Actually, "selling some of that stuff" is kind of funny, MN4x4. We've advertised many things for sale and give-away (the 2-car garage, for example), had lots of garage sales, and opened the buildings to car groups and antique-tractor fans, but few or no takers. Then a few months or years later after we've scrapped things to make room, someone will come along asking if we still have "such and such". "I would have paid you for that" is heard around here a lot! We're not in this for the money. It's a lot of work and a total labor of love.

Chris

P.S. Oh, fun, too!! Can't leave that out!

Are there any more shop projects coming up? You two are keeping my dream alive! (By which I mean I'm meticulously noting down the components and designs of your workbenches, especially the heavyweight steel ones, with a view to someday staffing a workshop of my own with them.)

I love the idea of the benches as somewhat autonomous from the workshop's hardpoints - like the PDR - with plug sockets, extension leads, air line extensions, lockable casters and the like - so the workshop can be rapidly reconfigured for different jobs.

I'm a little behind in catching up on some questions and requests here. I will follow up, promise. The purpose of this post is to alert everyone, especially those in the Ronkonkoma, New York area about this Walker floor jack on eBay:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/22146836099...em=&sspagename=ADME:X:RTQ:MOTORS:1123&vxp=mtr

Now's your chance to get a complete vintage #884 Walker Big Boy, 4 ton capacity that is complete and the seller states it works fine. Such a deal! I'm sure it will need some service work but this looks to be a great starting point. Current bid is $13.50  It's for pick up only, seller won't ship it so someone in that part of the country is going to get a very nice jack at what appears to be a great price.

Full disclosure, I have no connection with this Walker jack , I am only making it's presence known to all my friends on this thread.

Good luck and if someone here is the winning bidder check in with us will you? Thanks.

Hello Thomas ! Hi Chris !

Thank you ever so much for the hospitality tonight !
It was great meeting a bunch of new people and seeing their awe of your slice of heaven at the shop.
Thanks for the jigs to go with the go-kart chassis setup and showing me the original sketch for the frames , THAT was cool!
That sketch may warrant some of the frame work Chris does for display in the shop.

Craig it was a pretty special evening out at the shop wasn't it? Glad you could make it out.
Chris and I hosted our 2nd annual "Per-Bloomington Gold Corvette Cook Out Extravaganza"! We had over 50 folks in attendance...

... and 29 Corvettes of all years parked amongst the trees...

That walnut tree seen behind the red car on the right...

...is seen here, in the back on the right. Who would have guessed in a few years time it would be surrounded by precious metal and fiberglass?

I asked if anyone wanted to take peek inside the Tool Shed and Lean-To and almost everyone did so I opened them up for the evening with folks wandering in and out of them as the evening wore on. A few items found new homes as some guests spotted a few things they couldn't live without.

If only Mr Johnson could have seen his backyard tonight.

Looked like great weather to enjoy a top down Corvette cruise and to just hang out at the Center of the Universe.
It also looks like a very nice gathering of many vettes. :3gears:

What a great juxtaposition of those last two photos, with that unique tree anchoring them both.

Even someone unfamiliar with the story would pause.

Excellent bookends!

No autojumblers out there who's wanted to buy stuff so to say wholesale from you? Kind of pity so much parts being scrapped.

magnusk750 - we've tried advertising things "for sale", but giving things away has proven to be the most successful. People have called to say they're on the way to get something, then never show up, or want to haggle down the price (which was virtually nothing to start with), but won't even take it when we finally say they can have it for nothing. Sometimes, we just have to free up space. Not the best solution, but that's what it's come to, in some cases. Thus we have a collection of stories from people who come along after the fact - "I could have used that...", "I would have paid you for that, "You could have made a bundle on that from some collector), "That was from a such-and-such car", "You should let the car clubs know about this". Been there, done that, got the T-shirt, so to speak. The property is shaping up to be what Tom envisions, and that's what counts!

Don't get to familiar with that Anvil.... If Thomas finds it out in the yard alone in the moonlight some evening you might loose your visitation privileges...

Thomas & Chris,
I cannot thank you enough for sharing the center of the universe with me and my friends.

Friday fish fry at the Philo Tap with friends = priceless.

Spending Friday with Thomas in the golf cart was so relaxing.

Thanks to both of you for your hospitality.

