Honey House

Ok I got to ask. "the honey house" I see a nice large shed. I don't see anything inside or out that has anything to do with Honey ? What Made it a honey house ?

The previous owner kept bees for years. The honey house was where he separated and processed the honey.

Jamie, Andy has the correct answer. Over the years, Mr Johnson had over 85 bee hives on the property at one time. In fact, Mr Johnson was president of the Illinois Bee Keepers Association for a while. Take a look at the You Tube video, Restored 1930's Auto Shop:

That is home movies of the old shop and property from the 1950's and early '60's. At the 1:40 mark you'll see dozens of his bee hives. The small building where he had his equipment to separate and process the honey was always referred to by the family as The Honey House.

That processing equipment was still in place in the Honey House when I bought the property. Unfortunately, at the time, I didn't think to take any pictures of the equipment. One of the son-in-laws requested the processing equipment so that's where it all wound up.

I'll get some follow-on pictures of the Honey House as it's now being refurbished. It will live on for the foreseeable future.

MisteR Tee, any contact details for booking for this camp at La Mans would be appreciated. David

The site is on the Pistonheads campsite at Blue Nord & the website we booked at is 1st Tickets, http://www.1st-tickets.co.uk/ They should be announcing tickets for the Classic early next year (it takes place in 2018!) but they also do other events too.

That's a great suggestion MisteR Tee, thanks for the thought.

Also, how about a picture or two of your slingshot?

Thomas

Ok, since you ask so nicely Tom, I don't want to intrude on your excellent thread (one can hardly call it a thread now, can one? More like a great book you can't put down!)

Here's one of me at this year's Dragstalgia (our version of the CHHR), lifting the wheels with the wheelie bars hard on the track. Every run was a PB, culminating in a best ET of 12.71 @ 111.54 mph, still trying to get my head around the shift sequence on my much-modified BW 35 trans but I think I've got it now. The best this has run in the past was 10.83 @ 124 mph, but that was on 30% Nitro & I'm still only on methanol, so not bad for a 4 cylinder Austin Healy Sprite engine!!!

20 posts per page and this is post 9927.73 posts until this thread hits the 10K mark and I think Thomas should have that honor. That should be at the to of page 500 if my math's right. I don't think there's any thread on any other boards that's this big, but I could be wrong.

Well that's a very nice gesture Charlie. If it should work out that way I'd be honored to do post #10,000 :)eek:)!

As you might have guessed I've been hard at it 12 -14 hour days, 7 days a week. There has been so much going on I just haven't taken time off to post about it. Here's a brief recap of some of the activities.

A couple of weeks ago this beautiful truck showed up out in front of the shop, right on time @ 07:00 in the morning.

It was carrying 24 tons (22 metric tons) of some of the most gorgeous granite building stone you've ever seen. That stone was supplied by my good friends Karen and André at Adirondack Natural Stone: http://www.adirondacknaturalstone.com/ If you'll recall, that's the quarry I visited last March to pick out what stone I was going to use.

The truck was also carrying a wooden crate, seen on the far right on the load.

That crate contains the fireplace slate hearthstones from Sheldon Slate Products: http://www.sheldonslate.com/ located in Granville, New York - just a very few miles away from the Adirondack granite stone quarry.

Andy was the truck driver and he kept his truck...

...spotless inside. A most pleasant fellow who was intrigued with my building project and the old shop as well. He kept in contact with me as he got closer to the shop and set up the delivery for first thing in the morning.

Using the LULL I easily off loaded 13 pallets of material. Once I had the actual stone I was able to confirm the brick I was going to use so, 1 week later...

...Ted showed up...

...with his Peterbilt...

...loaded with 24 tons of brick from Michigan.

Once again the LULL was used...

...to unload it all without breaking a single brick! I'm getting pretty good at operating all this heavy equipment! :D

The week after that, well....... I'll just have to post about that next time.

We've got some stone and brick installed now and it looks just terrific, the mount for the material lift is completed, the main water service has been installed and much of the tubing for the radiant floor heat on the 2nd floor has been installed. Electrical service is set to be trenched and installed in a couple of days, roof shingling any time now was well as a copper lighting rod system installation happening shortly. Don't give up on me just yet.

Also I've noted the additional Beltsville Shell reader list requests and those have been duly noted and the new list will be posted shortly.

Thanks again everyone for all your positive vibes. It is certainly working.

Thomas

Beltsville Shell

Lyndon, I've sent you a Private Message. I need your mailing address to send you Beltsville Shell so it can start on it's Australian/New Zealand tour. Please PM it to me.

I had my friend, Chris, the owner of the book bindery, repair it. Originally it was glued together and a few pages had come loose. He took it apart and reinforced the spine...

...and then sewed it together so it's much stronger now. While he was doing that...

... he added 6 blank pages (3 in front and 3 in back) for future sign off's in the front and back of the book. He also reinforced the outside of the spine so the cover won't be as prone to damage...

...when sliding it in and out of /baba's very nice slip cover.

Lastly Dennis quickly mailed me the misplaced Metropolitan Police badge book marker so the original has been recovered. At the same time, Baz promptly mailed me a replacement badge. I'll keep the original with the book; Baz, what would you like me to do with the 2nd badge? I'd be happy to return it to you if you would like it back.

So that's about it for Beltsville Shell at the moment. It's been roaming around the world for close to 4 years now, the most widely traveled and read copy of BS in history I would imagine.

