Glad to see a nice update.

I'm a huge vinyl fan, and own a few turntables myself. Tell us what that setup consists of?

My only critisism would be the speakers up top there on the shelf. I fear vibrations from those will compromise your vinyl playback, not to mention terrible soundstaging and stereo image issue.

Do you have no space to better position them, or was that the best possible fit?

Knowing you, you have considered all options and decided that this compromise works best for you...

Regards from wintery South Africa. Wouldn't say so looking at the weather though - sunny blue skies! And we need rain desperately...

The solar eclipse on Monday, August 21, is best seen in southern IL near Carbondale, but, we're fairly close to the path (a couple 100 miles north).

For Urbana-Champaign, IL, the eclipse will start at 11:53:30 am (central time). It will reach a maximum of 93% blocked by 1:20:37pm. It is all over at 2:44:56pm. The best time to look will be as close to the maximum, since it will be the largest difference. Please make sure to have approved viewing glasses while attempting to watch the eclipse.

According to Parkland College planetarium staff, "the 2017 eclipse is especially unique because of the uninterrupted land masses it will pass over. The path of totality will start in OR before making its way across the country; it will cut through 14 states in total, finally finishing up in SC."

I'm hoping for clear weather here in the COTU during this rare, in our lifetime, occurrence. If it's cloudy, it will be especially dark, so be careful.

Enjoy the show.

Chris

Chris, as an ex-teacher I'm sure you'll agree with me that it's hard to see how something can be "especially unique"! A bit like "To infinity, and beyond".

Yes, Pete (stillp), I agree the "especially unique" phrase the planetarium staff used to hype the eclipse is a bit over the top. People use adverbs such as this (including 'very' and 'extremely') too often, thinking it will enhance the noun or verb or phrase... Since retiring, I haven't thought about this as much as when I was teaching English composition.

Chris

P.S. I try not to read (for pleasure or otherwise) with a red pen to mark typos.

As you probably know I flew for Continental Airlines for almost 29 years, retiring on the Boeing 767 in 2013. (BB767)

If you squint real hard at the base of the model, you'll see that DC 10 was presented to me by Continental Airlines in 1990. Somehow I was selected as Continental Airlines Employee of the Month

Thats awesome. Sorry, I'm late to the thread, so I didn't pick up on your previous experience. Did you fly all of the submodels? (300er/400er)

I found it better to mark typos with a pencil. The library staff don't get quite so annoyed.

Oh, yes. We were on the dark side of the moon, for sure! The cicada's thought it was sundown and sang very loud, as they do every night. Then they grew quiet as the sun came out again. It was also significantly cooler during this time. Our area was at 95%, so we saw very defined crescents as the moon passed over the sun during the 1+ hour of viewing. Some places in the path of totality experienced increase wind, but we didn't. We had appropriate eclipse viewing "glasses" and also watched live feed on our computer from other areas of the country. Looking forward to 2024, so we'll save the "glasses". They're a penny a dozen because the market is now flooded.LOL I'm so glad our clouds cleared during the eclipse. It's thundering and raining now (1am).

Morning from England Chris and Thomas,

I watched it from my sofa, on the telly box news programme.

People really enjoyed it.

Dennis in O'Fallon Missouri also shared it with me.

Maybe it's time we came back to check out your progress at the house. :D

Just let us know when you plan a return trip and we'll put it on our calendar. There aren't as many odd bits to pick through since all the put buildings were removed, but lots of other progress has been made. I'm just glad all the grass we planted is doing well. I've had my fill of that. LOL I'm still looking for things that are hidden in boxes somewhere - if only I could find the boxes! Things will settle into their places one of these days. There's no real rush.

Updates Coming.....

It's been awhile any updates?

Everyone here have to be the most patient folks in the world! I'll admit it has be far too long since I've posted here. The weather has been delightful and I've been working outside quite a bit. I have dozens and dozens of pictures to post. I've been waiting for a crummy weather day to do it and that hasn't happened.

Lou and I have been to Bonneville and back, top speed we observed there was Poteet and Main @ 459 mph. George Poteet was smoking when he drove by us out on the long course. We were on the starting line (we were just to the left of the camera man in the below video), when Danny Thompson broke his record from last year...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=47&v=Qra--ioxFC4

...running 435 mph this year.

We crewed on a couple of Roadster Club members vehicles, the 1931 Ford roadster only managed 215 mph and the street bike I was crew chief on for ...

...club member Steve Chappell, ran 194 mph. The above is an old picture from 2015 but the bike looks the same. I have current pictures that I'll get on here.

Lou and I also have done some additional work on Gus, the 1948 Jeep shop pickup truck that I'll update.

Last week I got the 3,000 pound bolder re-positioned that the house street numbers will be etched on. The week before that I finished some rock placement for the basement sump discharge pipe. Yesterday I installed the stainless steel chimney rain cap finally after a bit of delay. That turned into a bit of a goat rope after it was manufactured incorrectly and had to be re-sized in the field. Saturday I'm trenching a tile line in the front yard to aid in drainage there.

