Does this road chest look legit to you? Been working on a deal for it over the phone. I am not used to the lack of chrome trim on the drawer handles. I cant make the trip to look at it until next weekend. Just wanted some opinions.

I've never seen one without chrome drawer handles but maybe there was a delete option or it came that way :dunno: ask the seller for the model number from the back of the box to confirm.

But it sure looks genuine. Has it been restored? That would also explain lack of chrome.

Sure looks like a KRA62 to me. SO has used that sticker for years---the drawer layout, structure, looks like a more modern version to me-unless it was restored it looks like it was never used on a service truck. Road service is very hard on tool boxes and IMO these are the best! The trim is available and doesn't last that long on a road box anyway.

By the large center drawer and the small drawers flanking it I would wonder if that box was not targeted toward the machinists trade? I have one similar.

i'd say it's a genuine SO

probably an older version, with a newer snapon logo/ badge

snapon changed the box logo from the old cast rectangular metal one to the plastic "script" logo around '84-'85

i dont recall if the early road boxes had the drawer trim, seems like the later ones did have it.

My thinking to the drawer flip flop maybe the hard life these boxes were design for. I true road box gets thr **** beat out of it and these boxes are built to take it. The chest weights just sort of 200 lbs empty. I wonder if they saw failures with the top drawer mounting from boncing. I have a 62c with the drawers on the bottom and the frame work for the drawer slides is boxed in, something I never saw on simalar dawer designs. For me the drawer layout works great. Mine lives aeasy life on top of 1022 the little drawers are at a perfect height. By the way, 100% SO, why the chrome is missing I don't know.

Seems like the consensus here and with others that it is a true SO road chest with the chrome strips removed for whatever reason. It looks to me like it has the old style drawers from the early 80s without the chrome in the configuration of the late 90s. Strange to say the least. Looks like me and $700 will part ways next weekend!

What does the decal in the center of the lid read? Something like "Heavy Duty Head Diesel"? That isn't original with the usual KRA62.

Maybe it was built under government contract, OEM or large maintenance company.

In any case, if you don't want it, I do!

Looks like the right decal to me, pretty sure it says "Heavy Duty Road Chest".

The large deep drawer in a machinist box if for the machinist hand book. People copy that box and never make the drawer the proper size. At leat that is where I put my hand book 45 years ago and it is still there. Eveyone should own a copy. It is full of good information for all of the trades.

The reflections in the paid are telling me that it is not a Snap-on box. I would check with snap-on. The reflection is dull and Snap-on paint is hevay, hard and has a glaze that really reflects.

I say this because I have been a street person all of my life. I go to swap-meets and buy and sell. I have almost seen it all.
The mexicans take cheap jack hamers that come in the box. They look like the Bosch. They take labeles form Bosch cut outs or print them up and put them on all kinds of tools and boxes. They take a $50 new tool in the box and well it for $150 with the stickers on. I have had them try this on me and I have seen it and called them on it. I also had a friend get taken. People put stickers on things all the time to get a high price.

I would start looking at truck boxes of all brands and see if you can come up with a match. It could be a repaint. but it looks too good for that.

My guess is that it is not what it looks like if no one has seen the box before.

Be careful. Look in old Snappy catalogs. My bet it is a fake.

I am sure it is genuine. I own two, Snap on , Heavy duty roadchests. Both bought new off the truck. The first in around 1994, just after they swapped the drawer configuration upside down. The second three weeks ago. The trim is aluminium, crimped on to the drawer pull. My old box has some missing.

Do you have any pictures of yours that you could share? I would really like to see one without the trim before I pull the trigger on this one./

I am starting to doubt it myself. I do not see any sort of shift/manufacturing decal on the back of the box like I am used to with the other KRA and KRL boxes I have had. Would the number be stamped on the box anywhere?

Tried to get the guy to validate the box by giving me the numbers on it or a picture of the stamping/sticker. Suddenly it isn't for sale anymore. Guess that answers that question.

Must have been a scam, there is no doubt in my mine that was a kra 62. I own the box, know it well and would be the last box I would give up. Might be burried with it.

. With or without the roll cab?

That's a good idea---pretty sure my ashes will fit in my KRA59A!

That's a bummer the deal fell thru for the road box--I hardly ever see them for sale and would jump on one for more $$ than your seller was asking!

That or he was just trying to get rid of the thing, and didn't want to deal wih a problem buyer if he had other buyers lined up. I've done the same thing when selling on CL, and sometimes it just isn't worth catering to someone who looks like they might end up being a problem.

The OP mentioned in post #8 he was going to pull the trigger next weekend for $700--I assumed that was the agreed on price and the deal was done.

The large deep drawer in a machinist box if for the machinist hand book.

That's "Machinery's Handbook".

There was (is?) a great old magazine called "Machinery", and they collected a lot of the info that been presented in it, into "Machinery's Handbook".

Then the handbook took off on it's own, and now includes most of the information a machinist will need.

Note that the handbook changes over the years, my 1946 edition has much more information on threads and threading, while my latest edition has lot's of stuff on CNC. So depending on what kind of machining you do, you may not always want the latest edition....

I recently picked up a 1954 edition of Machinery's Handbook to pass on to a friend. It had nothing on Metric to speak of. My 1975 edition has a separate index for Metric. This is to demonstrate the difference in the editions. I believe that having an older edition available is important as so much had to be dropped in order to keep the size the same.

The paper became thinner in the later editions in order to keep the same outside dimensions while adding pages. It wouldn't have been acceptable to make the book too thick for the drawer!

The guy was asking $700. I agreed to pay him his asking price without any argument. Would have been worth it. I came here after the fact due to all the red flags raised by the box itself. No sooner than I asked him a few simple questions, he killed his deal with me. I didn't bother him multiple times. Just a simple question.

I had planned on going to see the box anyhow. I just decided to ask the questions before I wasted the fuel to look at it.

Sorry it didn't work out for you.

Those KRA62s are excellent boxes, maybe the strongest ever built, but unless you intended to put it on a service truck, there are similar size Snap-on boxes which will do the same job on the bench for 1/3 the money.