Terry - it was great getting together for Fish Friday at the Philo Tavern with even more friends! I know Tom enjoyed getting around on the golf cart at Bloomington Gold! I'm sure having someone to talk to made the time pass faster for you. We're looking forward to you being able to attend the Thursday night cookout in the future.
(I met soo many new friends this weekend - remembering names is an impossibility at this time. Thanks to all the Corvette Forum members who came to the cookout with their 14+ Corvettes. If you saw me Saturday at the show and I didn't say Hi, sorry. There were too many new people for me to recognize. I wasn't purposely ignoring you.)

I have one question though, if there is not a special reason for it, by you or the Johnsson family, how come there is'nt a picture of Virgil Johnsson himself somewhere? I would love to see what the man looked like, kind of get a face to the name of the man that started all of this a long time ago. And if it was'nt for him, we would not have had this entertaining journey.

Just a thought, but if i'm out of line here, just disregard my question please.
And though i'm really late at it: Congratulations on your anniversary!
Thanks for letting us be a part of this!

truckswede I'm very sorry for the long delay to your excellent question regarding no picture of Mr Johnson here.
When I first started this thread I was very sensitive to the family and didn't want to intrude on their privacy anymore than necessary.
Since they, nor I for that matter, had any idea how this thread might evolve I chose to wait and see how they might react.
Through the years they have been highly supportive of my efforts both regarding the property and shop and this thread.
Because of that I felt comfortable that when the circumstances warranted I would indeed post such a picture.
Then the problem was finding a suitable picture, thus the delay in my reply to you.
The family didn't really have any good pictures of Mr Johnson out in the shop environment but one family member had these of him, dressed in his shop attire...

...taken in the backyard with a family dog sometime in the 1960's. If you look closely at the two name patches sown on his shirt, Johnson Welding Serv and Virgil...

...you'll recognize them from these we found in one of Mrs. Johnson's sewing machines.
He's also seen wearing his welders skull cap, which as I recall, is what he almost always wore.
That's the image of him that I remember when I picture him in my mind.

So there you have it, a picture to go with his shop and his legacy, a man I greatly admired.

He had to be a great man, just by the way that dog is so comfortable around Him!

Thomas, thank you so much for those photos! That completes the first part of the 1930's Auto Shop for me. And i appologize for misspelling his last name, Johnson also happens to be a very common last name here in Sweden, but we spell it with two ss. So, error of habit i guess.

One almost scary thing about seeing the photos of Virgil Johnson is the resemblance to my own father, they look like they could have been brothers.
Almost a little spooky, but brings back nice memories too.

So once again Thomas, thank you for sharing! I'll go get another bucket of popcorn now, and sit down for the rest of the journey.

Here is an update/non-update of the state/country counts. Nothing has changed for awhile. I attempted to get someone to post in from the space station, but my astronaut connection left there before I could get that done. There is still hope, however. Following is the last update from page 340 of this thread (this includes everything from the beginning of the thread). If you have posted in to this thread and don't see your country listed, please pm me and I will make the correction.

---
---

I suppose it's about time to update the state/country list from 12/8/2010 (post #1921, pg. 97). Page 340 is easier to get to than page 97 when I'm trying to look for the post again. I've copied it below with the update for Malasia I just made. If anyone feels I missed their state/country on the list, just send me a PM so I can correct it. There is sooo much content on here and some people post with no locations (or imbed their country as anulv just did). We have all the continents covered. If you have a way to get us the Space Station, that would be a great addition!

Chris

Thanks for joining, William. We had an official Scotland (country #2) early on, but he actually lives there. You made the extra effort to move LOL. You have now been officially initiated because you actually took the time to read the entire thread before posting ( I have ways of knowing this - kind of like The Great Karnak). Can you believe some people actually admitted to skipping ahead in the thread just to post in? I don't think that will help them very much on the test! Omphaloskeptic calls it our "Fortress of Solitude". (Is that like Max Smart's "Cone of Silence"?) (we watched too much TV in our youth, I think, but TV shows were actually worthwhile back then) I say you've been sucked into the vortex. All in all, it's our little slice of heaven. Tom is of Scottish heritage (McMillan on his mother's side).

Oops!! I violated my self-imposed "no more posting rule". I must not be busy enough. No more hints either. (I think that there have been more than 24,000 "hits" since last Wednesday, putting us closer to 1/2 million every day. I'm working my fingers to the bone getting that test ready!)

