Made it to SLC today and will be out there tomorrow. I’ll look for the DLRA shirt and press vests or try to contact Thomas by phone.

What fun having gj members at both our vintage racing venue (as a participant) and at BSF Speed Week!

Chris

Sitting in the Hotel in Salt lake City and we just discovered we left the Vegemite at home. Greg with me will be wearing a D.L.R.A. shirt. I will also be looking for a couple of teams from Connecticut. I also expect Graffiti Publications may have Press Vests and they will know how to find me. We will not get to Wendover until tomorrow night.

Oh no! Forgot the vegemite. :shocking:

Spending the afternoon on the salt, or in the brine I could say. Pretty wet and slushy in the pits but still great seeing the vehicles, reconnecting with friends from last year and getting in the mood. To me it looks doubtful for racing tomorrow but waiting on the official word. Still just great to be here and will keep looking for the DLRA team or Graffiti Publications tomorrow. Safe travels to Wendover.

Chris, I did get to meet and talk with Thomas and Lou today. It was great to see their friendly faces again and catch up on GJ and Bonneville happenings. I told him how you were the perfect Communications Director keeping us all updated from around the world when phones don’t always work. Thanks for your help.

Lots of wetness out there today. No racing tomorrow but maybe by Sunday. Everyone say a prayer for constant breeze to blow across the salt and dry it off.

I managed to phone Thomas a couple of times yesterday and our Dinner at the Casino was very slow. Finally got to meet Thomas and we sat in the truck at the Casino parking lot and talked GJ, Bonneville Salt Racing along with 1/2 Cup. Traveling in a group of four makes setting up meetings with others just a little awkward and as I had not found Thomas on the Salt I appreciated him meeting up with me as we did as I know he has been busy with his volunteer duties at the event.

Chris, I gave Thomas a little bag of goodies and inside it is one little item for you.

Very good that you guys got to actually meet up. If racing had started, it may not have happened.

Tom says that Tuesday the racing will begin at 7:30am, but only using the long course. Cars running under 175mph will run to the 4-mile marker, faster cars will run the full 5 miles.

Good luck to everyone! Save the Salt!!!

Chris

P.S. Simon, thanks in advance for my little surprise.

Well, at least you fulfilled part of your list of activities, Simon. Meeting up with Tom and Lou and 1/2 CUp! What luck! I'm so glad the stars aligned for that. Sorry about Mother Nature keeping things too wet for the salt to cooperate for racing while you were there. At least you can say you made it to the BSF, though, where Burt Munro ran his motorcycle in the past. Hallowed ground, for sure. (Lou was there back in Burt's time.)

Safe travels home.

Chris

P.S. I know what "mates" means. But it's a mystery why females are called "shielas".

Why are females called Shielas? Because that is better than calling them Ralph! Sorry I couldn't resist!:lol_hitti

Shirley you jest, TR6SR650.lol

Chris

P.S. Lou's car passed tech yesterday (we had no doubt it would). I wish I could post a picture of Lou sitting in his car (about 50 years after he made his record-breaking runs in it). He can get in and out no problem (a requirement if he is going to drive it). Then Lou was going to do a shakedown run today (I'll hear something tonight). Wednesday is going to be soooo exciting watching him race down the track set aside for vehicles running under 175mph. They'll run to the 4-mile marker. Faster cars will run the full 5 miles.

This is truly a remarkable story of Lou and his car. I'm not sure if the 1953 Bonneville car is the current car, but it's definitely a car Lou built and raced to several land speed records in several categories.

Look for an article in the November 1963 Hot Rod Magazine: Lou Bingham's Lakes Rod Feature

Below is a link about Lou and his car getting ready for Bonneville back in 1953 (From Just a Car Guy, June 29, 2016):

I’m so glad for Lou. Only sorry I won’t see it in person. Had to leave for home Monday afternoon but will look forward to the final story here.

We got to see some racing before we left to go back to LA. Chris I reckon you must be one pretty good shiela or Thomas would not be with you. As for Burt we did talk about not praying to the Gods of Speed for the right weather. Phoned a friend last night and they fell short of there own record due to poor track and the track was closed about 3.

In LA and fly home Thursday.

Chris and Tom, I have been reading this thread from A-Z or maybe from 1-11821 (posts), I have let it take the time it needed because there have been many interesting tings to read and think about. Tom you really can tell a story in an entertaining and educating way. And the input from Chris really gives insights into the process. Thanks for all before, during and after pictures. A big thank you for the effort giving measurements in both feet and meters, pounds and kilos.

Sorry for a long post, but I think you will be proud looking back.

Some highlights:

Of course the shop itself is a pearl. All posts about building your new home was interesting. The Walker jack , the Eco Air meters. Lots of fun and interesting stories from many people. And about many fantastic people like Mr Johnson, Bob Valentine and Earl

And some moments that I have found nice, entertaining, educating or just plain memorable

It was a true powerful moment when I read about Mrs Johnsons reaction about that sign.

Some of your posts is pure humor.

The wood bench is a master piece, but I really likes the steel benches, maybe because of the bench my father made for me, in blue painted steel and with hardened Masonite on top of some planks.

