World's Greatest Mouse Control Device?
It's that time of year with cooler weather for many us. As we spend more time inside where it's warm and comfortable so do our little mice friends. We all know how destructive they can be and controlling them is essential. A friend of mine asked for some assistance with his garage to help keep the mouse population in check. The following design has been around for a long time and I make no claim to it, I merely assisted in it's construction. For those who have never seen one before...
Material necessary,
1. Clean 5 gallon bucket
2. 16 oz plastic soda/pop bottle, with cap.
3. Length of wire like an old coat hanger
4. A few ounces of ethylene glycol- anti freeze
5. A scrap board, about 1- 2" wide by about 24-28" long
6. Peanuts and silicone
7. Duct tape
To begin drill 2 holes opposite each other in the bucket a few inches below the top rim of the bucket so the wire can pass through it.
Next, drill 2 holes in the soda bottle, 1 centered in the bottom, the other centered in the cap.
Silicone glue rows of half shelled peanuts all around the soda bottle.
Pour about 3" of ethylene glycol in the bucket.
Place the bottle with the peanuts in the bucket and pass the wire through the side of the bucket, through the soda bottle and out the other side of the bucket, suspending it in the bucket above the ethylene glycol.
Duct tape one end of the board on the rim of the bucket and the other to the ground...
You now have a ramp the mice can easily walk up once they smell the peanuts on the soda bottle.
Seeing and smelling those peanuts they'll want to snack on some so they jump onto the soda bottle. The bottle spins dumping them onto the anti- freeze on the bottom.
They'll swim around trying to get out but will eventually tire and drown.
The ethylene glycol will preserve them from decaying and smelling until you remove them. A wire mesh scoop works for that.
It is a highly effective device.
**Warning- Caution- Danger**
Please note: Ethylene glycol is highly poisonous and cats, dogs or other pets or animals will readily drink it if it is available to them. The "Worlds Greatest Mouse Control Device" as pictured above, should never be deployed in a space that is accessible to pets nor should it be used where stray animals or wildlife can access it. Only deploy it in a secure, enclosed structure like a shed or garage that only mice can get in.

That's a good one for those pesky squatters. I've used a variation on the theme for chipmunks. 5 gal bucket filled about half way with water. Pour a thick layer of sunflower seeds on top of water as they will float. Critters jump in for the seeds and drown in the water. I've used this one outside around the deck next to the garage. Totally safe for other animals and birds. You just need to empty to daily catch from the bucket. That same wire mesh scoop would work here or just use a retracting grab tool to fish the critters out each day.
I like the spinning bottle trick though and will have to try that one.

The Glycol is cruel. A caged trap I find is fare better then drown them. I feed mine to the Magpies (Bird) or to the Bluetongue Lizards. A far more natural way to get rid of mice.

I put dryer sheets in my cars before putting them up for the winter.
I put one one the carpet on each side front and rear, one on each inside the trunk, and one on each inside fender well under the hood. Also the car smells nice and fresh in the spring when I get them out.

My dad has been successfully doing EXACTLY this^^^^for many years. A couple years ago the chipmunks moved into my neighborhood and did some serious digging under my deck. I set up the sunflower seed pool and it worked like a charm. I've caught several mice that way too.

Any lizard big enough to eat a mouse would not be welcomed around my house.
Can anyone tell me how to get rid of moles in my friends yard? She has tried traps to mothballs-but she still has them. Any advice would be great. Have a Blessed Holiday season to all as well. I really like this post a lot for great tips and advice.

Well, my FIL would sometimes sit on his roof with a .22 rifle and watch for movement in the back yard lawn. Somehow I think it was more for the fun of trying to hit one than ever effective at controlling the population. They seem like hard critters to actually control.

You need to kill off the grubs and bugs in the yard so the moles don't have anything to eat.

There are many folklore methods to get rid of moles. However, moles normal life pattern of periods of intense burrowing activity followed by periods of inactivity tends to lead to many false claims of success.

Thomas, With the Hot Rod Power Tour coming to Champaign, Il. are you thinking of joining in for part of the tour? Or do you plan to be to busy showing off the fruits of your labor and building the new house?
P.S. I have started the rebuild on the CMB (Cabinet Makers Bench), it was in very rough shape, but I believe I'll be able to bring most of it back to life other than the legs and the center board for the top. I'll post some pictures when I take some when the sun is up.

Hello Nursepeter1973 and warm greetings to you good sir. I've been gone on a multi-day road trip so I'm a little late responding. You know, I'm really not quite sure how this thread got so long, it just sort of creeped up us I guess. I do want to thank you for persevering through it all. Your reward for doing that will be when Chris rolls out her thread test. You are now positioned to do very well on it.
I think you are correct from your link to Google Maps, Leinster is truly remote. To really get a feel for how remote you are I used the satellite option and then zoomed out. Small town with not a whole lot of green in the surrounding countryside and a really, really, really long way from anywhere.
I'm not sure how many of you are following this thread in Australia but I suspect you're right up there with the fellows in the UK for numbers. I'm honored to include you in our group here. Wish you could stop by for a visit sometime.Thomas

It's almost Christmas eve and I was driving by the shop. On a hunch I decided to peek into a window of the lift room because I've been especially good this year and......
...after what I saw inside, I just had to rush home to get Chris to come and see for herself.
I couldn't believe it, right there on the lift, beyond the crooked switch plate cover...
...LOOK, all covered up...
..was something wrapped up with ribbons and a big red bow! It even had "thingies" hanging out of the bottom!
Why it even had our names on it!!!!!!!!!!!
Santa must have come a bit early this year. Now I know I've been especially good but hummmmmmm, I wonder just what is under there............Chris tells me I'll have to wait just a little while longer!

Merry Christmas. Can't believe I never checked this thread out earlier and to think I drive through Philo almost once a week. The shop is absolutely beautiful

Thanks everyone for the nice holiday wishes. As you can imagine, sleeping was difficult for me Christmas Eve knowing Santa had paid an early visit out at the shop. Next morning once I was at the shop and after I managed to unwrap my present out there...
...this is what I found under the all the wrapping, ribbons and bow.
As you know I believe in love at first sight, and, well.........it was!! Chris understood completely.
3,799 Stingrays were painted Milano Maroon in 1966; this is one of them.
It was a southern car for the vast majority of it's life.
It is rust free and clean as a whistle top to bottom, front to back.
It has an L-79, 327/350 engine just like the Chevy II. Equipped with power steering and brakes plus...
...if you didn't notice...
...it has ice cold factory air conditioning. Chris will really appreciate that.
After all I want my sweetie to be comfortable.
It's been said maroon over a saddle interior is arguably one of the nicer Corvette color combinations for 1966.
I would have to agree with that.

1966 A/C coupe, small block and side pipes, too cool. Can't beat that color. Most of the vettes I've seen that color had black interior.
My brother had a 66 coupe, 390 horse, 427 with side pipes and A/C back in 1970. It was gold with gold interior.
I was trying to buy it when I got drafted so my brother ended up with it.
