Probably an earlier version? Rear axle is different, no magnesium rear wheel or handmade frontdisc, and no indy tires...

Same driving position though. Who needs a rollbar? :scared:

Wow Mike, that's a picture of Al's tanker that I had never seen before. I'll check with Lou tomorrow morning to find out if he's ever seen it before. Meantime, maybe Jacob will post in about it.

The top picture I'm guessing is from El Mirage dry lake, it doesn't look like Bonneville. As for no roll bar, remember when you're young and immortal..................:3gears:

Since I'm off to Bonneville soon here are a few more Al Jerauld tanker pictures...

He was running in class "A" in this picture.

Now he was running in class "O".

The above article from Hot Rod Magazine was dated September, 1952.

This is a later picture of the tanker showing a roll bar now installed.

I'll post some Bonneville updates from this years event, 2014, as I am able, stand by.

Belly Tank racers often remind me of the Formula 500 cars we used to have over here. Both products of a simpler time.
I must go to Bonneville one day. And my wife wonders what I would do if I retire early!

Here's how we'll do this. After the present list for BS 1.0 in the USA is done, Laro13 in the Netherlands will be first on the Continent to receive it. If there are others on the Continent as well, send me a PM and we'll add you to the list. Once everyone there is caught up, we'll have it sent across the Channel to the UK where Peter (Gingger22pm) will be first and he'll send it to others in the UK. Last on the list in the UK will send it back state side to me. How does that sound?

Right now it's headed to Hemihead2 in California. When he's done he'll let us know here and tell us who's getting it next. To this point, everyone who has read it thoroughly enjoyed it and it's been fun passing it around also. Sit tight, it should be worth the wait.

Thomas

Thanks, great idea.

Ok, wow. I have been reading this thread for a week. I have never imagined it being possible to accomplish the amount of work you have done. Amazing.

The property is amazing. Lots of treasures, lots of space, and a superb job on the restoration. Epic accomplishment.

Getting Ready for Speedweek 2014
Course Condition Update
Salt Report Wed Aug 6th
The Bonneville Salt Flats has experienced a flash cell that came over within the last hour. The storm left additional water on the salt that had been drying out nicely. Therefore the SCTA has decided to delay all activities one full day. Inspection will be held Friday, with the first racing day now scheduled for Sun Aug 10. Please do not use the access road as you will be turned around. Further updates will be posted tomorrow (Thurs) afternoon. We still believe the event will occur based on the current weather forecast.
Scott Andrews, SCTA President.

Thanks for the update, Scott. Tom and Lou Bingham reported that to me earlier. I hope all goes well out on the salt. SDRC is ready!

Short update from Bonneville:

3.5" of rain on the race course. As of inspection at 7pm tonight, the long course (#1) has only 1" of salt so there was no place for the rain to drain. Course #3 has good salt, but the lead up to it is not passable. Only officials are allowed out on the salt until at least Sunday am. The last report was 30-40% standing water which is quickly being reduced with the dry weather and sun during the day.

(Last year there were 4 courses. It's in flux how many there will be this year. Also, the amount of salt delivered last year was 670 tons. This year's promised delivery in June was only 230 tons. Salt is a bi-product of potash production which mostly takes place in the Soviet Union which is withholding exports due to economic sanctions from the US and EU.)

They will run blue lines down the sides of each course (not the center black line). The blue dye has been approved by the EPA and BLM.

Tentative plans are to open registration Sunday, do tech and set up pits, have a driver's meeting Monday morning and the first timed runs. I looked at NOAA weather forecasts/maps - it looks like they should get 5 days of runs in by Friday.

Scott, if you have further info or corrections, feel free to post in. This summary was just off the top of my head from what Tom told me tonight.

Have a great time everyone!

Chris

Chris, thanks for helping me out. I am in the local Wendover, UT, Car Quest Auto Parts store (the store owner - Mike Crawford - is the mayor of Wendover interestingly enough and a very, very cool guy.) who is kindly allowing me to use his store WiFi for an update. For those who don't know, Wendover is less than 10 miles from the Salt Flats and has been the "Go To" place for racers and spectators alike for decades.

The salt report we got this morning was still 1" of water on course #1, which is the long, 9 mile course. Course #3, (it's 5 miles long)- is in very good condition and should be ready to go, no word on the other courses. The pits have 1 1/2" of water but the most troublesome area was between the end of the paved road and leading to the pits and courses. It has about 12" of water in spots. I expect another update this evening after the 7 PM salt inspection and 8 PM officials meeting. As of now the SCTA is still planning on Sunday Tech, Monday racing. Those with internet access can visit the SCTA site for further information as well.