To learn a little about bookbinding is never wrong. Part 1, Part 2, Part 3

Your reportage from the Amish butcher blocks manufacture was interesting and showing me things about something I did not know much about. Part 1, Part 2

The repair of the driver seat is only one example of the attention to detail that makes the thread so entertaining

And an insight in the work of a pilot Part 1, Part 2

Learning small things like repairing an old bracket.

Some nice pictures from a stone mason shop.

And from that granite quarry and stone yard. Part 1, Part 2

And then there was a whole house built. Impressed!

Helping others while making new friends. Part 1, Part 2

Moving houses. Part 1, Part 2

Some sweets

And at last a finished house... Part 1, Part 2

But wait! There is more!
Some small projects outdoors and indoors. Part 1, part 2

Some comparisons between now and then

And seeing an old friend taking care of an old friend

Priceless

I have had fun seeing you all have fun and I will continue following your projects here.

Tom and Lou left BSF around 5pm Wednesday (today). I project their arrival in the COTU to be around Midnight Thursday. That matches the timetable for their COTU-to-BSF last Tuesday/Wednesday. We'll see how things go.

Safe travels everyone.

Regrets HOTFR8 that I did not get to meet and at least shake your hand. Especially since you made the trip here. Glad some other GJ members like Don Long, Thomas and Lou got to meet you. It’s hard to find people on the salt when everyone is busy and on the move. Hope you have had a good trip here to the US and safe travels home. Thanks for all you do for the GJ. It’s a great forum.

So good to see and catch up with Thomas and Lou a little. Wishing safe travels for them back to COTU and look forward to their reflections of Speed Week 2019.

See you next year on the salt!

Back From Bonneville 2019

Hi again everyone. Lou and I got home about 05:30 AM this morning after driving straight home from Bonneville. It's good to be back in the COTU. I understand Chris has kept everyone somewhat informed while we were away.

Our local car club's annual car show, Motor Muster is tomorrow morning and I'm helping with that so another O'dark thirty get up for us. Once the dust settles and I'm better caught up, I've got loads of pictures and a story or two from the salt that I'll post in about. Needless to say, Lou was grinning from ear to ear the whole way home. :bounce: Thanks everyone.

Yes not easy and when you have 4 in a hire car you do not always get a say in where you go or what you can do.

Looking forward to see just what photos you have to share. Tell Lou I started last night finding some Aussie Bottle tops to send him. I had one beer in the fridge for when I got home.

Lou makes leather key rings like the one above, that incorporates a bottle cap, be it from a beer or soda pop (as shown) bottle.

I use my Virgil's Root Beer key ring for Gus, Naturally! Mr. Johnson would have liked that I think.

Lou is a man of many talents! :)

Getting There

Thanks for helping me out Mike with that link. I know I'm a little slow getting pictures on here. I have now downloaded, processed, resized and reviewed approximate 1,450 images from Bonneville 2019! With that done I can now start to form up a couple of posts on Lou's and my experience at Bonneville 2019. While you're waiting on that, for your consideration is the following.

Lou's car successfully ran multiple times despite challenging salt conditions.

Here's Lou's car in the mid 1960's. That's a much younger Lou getting suited up in orange on the right.

Here's his car over 50 years later, still running on the salt. Not wanting to jump ahead too far of the story I'll leave it at that for now. It was a Bonneville event that Lou will never forget, guaranteed!

BTW, his record of never spinning a car at Bonneville is still intact! :bounce:

Love these photos.

Craig and I land in St Louis next week Thursday at 5pm for two weeks, staying over and travelling with Dennis Jones again.

Part of the plan was to fly to Delvwr and then to drive out to the Salt.

Bucket list stuff of course.

But looks like we may head in a different direction and and get to George Poteets again.

Nothing cast in stone, ever.

The Garage Journal Salt Warriors should set up a meet and greet time and spot at Bonneville. That way everyone can find each other.

Bonneville is already on my bucket list, meeting the guys and gals would just be frosting.

Who Me Retired!!

Hi everyone. Simon is correct I've been swamped with projects here, but in a good way! Trust me, I haven't forgotten Route 66 pictures or Bonneville. Lou is back home, safe and sound after his drive of a lifetime and spending a wonderful summer here with us. We both agree it was perhaps the best we've had yet.

The weather here has been fantastic so I've been taking full advantage of it and Chris can tell you I'm usually beyond tired at the end of some very long days, but I am getting quite a bit done. My corn crop next door looks like a winner in every respect. I expect it to be ready for harvest in a couple more weeks. Car stuff, welding projects, all that and more is in store. Thank you all. :)

Not really retired Thomas

Hope all is well in Philo - Figured I'd bump this thread up for an update when I dug it up to find the Lincoln Bookbindery from way back. I've a book that needs some repair and recalled the discussion with Gus's manual - Hopefully they can help me out. Thanks for the reference!

Hello Fix Until Broke and thanks for update bump on this thread.

Chris Hohn the owner of the Lincoln Bookbindery should be able to get you fixed up in good shape. His work is impeccable. Let me know if you have any trouble contacting him.

Yes, all is more than well here in The Center Of The Universe! The both of us are just incredibly busy and we seem to like it that way. That's the biggest reason we haven't been posting in here. After a full day working on various projects, rather than spend a few hours in the evening posting, I'm actually relaxing. I know you and others will understand. As we get into winter weather I should start to get a bit more time free. I've virtually finished all my outside work for the year. Pictures to follow.
