Hopefully when the breaker died it didn't single phase( allowed only one of the 110 lines to pass thru) and burn your compressor/fan.

Oh yeah dont touch any of the contacts on the capacitor without first shorting them out with a screwdriver as they can hold up to 440 volts in a residential unit and you will barely remember what happened when " if " you wake up.
Sometimes, troubleshooting stuff is best left to the pros. The OP in this case has difficulties with simply resetting a circuit breaker.
That is a single phase service, single phasing is when 1 leg of a 3 Ø circuit is lost. BTW, single pole contactors are common on HVAC equipment which means they only switch 1 leg of the 240V supply.
You are correct in regards to some equipment switching only one leg of a 220 circuit(I find that to personally be a cheap stupid unsafe way to build a piece of equipment).
Pull the disconect out by the AC unit and pull the panel off of it . The capacitor is going to be a round cylinder with 3-4 wires going to the top of it if the top is rounded up and not flat and rexessed into the top then you have a blown capacitor . The only way you are going to get one on the 4th of July will be to call an AC guy as all the supply houses will be closed " trust me I are an AC guy and although I am working tomorrow all the supply houses here are closed " .

I wouldn't be telling people that without telling them to pull the disconnect first.

Not sure if basic internet electrical HVAC troubleshooting is something I would provide.
And a good AC guy will have a few spare parts for emergencies.