All the racers, participants and spectators I've talked with are very understanding, in good spirits and remain hopeful. Weather right now is fantastic with mostly clear skies and temperatures mid 80's to low 90's, good land speed racing weather. More to follow.

That's affirmative. It rained again last night so there is 1'-1.5' of standing water in crucial areas, making things virtually impassable. Tom took lots of pictures of "Lake Bonneville".

Tom and Lou are on their way home (they're in Wyoming, only 1000 miles away). This is only the 5th time since 1949 that Speed Week has been cancelled. Quite disappointing.

Kind of funny freudian slip there, Soviet Union vanished into history in 1992, though Putin makes his best to reanimate it.

Quite right on both accounts magnusk. What was old is new again. It seems sadly that history does repeat itself.

Well, THAT was fun to see. I absolutely cannot even fathom for an instant going 180mph with my chin on my knees.....

Mike, that's what makes it soooooo much fun! Especially if the salt isn't very smooth. Truly that's when men were MEN.

Bonneville 2014

Lou had polished up his rig and we set forth from the shop on a 1,500 mile (2414 Km) + journey.

You know you're out west when you see speed limit signs like this everywhere.

After about 1,400 miles we knew we were getting close to the Salt Flats when we spotted...

...the Morton Salt Company operations. Morton's company trademark motto:

When It Rains, It Pours....little did we know at the time how acurate that was going to be.

When we got there Thursday, it had rained a bunch the night before so our usual camping spot at Bend in the Road was a little muddy so we found a new place to call home.

This is the site of the future Bonneville Speedway Museum: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Bonneville-Speedway-Museum/235952389788686

Since it hasn't been built yet the Mayor of Wendover...

... Mike Crawford, seen above, graciously allowed racers to use the site to camp for Speed Week. As I had mentioned in post # 8098, Mike is the owner/operator of the local Car Quest Auto Parts store and is indeed a very, very cool guy and a great mayor from all accounts.

While we were waiting for the salt to dry out...

...Lou and I met up with Jacob Bagnell. Jacob and his son were hoping to set a new speed record with this motorcycle.

It started life as a Honda CX500, has a turbo charger added among other modifications and is flawless in its construction. To read more about the bike see:

http://baggoracing.weebly.com/-the-bonneville-beach-club.html

This was Friday and the SCTA (Southern California Timing Association) was still hoping to start and run the event a couple days late. As such, SCTA volunteers like the gentleman in the center, were going around and getting the cars and bikes tech inspected ahead of time to speed up the process once we could get out on the salt. BTW, for all you pilots out there, if the bike's nose cone looks a little familiar that's because it's a cutdown prop spinner off a Cessna. :)

With Jacobs bike passing virtually all tech items, here he is signing off on it while son, Jake Jr on the far right, is consulting the rule book.

So at this point in time, Friday afternoon, everything was looking promising...............and then it started to rain again Friday night.

The next day, here's the exit sign to the Salt Flats and note the large body of water behind the sign. There shouldn't be a lake there. We saw geese paddling out there because there was so much water and I'm not kidding! :willy_nil

This is Scott Andrews, SCTA President who, after the event was canceled, came to the group that was buying event Tee shirts (see post # 8102) to explain...

..."the water was this deep!!!!!!! out on the salt". That's why the event was canceled for only the 5th time since 1949. With that, Lou and I headed back to the shop, 1,500 miles away. Just wait until next year!

Thanks everyone. Next up, more shop projects.

Can we keep Politics out of the forum please. We have a rule about that.

That feels like a long ago now we say Das Vidania to the USSR !
Given MH-17 etc. and what is happening with two former states of the USSR being Russia and Ukraine. I think we can leave the goings on out of this topic and off the forum please.

Sorry HOTFR8 - I made my response in a PM to magnusk750. I didn't consider political implications into my original response - actually I took most of the info on potash production from an encyclopedia entry. It pays to re-read and think before posting. Thanks for the reminder!

Thomas, I'm almost positive we have crossed paths. I worked at the hardware store that supplied that bucket with the lettering on it. (From 2007 until three months ago). Primarily working back in the fastener center. I will always have special place in my heart for that store.
I'm on page 17 of the thread and on the edge of my seat!

