Long time lurker, first time poster.....

This has been such an epic thread Thomas, thank you for this. I have killed many hours of slow days at work reading every post of this thread. I'm happy to say today I finally reached the end of it. I come from "garage guy" lineage myself, so can completely understand your almost OCD compulsion to do what you do/did. That was one heck of a job to do that! I'm still trying to wrap my head around close to 60 tons of scrap metal!

Here's a few pics of present garage and cars. The woodshop opens up to the 30 x 30 garage area below.

Merry Christmas all!

I did spend a little more time sorting in the tool shed, among other things I did today.

IMG_6809.jpg

These were rescued from a fate of rust and neglect.

IMG_6810.jpg

That's a very beefy chisel which I suspect was used to cut apart old welds. What it's leaning on is a solid chuck of perfectly round steel which will clean up nicely. Always handy to have different shapes and sizes of steel like that laying around.

A while back I recovered these from around the hydraulic floor press...

IMG_3280.jpg

IMG_3281.jpg

IMG_3283.jpg

This plate was especially rusty so I spent a little time cleaning it up.

IMG_3282.jpg

It is still badly pitted but better now. It would be too thin if I leveled out all the rust pits.

IMG_3819.jpg

After a little powder coating (that's dust on it from my gloves- gloss black will do that to you) and...

IMG_3818.jpg

... it's ready for more years of service with the floor press.

IMG_3813.jpg

Just a chuck of steel that might be useful...

IMG_3816.jpg

The round cylinder on the right had a flat steel bar welded on one side. With the flat side to the press, it can be used to press a curve into an object.

IMG_3821.jpg

Now, after powder coating all of it, no rust worries. :)

Thomas

TOOLS!!!!!

Already Powder Coated??? You've been holding out on us...

More please..... :bounce:

It's early, but I'm going to wish Tom and Chris (and all the loyal readers of this thread) a Merry Christmas! Tomorrow I will not be able to be online at all, I have a long day of driving ahead. I figure all told it will be about 300 miles. I am up by my dad for a week, so I need to drive home (about 50 miles) to pick up my mother in law, drive almost 80 miles to my in-laws, 80 miles back to drop off my mother in law, about 20 miles to my older brother, then about 40 back to my dad's. What a way to spend Christmas Eve! So once again, Merry Christmas to all!!!

Is this a great time of the year or what! Just wish all of you lived a wee bit closer so we could gather at the shop and fun that would be!!

Now to the task at hand.

IMG_6812.jpg

The poor John Deere has been waiting for "new shoes" which...

IMG_6821.jpg

IMG_6818.jpg

..have arrived.

IMG_6819.jpg

Rick and his crew did their normal outstanding work.

IMG_6823.jpg

The rears with the tires mounted...

IMG_6825.jpg

...and installed.

IMG_6826.jpg

IMG_6827.jpg

The wheel weights were a bare to install without chewing up the rim.

IMG_6829.jpg

But with patience and a couple of towels for padding, I managed to win the day; both were done with nary a scratch.

IMG_6831.jpg

Fronts mounted...

IMG_6833.jpg

... and installed.

IMG_6832.jpg

IMG_6835.jpg

With the wheels done and the snow blower soon to be mounted next up will be cleaning up the loader, rebuilding the cylinders (note the leaks) and powder coating it. That will be good winter work.

Glassbead those hammer heads, then wirewheel to make em shine & then hit the handles with BLO. Polishing the faces is not mandatory...

Thus:

I used plastic bead blasting to remove the paint & other **** from two of the handles.

of course, if you can't live without polishing....

Some more of your outstanding work we've come expect of you Rick. Thanks for posting it for us. Personally I'd like my aircraft tech to have hammer faces polished like that. It instills confidence in their work, if you know what I mean. :D

Hello Bandit01 and what a great shop, nice work there and thanks for sharing it and the totally cool cars with us here!!

When describing me I note that you called it "your almost OCD compulsion", emphasis on almost. Hey, I resemble that remark! :) I further note your statement that "I'm happy to say today I finally reached the end of it." Well, I'm not too sure how to react to you're being happy that it's the end....but it's really just a temporary pause- ATP -anyway.

