Return/Exchange Policy at Home Depot

Has anyone been able to exchange or return a used power tool at Home Depot? Not sure what their official policy is, other than within 90 days from purchase.

I bought a Milwaukee M12 impact driver (bare tool) 2 weeks ago, and used it 3 times. This week they ran a promo for the M12 kit with a free 6.0ah battery. I was hoping to exchange my impact driver for the kit for the extra ~$100, but they wouldn’t do it. I wasn’t upset, it IS my fault for buying the tool in first place.

Just wondering if anyone had similar experiences there.

This ***** when a deal comes out right after you buy a product. I have found that most retailers will honor the deal if its within the return window. (Whatever their return policy is) If they wont honor the deal, and its still within the return window.... just claim that the tool is broken and needs to be returned. Then re-buy the tool at the deal price. If the return window has passed, you're probably out of luck...

I’ve only had it two weeks and driven a dozen screws with it. Still have the original box and receipt, but I made the mistake of being honest. Should’ve just told them it stopped working and they might’ve taken it.

Try a different location. Tell them there is something wrong with it, and return it for a full refund. You tried to go about this the "honest" way and it didnt work...

Edit: 2 weeks = 14 days.... I'm not sure what their return policy is on power tools but you may be past the return window anyway.

Ayuh. Tell them it didn’t work right. That you thought it would have more power. Probably get the money on a gift card.

I don't believe you have to tell them anything. If you do just tell them you weren't satisfied. I've never had any problem returning anything at HD.

I don't condone the responses above that are telling you to commit fraud. Cut wires? Really? Assuming I cared enough, what i'd do in this situation is buy the kit then flip the new tool on ebay. It will skim about $20 in fees and shipping but at least you wont be a scumbag.

Milwaukee has a 30 day satisfaction guarantee on most power tools. It’s printed right on the box and available online. No need to say it doesn’t work, just say you’re not satisfied.

If the purchase is within 30 days, you have the receipt and asked nicely. you can always ask for a Price Adjustment on your purchase, if the price dropped between those 30 days... This is standard for most box chain stores, I know I have done it in Costco (best warehouse to honor this), HD and Lowes ( that this dependent on the cashier).... But if it is something that is a mail in rebate promotion, but the store price didn't drop.... well. better be very very nice.

Its not a price match though. OP bought a bare tool and then the kit with batteries/charger went on promo. Two different SKU.

Proof? Sounds ludicrous to me and google-fu finds nothing. People would be buying tools, putting projects together then returning them for a full refund if they had that policy.

I can see it now

"Yes i'd like to return this impact driver I just built my deck with. I had to change the battery at the 299th screw and I'm just not satisfied it didn't make it at least until 300."

"Sure sir, here's all your money back and we'll throw that unsatisfactory piece of junk right in the new Milwaukee landfill out back."

I did once and told Customer Service Desk it didn't live up to the expectations as described. They refunded my money then I went a grabbed the kit.

Apparently that’s not good enough. If it isn’t broken, there’s nothing they can do. I’m going to a different store tomorrow.

I’ve never had a problem returning anything else at HD, including stuff that had no box or receipt. For this I have the receipt and packed it back up in the box including the plastic and everything and they wouldn’t take it.

Do you have the HD credit card? They told me once their return policy is more generous for those with the card...no time limit on returns, no receipt needed, etc.

The return window is one year with the credit card. I take advantage of this as I can buy what I think I may need for a project and take back what I do not use. Great for plumbing projects... or any project. Never had a problem taking anything back to HD.

Maybe smash the old one, scatter the remnants in dumpsters all over town, than claim it (and a few other items also) were stolen from your garage. Get your homeowner's insurance to pay for it. Buy some new toys.

Just kidding of course. But I used to know a guy who did scams like that all the time.

Got another HD near by? I am sure they don't make a note of refused returns. I had a Husky warranty claim that one branch refused to honor. I hit a nearby HD and got satisfaction. Go to plan B. If it is in the window, I don't think you need a reason other than you don't want it.

If you ever watch the Clearance tables it's clear the return policy varies. Probably depends how much money you spend there monthly. I frequently see returned tools that are SO used the markings are wore off.

I don't see it much any more at HD but they used to put out used stuff like pressure washers that looked like they fell off a truck and left to rust, usually with parts missing. They had the nerve to ask real money for them when they should have been paying somebody to take them to the junk yard.

I lean towards not sweating it and moving on with your life. You thought it was a fair enough deal when you bought it, so roll with it. Everyone saying to intentionally damage the tool and bring it back should be ashamed of themselves. That shows a lack of integrity.

Plan B:
Buy the new bundle. Take the brand new M12 impact and put it in the original box/manuals that came with the bare tool. (better be the same model number). Take it back with your original receipt within 30 days and get a refund.

Don't intentionally break the tool or commit fraud!

I agree completely. It was a good price two weeks ago, right? Otherwise you wouldn't have bought it.

They check the serial numbers so that doesn't work. And I'm far too honest to smash a perfectly good tool like that.

It is what it is, I wasn't mad when they declined the return and I'm still not upset. I just thought it was odd they wouldn't accept the return in the box with a receipt when I've never had an issue before returning items even without packaging or receipts.

Nothing against Milwaukee or Home Depot, they have policies they have to follow. I've worked both there and Lowes before, so I know how it is. Though I will say Lowes took back power tools all the time, both used or unused, without hassle.

These places would really take it up the ol' Hershey Highway if they were more liberal with their power tool return policies. Every cheapskate and his cousin would be "renting" their power tools to do projects then taking them back for a refund (even if there's a re-stocking fee because it'd still be cheaper than renting the tool).

I saw a shady looking couple returning some Bauer power tools at HF recently. I was behind them in line. "We changed our mind" when asked why they were being returned. Yeah more like "Ok, so we used the impact driver and recip saw to install that new patio deck; let's go get our money back!"

The classic case was this guy we knew about that would buy clothes at LL Bean and return them and get new stuff every season. Anazingly they tolerated this for quite a few years until the sent him a letter declining any future business.

I'm not sanctioning being dishonest. Not at all. And I try to stay out of these type threads........ But it really does blow me away at how many super righteous people come out of the woodwork and start pounding their perfectness. Why aren't these people just beamed right on outta here straight and into the clouds? What are they still doing on this sewer planet tainted by those folks who buy used broken **** at yard sales or questionably break a tool, and warranty it?

When you break it all down internet forums are all about one thing: people giving their advice to others.

I wonder, why post a thread questioning the folks taking the high ground? Why does that "blow you away"?

It would seem, especially today, people advising others to do the right thing should be applauded, not made fun of.

I don't see why if he's returning a brand new/unused tool in a brand new box with valid receipt with everything matching. It's similar to a return/rebuy which are done all the time.

However if there's a serial number on the outer box that does not match the tools S/N then I agree with you.

Okay, here we go.......Maybe it's all in the delivery......... Myself, I'd quietly reply with something like........ "if it were me......" Or perhaps if you wanted to conduct church, maybe private message them? I think that shaming someone in front of a studio audience, especially with the name calling just really makes the person doing the self righteous bit, look a bit like a "Do Gooder" *******. A thing to make yourself look good, at someone else's expense. Furthermore, I'm fairly certain that each of these chest beaters have done the same **** at one point or another in their lives, and certainly go screwing people in other ways they conveniently fail to see. So really. I mean could elaborate, but such discussions might get offensive to others, but let me just say that I worked with a Hallelujah, praise ya what ever sort of guy that sat there and pounded on another fellow for some ****, much like some are doing here, then this same guy stuck it to me on my pay check, then justified it because of his religion. WTF? Details if you like.