Is Potash still a problem with Bonneville ? Many Aussies have just come home missing out on a fix of salt and wondering if it should have been ski boat racing this year.

My understanding was that salt production is down due to a potash shortage. I think this is old info. Around the US, states/towns could not get their salt allotments to maintain roads during the winter. This summer was the time to order for the coming winter and there's very little to be had (even less than last year). There is more up-to-date info about salt production. After some research on my part, the supply-line in the US seems to be the problem, not production.

Greetings to you jotimm05 and welcome to the Vortex! That hardware store was Do-It-Best on Springfield in Champaign, IL. That's my primary source for general hardware and the majority of the hardware used when I was restoring the shop.

You might have noted that I use a lot of stainless steel hardware in the shop and on various projects. A big reason is because Do-It-Best carries such an enormous amount of stainless hardware at very reasonable prices. This is a small section of the stainless steel hardware that can be found there.

Above the normal stainless nuts and bolts and washers are drawers and drawers and drawers of specialty stainless steel items. All of it including chrome hardware is serve yourself. None of it is locked up or behind a counter. It's all available to pick and choose which is really helpful. The owner, George, has a great staff as well who are knowledgeable and eager to help. It's like an old fashion kind of place that is a real hardware store in the truest sense of the word. It was an invaluable resource when I was putting the shop together.

Hello Thomas ! Hi Chris !

I can vouch for the Do It Best Hardware store too.
My employer has an account there and we use them ALL the time.
The store has a wide selection of any aspect of construction.
I've never been in the store when the place isn't crawling with tradesmen and homeowners.
Old school service at its best !

Craig and Tom,
I learned a quite a few life lessons working at that store, and still go in there for my current employer and for personal stuff. George was a great boss. He was one of the few bosses that had his head screwed on correctly.

Tom, I saw that you have an old sears compressor in the shop. Without knowing this previously, I picked one up at an estate sale yesterday in Sidney! It's gonna need some cleaning!

Beltsville Shell 1.0 Update!

I have been informed that BS 1.0 has arrived back in the United States after its walkabout in New Zealand. Here's a quote from the gentleman who sent me this massage, "The Beltsville Shell arrived today from New Zealand in fine shape. I've taken a picture of the signatures...."

Once he has read it, I requested he send it to me. The chain of requests from friends here in the USA who want to read it has gotten a bit mixed up what with the book missing for 4 months and all. Those who would like to read it and get it back in circulation should send me a PM with their address and once I have it we'll get it back out there. Those of you in Europe and the UK I have your requests. Once the current USA readers are done I'll let you know and send it across the pond, starting with Laro13 in the Netherlands.

Just another chapter in the never ending story around here but this one has a good ending. :bounce:

Hi Thomas,

Was doing some clean-up on the computer today and came across this one.

And then I remembered your picture of the Terraplane.

Thanks, Dirk.
That picture was taken as we were prepping for the Barn Build - before Sept 2009 - about 5 years ago. Time sure does go fast when you're having fun (and keeping busy)!

The summer is coming to an end, but at least 1 more drag race and our big national Lincoln show in Rockford, IL, are coming up very quickly. Our last car-related events will take place in October - a drag race and then a 3rd Sunday all-car-club potluck gathering at Fox Ridge, a beautiful park near Charleston, IL. This has taken place for about 40 years. So much to do and so little time!

Enjoy the rest of the season.

Re: A bunch of square wrenches.

Thanks Mike, very cool. I believe there are a few wrenches like those still in the tool shed.

I know I'm behind posting here. Retirement is keeping me verrrrry busy which I find to be a good thing. I've only got one more car show left this year, that's in November, the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals:

http://www.mcacn.com/features.htm

I've been invited to show the Chevy II in conjunction with a Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Race display. Other than that, racing season is over- drag racing, road racing and land speed racing. I traveled over 6,000 miles this summer when it was all said and done. Good thing I am retired! :D

Watch this space for further shop updates including the largest powder coat project to date, over 20' long!

Oh, and if I didn't mention it before...

Beltsville Shell is back in the USA after its walkabout in New Zealand and is presently in Michigan.

Here's what the inside cover looked like when I had it last week. Since you started this 2 years ago Mike, it's visited 25 readers in 12 states and 3 countries plus it's author so far. It'll soon be heading across the pond for its European debut unless someone here in the US sends me a PM requesting it before hand.

Thanks everyone.