Welcome to our family and fellow lurkers here and when you come to Hume, (I've been there....more than once) please do plan on stopping by for a visit.

Hi Thomas,

I am about to go down to the shed to start playing at building a Cigar Box Guitar, I was challenged to build by a friend in Oklahoma, but typical of this forum and your thread.... I first need to pop in and check some threads and progress.

I am amazed that after nearly 2 years your thread is close to 1.2 million views.... not bad for a story about cleaning up.

Thanks as always for sharing.

And may I wish you and your family, as well as all those who look in here a wonderfull Festive Season.

Heck, I'm only an hour (or less) away. Ha Ha.

Actually how do you like those tires on the JD? I'm running the R4's and they have been good on the snow, but tear up more grass than I care for (JD2320 w/loader).

Great idea on the wheels. I bet in person that detail isn't obvious at first that they are PC'd, but really makes the tractor pop.
Won't the bucket just get tore up with first use if PC'd?

With the flip of a power switch and the use of a browser, we're all just a few clicks away from your garage. Keep posting so we all can continue to share in the fun.

Merry Christmas, R1chy

Tom: My wife agrees! I was able to "borrow" my in laws wifi (I set it up, so I know the password!) and get online on my iPod Touch (small screen, but better than nothing!). Nice job on the JD wheels! Have a safe and merry Christmas!

Thomas,

Thanks for posting your Christmas greetings photos. Your Beautiful Bride looks like she was having a splendid holiday season. I hope that Cameron was home to enjoy the holidays with you two.

I just found a 4 ton Walker to go with my small Walker. I am headed to Summit on Saturday for another lift pad! My goal for 2012 is to learn how to post photos on this site. I am a bit of a slow learner.

Best Wishes for the holidays & thanks again for sharing your saga.

When you see the old, painted rims...

...and then the new...

IMG_7046.jpg

...powder coated ones you can see how right you are about making the tractor "pop"

Now I'm mainly getting the loader powder coated to get the loader frame all cleaned up and spiffy. The bucket will over time get get chewed up eventually, but that will depend on what I'm loading. Gravel and rocks will chip the coating pretty fast whereas dirt won't touch it. I'll coat the bucket and the backside, ends of it should remain nice for a very long time. Powder coating is tough stuff so the rest of it might remain in better shape, longer than you realize. We'll see.

Mr Watson, being less than an hour away you have little excuse to not stop by......on multiple occasions.......to help wax the anvil! :D If you ever do get by the Center Of The Universe, please stop on in and you can relax about waxing the anvil......my tractor, now that's a different matter all together. :)

About the tires; my old John Deere had full blow AG tires.

JD650Sm4.jpg

And for what I was doing at the property at the time they made a lot of sense. Now that the property is all cleaned up and grass is growing nicely I needed to change.

My new JD has...

IMG_7047.jpg

IMG_7049.jpg

...turf tires instead of R4's which, as you mentioned, can be a little hard on the grass. I was curious how the turf's would work in the snow and I've managed very well with them. For winter I use the grade box without the teeth in and I have 60 lbs (27 kg) rear wheel weights and rears rarely spin. The fronts, with that heavy snow blower mounted up front never spin. If I were only using the loader in the snow that might be different. Light grade work also doesn't seem to bother them either. Put it low, AWD and it just goes. The tractor weighs around 1,900- 2,000 lbs (864- 909kg).

Hey there Grizz1963, nice to hear from you again. As I have seen on your Mixed Grill... thread, you have done so much with so little space it's amazing, nice work all the way around! Every time our friends from the UK or "The Continent" come for a visit, they invariably remark how envious they are of all the room we seem to have here in the States.

Your thought about this being basically a story about cleaning up............well, not exactly. Yes and no. At first, well.... ya, sorta, but it's covered a lot of other ground since then I think. Well, be that as it may, I've still got some more clean up to go so check back with us, will you,and thank you very much for the Holiday wishes.

BTW, the guy who had the sign made using your signature tag line....you should start a business selling them yourself. Wasn't that well done?!