Chris

Here's the real reason for posting:

Here's an update of the state/country list (from page 86). If I missed anyone, sorry. Just let me know. I don't want to leave anyone out of the fun!

** indicate states that are represented so far. If you've posted, but haven't identified your location, you can PM me if you want and I'll ** the state or add the country of origin. So far 35 states have posted. (4/29/10 - we now have 37 thanks to Todd and Tom in Nebraska and West Virginia)(also welcome Jay for #38)(I can't remember who was #39, but #40 on 7/3/10 is wats56 from WY)(and #41 on 9/27/10 from NH). Only 7 more states to go!
As of 11/16/10, we now have 44 states (as of 12/14/10)(I know those other 6 states are lurking!)(45 included as of 3/14/11) (46 states as of 5/4/11 with DE coming on board) 47 states accounted for 5/5/11 (Welcome Guam! 5/8/11)(48 states as of 7/21/11 with the addition of HI!) 50 states as of 1/17/13

Wow Chris,

From that list would come a crazy extended GJ family reunion. The hay field would be covered with cars, crazy collectables and stories. It could almost throw the center of the universe out of balance. ....NAH!!!

Thanks for all the updates.

56vette461 - we balance everything out here at the COTU! (though we may need to do everything in shifts - we may have to have Australia/New Zealand at the same time as Canada to balance things out, then follow with Europe and the Far East/South Pacific areas) (or maybe we could all meet at Antarctica and tilt the Earth's axis - hmmm, would that make things better or worse?)

A35Plt - the new house build is "on hold" - our current house has not sold, so we won't be breaking ground this year. Too many other projects taking up our time right now anyway. The right person/family will come along at the right time, so no worries.

Still having fun, fun, fun and more fun! It feels strange being off the internet for 2+weeks, but lots of things are keeping us busy (really?!). Tales of RA, bees, cars (new and vintage) and more are forthcoming. Never a dull moment in the COTU.

FLASH BULLETIN!!!!!!!!! HOLD THE PRESSES!!!!!!!!!

BELTSVILLE SHELL Version 1.0 has resurfaced :shocking:............................

.................in New Zealand!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :willy_nil :willy_nil :willy_nil :willy_nil

Here is author Cary Thomas personalizing Version 1.0 last March when Chris and I visited him before it went on a "walk about" down under.

It is presently making it's Southern Hemisphere debut as long as it's down there but it is alive and well I'm told.

Stand by for further details.

Just another part of the continuing saga of the Restored 1930's Auto Shop.

Greatly relieved Thomas :bounce:

Maybe you should post Mr. Johnson and the the family dog in the show your garage dog thread also. I am sure the family would like that spot covered too.

I drove by the original Beltsvile Shell this morning, the original 2 bay building has been replaced by the usual 3 bay and gas pump canopy years ago. The Route One landscape is slowly bu surely changing to a more urban encroachment feel.

Pfew, I'm glad it resurfaced.

Is there any chance it will visit Europe?

I see no reason in the world why it can't do a "Continental" tour also. Not sure how long New Zealand will have it and it might possibly go to Australia since it's so close before returning to the US. There is a backlog here that I know of but if a few folks in the UK and the Continent want to read and personalize it, I can make that happen. The fun part would be for me to bring it over in person and ****** it to the first person on the "Continental Tour". Once I get a handle on when it will return here I'll have a better idea of when we might get it "across the pond".

What forum is the "Garage Dog" thread found? That sounds like a good idea.

I talked with Cary Thomas on our visit with him earlier this year about the original Beltsville Shell station. He too was lamenting how urban sprawl was changing the landscape all across the country and was sad to see the original station was long gone.

---------------------------------------------

I'm just a little behind in catching up here having just returned from a 2,500 mile (4,023 km) racing journey but here's the latest barn project. Helping a friend put new brake lines on his '73 Corvette that he's owned for the last 30 years.

I also finished up another shop project that I'll post about shortly.

I think some of you will think this project might be of some use and interest. Also, further details on our far flung traveling book are still coming up as well. Did I ever mention what a relief it was to learn that BS 1.0 has found the light of day again. Thanks everyone.

This should be the thread where every posts the garage dog photos

Thanks for the link. I hadn't seen that thread before but I'll get Mr Johnson's pooch posted in.

