Tom,

BS 1.0 is on the way to Caddyman as of today. Enjoyed the book immensely and have ordered a copy for myself. My apologies to everyone for the long wait as life got in the way.

This and That

Very Very Nice ! A couple period gas pumps would be a nice touch. Was it ever a Filling station ?

I agree it would be fun to have pumps out there, but I'm afraid it's a little too close to the road out front, so I've got one out by the barn instead.

It has never been a gas station to my knowledge and certainly not in my lifetime. I've been going out there as a kid since 1961 and it always was a welding and auto repair business with a little bee keeping thrown in among other endeavors.

O thread worth of Discovery Channel show!
Love it.

It might have made an interesting show........for a while anyway. Thanks for the thought.

I just found this thread recently and I'm 50 pages into it. Only 513 more to go! Just so you know I usually skip right through threads this big and try to get the high points but what you're doing is just so fantastic I've been reading every page.
My hats off to you sir on doing such fine work.

Well there you go devans522. You are proof positive that the Vortex is alive and well and going strong here in the Center Of The Universe. Welcome my friend and enjoy your time here.

No worries James, it's all good. Thanks for the update and PM to me. I think you'll like the copy you ordered. The 2nd printing has some corrections made in the editing and uses much better quality paper. Author Cary Thomas said he only had about 20 copies left of the 2nd printing when Chris and I saw him last month.

1949 caddyman, you're in for a treat!

Award Winning Restored 1930's Auto Shop

Here's a quick update on some of the latest out here.

I'm setting up the Yates American Jointer in the basement wood shop so......... I rolled the engine hoist from the barn to the garage, placed it on the material life and brought it down to the basement. It worked perfectly to lift the jointer table supports into position. They weigh a few hundred pounds...

...far more than I could safely lift and position by myself while they were bolted into place.

By using the material lift and engine hoist...

...I was able to accomplish all this by myself...

...easily and safely. The in-feed and out-feed tables which are placed on the support table are next. Stand by.

The fireplace mantle, remember the fireplace mantle....:dunno:

...got its first coat of Watco Danish Oil. I used the natural oil seen on the left.

You can see how the grain is highlighted with natural oil.

Here's a close up of some of the mill work detail. This was taken a few minutes after the oil was applied so disregard the quality of the finish. Once it dries, I'll lightly sand with 400 grit sandpaper and apply another coat. I expect to apply 4-6 coats depending how it goes. Stand by for that as well.

More is coming this way, I just haven't had the time to upload the pictures. Thanks everyone. :)

I love Danish Oil too, especially in Natural, as it really does expose and bring out in massive detail the woods character

And yes, 4-6 coats sound about right.

The killing is beautiful, in fact I find myself sometimes touching some of the milling on some of the furniture I have around the house.

Thanks for the update Thomas.

Loved reading the book. There was so many similarities to my life, go karts, working at a

Shell gas station, ( I still have one of the steak knifes, photo enclosed ), gear head, now have a newer Corvette etc.

Thomas, how did you come to find this book? I’m glad you did!

Yea, read it in a day!

Yea, read it in a day!

One night one of the guys I frequently flew to Sáo Paulo, Brazil with...

....mentioned he owned a Corvette and we launched into a long discussion on all things Corvette en route. He's the one who suggested I read Beltsville Shell. I did so and I loved it. Like you I found many similarities and enjoyed the way Cary told the story.

It occurred to me that many of my friends here might also like it, so I recommended it here in a post. Mike Oberst came up with the suggestion of sharing a single copy once each reader had finished reading it and pass that same copy around. That was about 5 years ago and several thousand flight miles and the "Brotherhood Of The Traveling Book" (BOTTB) is still going strong. I think were approaching over 70 or so readers. Fun stuff!

Snap-On red. I want to add, I thought about trying to get on the list so I could read the book "Beltsville Shell". I then decided I would rather have my very own copy. Well,,, my copy arrived in the mail today. On the 1st page there was a message and I quote; "March 2013 Larry - I hope you enjoy this book! Cary" That's right,,, it was signed by the author! How cool was that? I'm sure I can relate to everything in this book even though I spent most of the 60's in the Marine Corps. The book was dedicated to "Larry" and my name is Calvin. Oh well, everything can't be perfect.

Without choosing specific color(s) I think that safety conscious Thomas has considered safety related colors.

My copy arrived today but no notes in it. The seller was "Beltsville Shell" so I hope the money went to Cary.

I'll go with Army Green, like Gus.

If we get the color wrong, does that mean we buy Thomas (and Chris) dinner?

Additionally, on page 115 there was a post-it note in Cary's hand writing that said "Suggestion: read "car trouble" first. Every word is true!" Very cool and I will follow the directions. I would gladly buy Chris and Thomas dinner for the reading enjoyment they have provided in this thread over these past few years.

I'm curious, was your book a "pre-owned" copy? It didn't come directly from Cary like that did it?

You are really going to enjoy the book, I can tell already.

BTW, thank you for your service with the Marines.

Yup, Cary's seller's name is "Beltsville Shell" and those funds do indeed go to him. He's needs all he can get to make up for all the lost sales from B.S. 1.0 thanks to Mike for his great idea!!

Thomas; yes it was pre-owned. My search was for book sellers and not for Beltsville Shell. My bad. I was after the most direct route to obtain a copy. Now I have mixed feelings. I would have preferred the money went to the author and at the same time I'm happy I got a copy that has "history".

I'll go with basic black to hide any dirt and/or grease that may get on it.
That way he can put off cleaning it for 3 minutes or so before it starts gnawing at him. :shocking:

Sounds like we need to do a B.S. 1.0 reunion after the reading club has run its course! Maybe have a reunion on each continent! (if we find time in our busy retirement to cross the east and west ponds) (or maybe we can all meet at Cary's place so that everyone will have to travel and/or be inconvenienced - for the greater good, that is!) Oh, but that means you guys won't get to experience the vortex and the yummy food at the Philo Tavern. I'll have to think about that. Maybe a road trip after the reunion - on Route 66 from California to Illinois. After all, Route 66 starts in IL and ends in CA. Makes sense to me! (I haven't consulted Cary and Nan, so I expect to hear a loud "Noooooooo!" about this spectacular idea. Maybe I'll have to go there to do the planning to help pay them back for the lost book revenue. Oh, oh. There goes my retirement check!) (this was all a dream, so ....)

As for the winner of the lift powdercoating color contest, stay tuned! The lift looks great, btw. Tom says it was well worth the effort.
