Lift Powder Coat Color Contest (LPCCC) Winner

We have winner! It's too late to post it tonight, I'm pooped.......again! Picked it up this morning and then spend all afternoon and a good part of the evening getting it re-assembled and installed. Boy was that ever rewarding and fun though. I've been thinking about the lift for the then, future new house for a very, very long time..........and yes, it's looks simply, splendid. :D

Stand by........

spdster - there were definitely no suggestions on my part for the powdercoating color. It's not my equipment to use or comment on. Totally Thomas' arena.

rlwhitetr3b - wouldn't that be fun to have "local" gj/Restored 1930s Auto Shop visitors get together? Great Idea! I don't have any idea how many are within a 30 mile radius (other than you and Craig, who we've met several times), but it could work. It's kind of like making the pilgrimage to the Beef House in Indiana, just over the state line from us. But better because we have property and "stuff" to look at before and after dinner.

1949 caddyman - Philo Tavern is a great place. We prefer locally owned places over chains. You don't get chain sit-down restaurants in small towns. We don't drink so we're definitely not the people to ask. I have no idea what's on tap or in bottles other than Blue Moon because friends seem to order that.

I'm starting to like my idea of regional reading club reunions. I'll have to work on that....

Have a happy Easter everyone.

LOL Chris - why did you assume I was talking about you? You must be a fan of English TV - to get that idea.

Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner!!!!!

Chain fall yellow to match the chain fall of course. It is after all a part of the larger assembly.

I agree with this. Looks to be a yellow-orange maybe? :dunno:

Some great color suggestions. Thanks all for your ideas.

I'd say we have co-winners here. gasgas17 had the right idea referring to matching the lift to the color of the hoist (chain fall)...

...except I would call that orange, not yellow.

Thirdyfivepickup was the first person to actually use the color orange, even though he referred to it as a yellow-orange. I will give them both credit since the color may appear differently on their computer monitors and my idea was to try to reasonably coordinate the color of the lift with that of the hoist.

That said...

...here it is and this is how it was installed.

It had to be raining the day I brought it back home, right?
At least the John Deere had a roof so I stayed reasonably dry.

The platform itself is around 500 lbs (227 kg).

Once the uprights were assembled, the pallet under the platform was removed and the structure placed on 1 1/2" (3.8 cm) diameter PVC pipe.

Here's a better look at the idler rollers.

Idler rollers provide a contact area on 2 surfaces. The face of the roller...

..and the side of the roller.

The idler roller bracket is bolted to the side of the platform. The large surface facing the camera is the skid plate.

These are the tracks the rollers move in or are "captured" in. Everything associated with the lift was powder coated the same color, the area lighting just makes it appear a different shade.

This is how the 2 opposing idler rollers are "captured" in the tracks, limiting side movement of the platform in 3 directions. The skid plates limit movement in a 4th direction.

The platform was rolled into place on the PVC pipe, it needed to lifted up high enough to remove the wood floor below it. To do that I had to rig up spacers on the lift beam to gain enough clearance between the wood floor and the bottom of the platform.

With the wood floor gone the lift was lowered into the basement and the lift beam re-assembled...

... into it's permanent position.

So here we are, glistening in powder coated glory. The lift itself is done, I still need to harden the bottom of the walls around the lift and fabricate and install a way to hold the lift hand control and the control's power cord. If you're at all still interested, stand by for those details.

Congratulations to gasgas17 and Thirdyfivepickup. To collect on free lunch at the...

...send me a PM and I'll make it happen. This offer is good indefinitely so whenever you find yourself in the area, be that several years from, just let me know.

Meantime Rich, lets see if we can't get together with you for lunch too!

See, this thread just keeps on giving and after 565 pages (of which I have read each and every one), It's given me a free lunch! At only 2758 kms away, I can tell you it's quite an honor. I'm not sure when or what mode of transportation I will arrive by, but I intend to graciously collect my prize! It could be a week long road trip. Thank you Thomas and Chris! I look forward to meeting you both.

Congratulations to Thirdyfivepickup and gasgas17. We look forward to providing lunch for you both sometime in the future at the Philo Tavern. And to have Rich join us will be a bonus!

I think we have another relatively new thread member who needs to do a more thorough study of the thread to prep for the test. I won't mention any names, but s/he knows who I mean. Just a gentle reminder. And it's all fun - even the eventual test! (You guys think I'm joking about the test. It's really a QUEST (quiz-test). If you've been reading the entire thread, you'll be prepared enough to do well.) (The traveling book club reunion is NOT a substitute for the Quest. Hmmmm, maybe I can incorporate the Quest into the traveling book club reunions!?)

Please put me on the list, I'm over in Monticello, IL. I have driven by your place while passing through, but have yet to stop. Maybe someday soon.

Beltsville Shell Is On The Move....Again

I just got word that rixtrix1 has finished reading BS and it's now en-route to JB in Oklahoma. He's the last reader in the US before it heads back up north to Canada, just in time for spring.

Here's the list as of today, April 5, 2018

jbmatth- Northern Ok.
eseibel67- Kitchener, ON Canada
Pensive Scribe- Alberta, Canada

If no others wish to read it at this time, after Pensive Scribe is done, he'll be sending it back to me. If you've thought about reading it, now would be an excellent time to get on the list.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch...

...take a wild guess what I'm up to now?! :)

Thanks everyone.