Now, for details on Beltsville Shell Version 1.0. When I mailed it to the next reader last spring the box it was shipped in got mixed up with several packages he had received at the same time. He was forwarding several packages to a gentleman in New Zealand and BS 1.0 was among them. There was a couple months delay in getting everything out and BS 1.0 was literally the last package unpacked from the container once it was in New Zealand. Fortunately that fellow was familiar with the story of the lost copy of BS 1.0 and informed our red faced friend in the USA that it had been found. It was then circulated and read among some fellow New Zealander enthusiasts and is reportedly now, back on it's way to America where, no doubt it will receive a red carpet home coming along with appropriate media coverage. :D

So that is an interesting side note to the continuing saga of the traveling BS that I'll now share with author Cary Thomas. When it's been read and ready for the next person it'll be posted in here and will be mailed to the next reader just as has been done more than a couple dozen times now. For our friends in the UK and Europe let me know if there are several of you who would like to read and personalize it. If so I'll make sure it gets across the pond where it'll stay for a while circulating there before I'll ask for it's return back to the US.

There has been more progress in the Lean-To/ Tool Shed but my annual pilgrimage to Bonneville approaches!

Here's a report from the Southern California Timing Association (SCTA):

"Bonneville Salt Condition Report Saturday 10AM August 2: Great news from Bonneville! The courses look to be in excellent condition. There is no standing water on any of the courses and they all look good. For all of the really fast vehicles this is your time to shine. Lots of good shutdown and courses that will go 10 miles. Time to load up and get on the road. Unless we have a serious thunderstorm between now and the start we will have some of the best salt in years. It appears thin in some areas but it's hard and smooth. This is going to be a very fast year."

Jacob Bagnell (the fellow who is the stepson and now current custodian of the Al Jerauld "Y" manifold) was within 1 mph of setting a new speed record with a motorcycle he has built.

He and his son will be there again trying to evoke the ghost of Al when Al was running his belly tanker on the salt. For Jacob to be racing on the salt completes the circle from Mr Johnson's shop to Bonneville and back. Take a look at and scroll to post #1774.:

Put me on the UK list for the BS1 European tour please Thomas.
Thanks,
Peter

Here's how we'll do this. After the present list for BS 1.0 in the USA is done, Laro13 in the Netherlands will be first on the Continent to receive it. If there are others on the Continent as well, send me a PM and we'll add you to the list. Once everyone there is caught up, we'll have it sent across the Channel to the UK where Peter (Gingger22pm) will be first and he'll send it to others in the UK. Last on the list in the UK will send it back state side to me. How does that sound?

Right now it's headed to Hemihead2 in California. When he's done he'll let us know here and tell us who's getting it next. To this point, everyone who has read it thoroughly enjoyed it and it's been fun passing it around also. Sit tight, it should be worth the wait.

That's great news about Beltsville Shell 1.0. Of course we never doubted it would show up, right? It just needed to go worldwide, and nothing was going to hold it back!

The Restored 1930's Auto Shop thread (R.N.T.A.S.T) has started to generate it's own mojo!!

Thomas, I really liked the picture of the Jerauld's belly tanker.
State of the art in a much simpler time...
(I can't even imagine the cojones it took to drive something like that in anger on the salt)....

Soo, I hope nobody minds that I took the liberty of doing a tiny bit of retouch?

Great Maurice, at present you're #3 on the UK list. I hope to have definitive word that BS 1.0 is back in the US shortly. Last time I had the book there were roughly 20+ previous signees. Once the inside front and back covers are full I'll have my friend Chris Hohn:

...the book maker(remember?), add some additional pages and perhaps...

... even make a hard cover for it...

... with a slip case of some sort.

Mike, I really did think it would eventually show up which is why I was so slow putting together Version 2.0. You should be proud of your terrific original idea and how well it's been received by all our friends here. It also helps that the story is such a compelling one. It's a typical American story that many folks "of a certain age" in this country can identify with. For those in other countries it's an acurate window into what was happening in this country during the 1960's in many communities all over America.

Belly tankers of the 1950's were a challenge to drive at speed due to the short wheel base. That made them "mighty twitchy" I'm told by those brave souls who did hammer them down the salt. When you're young and immortal though, that really didn't matter. :D

I think the retouched Belly Tanker print looks great, thanks for posting it.