I'm going now to help a neighbor with some stump grinding so I'll cut this a little short. I've got all the above posts in mind and will answer questions from them, and promise to include pictures of the various tool box contents as requested. Don't give up on me yet! Thanks everyone. :)

Hey Thomas - Thanks for the update. I was thinking of you folks when I read about the return road wreck. There was just enough detail published for me to know that you weren't directly involved but I was (and, still am) concerned about the impact it may have had on you and others at the event.

8 years, 550 pages and almost 11K posts...

I just started reading the process and am hooked like a crackhead. made it to made page 160 before calling it quits last night.

The work is phenomenal but the intake story nearly brought a tear to my eye. good for you man, there are very few decent human beings left in the world that aren't focus on money and greed. I frequent chicago quite a bit and will have to buy ya a round the next time I'm out that way.

I'm an old mustang nut, but brand loyalty isn't much to me. I tow my 66 all over the country racing with a silverado. lol

Still making progress around the homestead. Updates sometime in the future. Tom has a drag race soon. His work around the house is ongoing. I'm still involved with our apartments and my work for various volunteer committees. Not much time for sitting and doing updates.

Thanks for continuing to check in.

Hi rjsandiego! Tell Yoli hi and her drain board is on the way with Lou.

We are definitely missing Lou!! And he's missing Custard Cup!

Tom's at Stanton, MI, drag races (PSMCDR for those who like acronyms). I'm doing apartment work (painted two bathroom ceilings today and will put on a second coat tomorrow), while Tom's relaxing after getting footings dug and poured in preparation for building the wall around the back-up generator. Not to mention prepping to install a concrete pad for the firewood and garbage can. Then getting his car loaded to leave for a well deserved rest in MI until Saturday night.

Lou was right in the thick of all the work which Tom will update when he returns. I think Lou dug more ditches this summer than he has in his entire life! Lou is getting lots more rest on his long drive home than he got while he was here. He has a large stake in our new home, having put in lots of work over the past 2 summers. I try to provide some passable meals when I'm home.

The plan is to see you in March (or whenever the SDRC has the awards banquet).

I've gotten tons of "stuff" done some of which is installing the chimney rain-cap...

...installing the standby power generator...

...got a bunch of more work accomplished with Gus...

...Lou and I went to Bonneville again (this TR4 just drove in from Colorado)...

...did some additional concrete work and went drag racing where I qualified and ran against...

...this gorgeous 1968...

...Dodge Hemi Charger. Small block vrs big block.

Those are just a smattering of items I still need to post about. More is in store so check back and don't give up on me yet! :)

Morning Thomas,

Great to see you surface.

I am sure you will catch up some time.

As you know, I just got back from the USA as well last week.

I am almost done, have 15 or so photos of over 430 left to post and write up about this trip.

Got to meet and go for drives over two days with **** "The Bandit" Valenzuela one of the Valenzuela Brothers who held class records in the '70's at Bonneville. (Thanks to Steve Hansen "Bib Overalls") in Jonesboro, Arkansas.

What a pleasure and privilege.

Still driving hard and building cars at 79

You've been busy having fun.
You know we like lots of detail and pics when you are able to share.
What image host do you use?

I use Photobucket and as you might know they have changed their policies and pricing. My current account expires in December. After that they want close to $400 to allow me to continue 3rd party hosting.

I haven't found any other image hosting companies that will work here at Garage Journal. I am completely open to any and all suggestions for a way to post pictures other than Photobucket. Posting them from my computer only allows them to be posted at the bottom of a post and not embedded within the post itself. The good folks here at Garage Journal haven't any solutions for me. What does anyone suggest?

All ears Thomas

When you upload them directly via "manage attachments" you can indeed place them into the thread. After closing the upload window, you right click the image address from below the edit box, copy, then with the cursor where you want the image in the post you click on the "Insert Image" icon and paste what you copied. The small image will still be at the bottom but a large image will be in the text. Thanks, JB, for showing me this. Re-referencing the old photos is tougher, I had a white knight do that for me. But there is a new thread on Photobucket with a link which may help.

I use imgur. Totally free, and there's only limitations on size of individual files which is I think 20mb per picture, which you can easily stay under.

I hope the images in this fantastic thread are not lost like they have been in other threads on the internet. Photobucket's ransom is unacceptable.

Restored 1930's Auto Shop Will Continue

We are not about to lose this entire thread are we??

Not if I can help it Tim. Without the numerous pictures, this thread would loose much of its relevance.

Once I figure out how to post pictures here without Photobucket I plan to go back to all 550 pages to edit and re-post all those hundreds of pictures. I need to get started on that soon since the mid-Dec deadline is approaching.

Yeah, it's going to take some time but I'm willing to do it. Everyone here has been so supportive of my efforts I feel an obligation to all of you. You've never let me down- always supportive (even when I couldn't install a square switch plate cover!!) and I don't want to let you down either.

Does imgur Work To Post Pictures On Garage Journal?

I use imgur. Totally free, and there's only limitations on size of individual files which is I think 20mb per picture, which you can easily stay under.

My daughter is helping me try to convert from Photobucket to another hosting service. She wanted to use imgur but couldn't get it to work on the Garage Journal forum. If it does work here I'll have her take a look at it again and see what we can do. Thanks.

Maybe the folks that own the Garage Journal could step up and offer some insight. If this thread gets damaged, they get damaged too. It's to their advantage if they help figure this problem out. I hope they are reading this.