You just knew there's be an eventual payoff when you started reading the thread, didn't you gasgas17? As the time approaches and your plans finalize, send me a PM and we'll work out the details. We both look forward to meeting you as well!

Will do Derek. I think we should have a local gathering of folks who live nearby, there are a few. I think it'd be a lot of fun for all. As a thought, early June weather is some of the best of the year around here.

Hahahaha I never win anything! I'm 2 1/2 hours away... but I'll make it happen. Does the free lunch come with a tour of the compound?

Ohhhhhhh, compound, I've never thought of it that way. Yeah, that's it, our compound :) and yes the win sure does come with a tour.

Look at your calendar and since you're one of the winners, we'll do our best to accommodate your schedule. Since you live in the relative neighborhood, you'd agree, think warmer, dry weather in the weeks ahead when planning the visit. For each winner, the free lunch is for 2, so your significant other is more than welcome.

We'll see if rlwhitetr3b and KST1 - Derek - can come as well.

Congratulations Thirdyfivepickup, on your win! Well done sir!

Shameless plug for our car club's new show (Savoy Car & Truck Show) in Savoy, IL, on Sunday, April 22 - 10:30am-2pm. The show will go on Rain or Shine!

Vehicles must be 25 years or older (pre-1994) to be eligible for judging in a variety of categories. Newer cars are also welcome to show, but are not eligible for awards (title must read pre-1994). The mayor of Savoy will be presenting a Mayor's Choice Trophy after reviewing the entries.

For those of you who are local, the show is at Worden-Marten Buick GMC in Savoy, IL. So far, Salad Meister and Kona Ice are confirmed to be on site. There are also many restaurants nearby. We have a local DJ who will MC during the awards. (Listen to ESPN93.5 FM radio in CU for promotional ads.) Spectators are welcomed and it's FREE to walk through the show. The owners love to talk to people about their rolling art/rolling history!

We share 1/2 the show car entry fees with Cunningham Children's Home (CCH) in Urbana. CCH has been our club's nonprofit charitable partner for about 12 years. We have another show in August from which all the proceeds go to CCH.

Look us up on our Facebook page -
https://www.facebook.com/Illini-Collector-Car-Club-ICCC

ICCC was established in 1961, originally a chapter of the Horseless Carriage Society, as an Illinois not-for-profit corp with an education mission. We take our charter seriously, informing people about automotive history and its impact on society.

Anyway, anyone who's nearby can join in the fun to see some of what keeps me busy!

Well sure Denny, you'd be welcome as well. Once Thirdyfivepickup figures out the date that's best for him, we'll make sure to put the word out. It promises to be quite a fun event.

Thomas, you are tig welding a crowd barrier to hold back the gate crashers when you and the winner visit the Philo Tavern! I hope my envy is not showing too much.

Perhaps it can then be used as a safety gate round the top of the lift hole when the lift is not in use or around the area below the lift when it is in use. I am sure you can add micro switches to the operating circuit so the motor will only run when the barriers are closed.

Thanks for all your interesting posts.

Thomas,
I've heard from rixtrix1 and look forward to reading it, I have eseibel67's information and will try to get it out to him as soon as I'm finished.

Enjoying the projects and looking forward to more,

David it's uncanny how you got that all correct. Right down to the 2ndry use after the crowd control barrier as a lift safety gate, micro switches and all! You have a gift of mind reader no doubt............

Oh wait a minute, that's not right, well the TIG welding part is, but the rest, not so much. It does, however, involve powder coating. ;)

Thomas, your not the only person who is keen on powder coating.

I have my own set up. It is just for smaller parts as I only use a halogen oven for curing. I generally prep with caustic soda then citric acid first.

Frame for a hanging swing or hammock?

Looks like the bottom is set into the ground so it won't be blown away.

We need videos of the lift in action, Thomas!

Well not a video but here's the lift in action.

This is the in-feed table for the Yates-American Jointer.

I'm using a 2 wheel dolly to move it. All cast steel, it weights a couple of hundred pounds and is about 4' tall. Shown is the bottom side. Note all the X bracing cast into it to ensure rigidity and prevent warping of the table.

Once it's centered on the platform, just pushing the down button...

...down I go into the basement. Smooth and sure. A video of it operating might be kind of boring. All the platform does is go up and down. Not very exciting but then when I'm moving hundreds of pounds of equipment I don't want exciting. I very much want boring. ;)

Thomas, Was that your look on your first commercial flight?

My first commercial flight was with Cpt.Tim Hopkins, flying a Swearingen Metroliner (SA226TC) like this one...

...over 30 years and 22,000 flight hours ago.

I remember that flight well. When I sat down in that seat for my first commercial flight I had finally realized a dream come true. Tim was a kind soul who put me at ease right away. Was I intense, you bet I was! While I may not have been the best first officer on my first flight, I was determined there wouldn't be anybody any better.

I hadn't thought about Tim and those Metro's in a long time. Young and getting paid to fly airplanes. It didn't get any better than that. :)

Holy ****. That lift is huuuuuge! I really thought it was like half that size!

Surprise!!!!! It had to be huuuuuge to move the equipment. :)

That's one of the cabinetmaker's bench tops getting ready to go down. Note the person standing behind it to steady it.

So I was on Google maps checking up on the Center of the Universe, and was severely disappointed in that it was an old picture.
The original house was still there and no concrete on the new driveway.

Someone at Google needs fired.
