea.

We have friend who took windows like this, decorated them and hung them up with 8"x10" pictures in them at her daughters wedding reception.

She used each frame as a sort of scrapbook and they turned out really well.

Those are nice. Thanks for taking the time to post pictures of your project. I'm not sure why people want to come off as critical. It discourages others from posting.