BTW, author Cary Thomas is coming to Bonneville in less than 2 weeks, for his first ever visit to the salt. He's meeting up with Lou and myself for Speed Week and we'll give him a personal guided tour of the wonders of land speed racing first hand. He's really pumped up about it and so are we!

I'm thinking that Thomas needs to do a "review" of where he started vs where he is now. ...and LOTS OF PICS.

One heck of an idea, if he has time to do it. Think of it as a pre-test or refresher for the test.:lol_hitti

 Great idea! And if he breaks it into three or four posts in quick succession he should be able to capture the coveted 10,000th post honor (CTTPH)

Actually he just has to post a couple of times and get the 10k slot. He can come back later and fill them in.

I've got your PM Lyndon. We're set to start electrical service trenching @ 07:30 tomorrow morning...

...and are trying to get everything done in 1 day. We're using the same trencher as seen above trenching my water line in.

If I get a chance I'll get BS in the mail to you tomorrow or Friday and will let you know.

If the 2nd fellow in line doesn't respond in a timely fashion, skip him and move on. I'm concerned someone will initially want to read it, have it sent to them and they lose interest and forget about it and loose it.

Lots of feverish activity going on here in TCOTU.

Looking at that last picture I had to stop and check it was the same house. Somehow it looks smaller now.

Keep up the good work.

I'm with you Andy. That technique would never have occurred to me. Wow! X2

Thomas

I wouldn't have known either except on the vices thread they suggest putting in before and after pictures. They suggested putting in the "before" pictures in one post and "reserving" the next post for the "after" pics.

Gotta pay attention... that might be on the test...

Many thanks for the kind words. Perhaps just to clarify things, the engine is 1275cc bored out to 1293cc which is approx 79 cubic inches with a belt driven Marshall cabin blower supercharger, Vertex magneto & a home made fuel injection system running on methanol. It's not the fastest or quickest of its type, the designer of the chassis who pioneered this type of dragster, Harold Bull, ran a best of 9.26 at 152mph! The quickest dragster with this type of engine was John Whitmore with a rear-engined version that ran 8.5 & mid 150s, but they both ran Nitro which mine has in the past.

Photobucket was having a snit the last couple of days so I couldn't copy photo's which was a little annoying. I had more time then to post but I still wanted to get something on here.

I'm getting pretty good at striking the stone mortar joints...

... after the stone has been laid. I want to reveal just a slight edge of the stone face. That narrows the mortar joint and allows for a slight shadow which really makes the stone stand out. The stone hasn't been cleaned yet, it still has a dull mortar haze on it. It'll brighten up considerably and show off its colors once we clean it. We're going to use Sure Klean 600 on both the brick and stone to clean the surfaces.

Here you can see how the stone and brick look together, neither has been cleaned yet. This is the corner the power meter is going to be set on. That's the large conduit on the bottom left. The 2 smaller, short ones on the right are for phone and cable. In the middle is the feed for the barn power.

When the walls were being poured we provided a brick ledge as you can see.

Here's that very same corner now with brick installed on part of it.

These are the heavy duty wall ties we're using on the stone and brick. 4" rings for the brick and 5" for the stone. They're galvanized so they should last indefinitely,or least a very, very long time. :) The screws have a rubber washer under the washers to help seal the screws to the side of the building.

They have slots so you can position the rings easily...

...into the course of brick. We're staggering them every 16" (41 cm) and screwing them directly into the underlying wall studs.

We're also flashing the brick. In case moisture gets behind the brick it needs a place to drain out. This flashing material is backed with adhesive which is secured to the building and placed over a course of brick.

It is then sealed to the brick. Any moisture behind the brick will fall down inside the wall and then move across this material...

...and exit out these weep ports that are set periodically into a brick head joint. I'll try to get a better picture of the weep ports before they are installed. They are multi-celled and small enough to keep bugs out. They might seem high up the course of brick but once the ground grade is brought up they'll be very close to grade.

Every so often brick needs to be palletized...

...and sometimes that glamours job falls to yours truly. It's all good though, there's nothing I'm not doing during construction.

I expect to be an ace stone and brick mason when this is all done.

There is much more to come. Check back.

As a reminder, this coming weekend Bonneville Speed Week starts on the salt flats. Lou and I will be there, how about you? :3gears:

Beltsville Shell Is Australian Bound!!

To all my good friends in Australia and New Zealand, Beltsville Shell has finally set sail for your corner of the world. It was mailed from The Center Of The Universe this afternoon. Lyndon is #1 and has organized the reader list while it's there. Perhaps he will post his latest list here so everyone there can see where they are slotted in?

It's been a long wait but I'm confident it'll be worth it. We're approaching 50 sign-offs in it!

Author Cary Thomas is coming to Bonneveille this week for the first time and Lou and I are planning on a personal guided tour for him. We're going to get him signed onto a team crew...

...so he'll have access to the starting line along with us. For example that's Seth Hammonds gorgeous streamliner on the starting line in 2012 about to start an early morning run.

Thanks very much for that. :bounce: :rocker:

I will let you know when it arrives. I have now made contact with the next recipient after me, and will, later on post up the last distribution list (I've got to find it on my thread). I do recall that after me it's going to VMX42 in northern Sydney, then onto Steve (1/2 Cup) in Victoria.

But I'll update the schedule soon (it's nearly dinner time here, so that comes 1st). :lol_hitti

Eventually it will make it's way back to me from Rod (Grumblebum), which will probably be by way of a catch up (since we know each other), and then it will be packaged very well, and securely sent off to NZ.
