Thanks so much for taking the time to update on your lessons learned. Maybe someday I'll get to buy you a beer with the $$ I saved from the excellent advice!

Rev: thanks for posting your REVIEW of your build. sounds like overall you did pretty well and your garage looks AMAZING. did your garage cost $110k or is that adding other costs to the property you did that maybe didn't have anything to do with the garage or it's access or foundation?

I still haven't seen an OAK BARREL with any kind of old Stamping on it so hope you find one on your own. also if you might need a bigger vise or another one just shoot me an email or PM cause i'm moving out of my shop/storage and have a few extra at the moment.

How's the smoke over on your side of Puget Sound?

Hey Drive... not too smoky on our side. As for the build, that is including everything, floor treatments and tile work, paint, gravel driveway, infiltration pit for gutters, etc. Everything except the 2 post lift. That was 7k by itself US made.

Pretty much broke now. Still have finish work and trim to do. Just ordered stair treads yesterday that match the upstairs laminate floor. Will be finishing upstairs in September.

Thanks for the offer on the vises. I'm set with the one I bought from you last year. Still have to find a workbenches, considering a plasma cut fitup bench that I assemble and weld.

REV: send me a PM with your email and i'll email you if I see another nice big steel bench to buy that i can't cause i'm moving out of my shop. i've seen a few that were 4x8 or 5x10 with an inch thick steel top for reasonable that I couldn't use or move so if you need one and know how to move it I might be able to help you on the next one I see.

if you were able to pay cash for that nice garage without getting another mortgage that's awesome and no wonder you are broke now.

keep up the great work on it and best of luck with the new treads on the stairs.

which anchor pots did you go with in your concrete?

I found Champ online pretty cheap. I used the new construction plates and set them and wired into my rebar. Fill them with plastic grocery bags and duct tape them closed. Once the crete dries enough to walk on, you will see the light spots where it is cured and just remove the 1/8" or so of slurry by tapping with a hammer and vacuum.

They're amazing and a cheap investment to never need to pull against the structure.

REV: how have you been? any updates to post up cause your garage was looking pretty good?

I haven't seen any old WHISKEY BARRELS since i heard you wanted one for a sink, but i saw one member in Romania make a nice sink out of a nice old Castrol 20-30 gallon metal barrel. i'll post up his link here in case you have time for a look if that might be another option. he posted details and pics maybe a couple months ago:

https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=181551

hope you have an even better 2019 and I bet you are very happy to have this garage/shop/RV build in your rear view mirror.

cheers

Hey Drive, thanks for keeping me engaged on updates. Been a crazy busy year.

Bathroom is 90% just looking for the right shower door.
Loft is 90% just need to trim storage benches and baseboards.

Rest of shop is done and now planning to hang 23 years worth of Navy memorabilia and plaques. Hope your year is off to a great start!

REV: your bathroom looks AMAZING. WELL DONE SIR!!

another GJ member Andy (oldironfarmer) built a sort of truck rotisserie if you want to call it that so he can fab and weld on parts on his old 40's Studebaker.

if you might want to do more than just this one i'll get you a link if you can't find that cool tool Andy made from his scraps.

take care and best of luck hanging all the cool stuff.

Nice progress on many things. I like the barrel sink.
Aren't Jeeps supposed to be rusty?

Thanks, I definitely did not expect the complete cancer when I took it on. I owe the guy big time for helping me design some of my build and teach me to do the electrical. He saved me $$$ so time to return the favor.

Very nice.

I'm especially interested in following along on the CJ8 project.

Cheers! Hoping to get it out of my bay and to paint by summer. He is going to order a tubular frame as I don't have time to master that.

Cool. Have you looked at GenRight chassis? They are pretty nice quality.

Nice work, I like the tile work in the shower. I have 3 showers to redo in my house. Overall the shop is very impressive.

When you build your RV garage bay, plan for your RV then add another 20ft! Lol. I went 40ft deep when I should have went 55ft deep! Now I am moving on to a Class A and I am finding that I really should stay less than 33ft so that we can keep the door closed and walk in front of the RV to gain access. I am now going back to drafting an extension on the RV bay of about 15ft for the future. I don't plan on doing it any time in the next 5 or so years... but I know once I start RVing with a 32ft class A, I am going to eventually want to upgrade to a 40ft.

I also planned all my weld shop electrical on that back wall thinking I would still have plenty room to work on small stuff back there... now if I park the RV, I will have to move it out of the shop as needed to do even the smallest bench work.

Aggravating things that I could have easily spent 10K on during the build that will now cost me double when I remodel. At least the RV section being extended out will break up the large flat face of the building and give it some dimension.

That's how it all starts.:lol_hitti

When I built my first shop in the early 90's I went 34' deep. We had a truck with a camper at the time and I thought I would maybe someday go to a 30' maximum motorhome. That only lasted a few years before I bought the 30' Class A gasser, then six years later blew right past that to a 38' diesel pusher for seven years and now our 40' coach for the past 12 years. When we built our new shop with RV bay a couple of years ago I built it with the mindset that someday I will more than likely have a 45 footer so I planned on being able to park a 45' coach in our RV bay if that day ever comes around.
