Ugh....made the mistake of visiting the Greg Smith showroom on my day off today. Big mistake. Didn't quite pull the trigger yet, but I think after I do my taxes this weekend, I will.

Man I'm excited for you on the lift (and a little jealous - I want one bad!)

Can't wait to see it all come together in your shop. That will be such a great feature.

Are you assembling it yourself or having it installed? I'd like to put a 4 post together but getting it off the truck and into manageable pieces seems difficult.

Thanks! One of my close friends and I are actually planning on splitting the cost of the lift, so we're talking about that now. The lift is $1,795, and they said it will fit in the back of my pickup, which is great. They will load it right in for free. But like you said, we're a little worried about getting it off the truck once home, and muscled into place. For an extra 600, they will deliver and install it. This includes the cost of the hydraulic fluid, which he said was close to $100, which we would have to purchase anyways. I also don't have a hammer drill to set the anchors, which would be an added cost. Plus, there is the piece of mind knowing that a professional installed it.

I'm just struggling, because I did every single thing in the garage myself up until this point! I hate paying other people for labor. My wife is also of the strong opinion that a professional should do it...and we all know that they're the boss haha...

That's a great price. I'll have to check that website out sometime to shop around.

I know what you mean - I really like doing it all on my own but now and then it might be worth it to hire out. That happened to me yesterday - had a couple painters do my 2 story living room. I really wanted to tackle it but they knocked it out so fast and with such better quality that sometimes I'm learning to pick my battles.

For $600 you'll be very happy you didn't have to wrestle it and install it..
Minus the $100 for hydraulic oil it's $500...
Sometimes it pays to get the pro...
I picked up my mid rise with a truck that had a lift gate and it was hell getting that off

Yeah I just got off the phone with him...we're going to just pay the money to have it installed and be done with it. The kicker is if we go through the hassle of picking it up ourselves, wrestling it off the truck, then change our mind and decide to have them install it at a later date...the price is still $600 because they basically just drop ship it to my house instead of their warehouse.

Also, I was able to get the LED lights installed under the cabinets finally today. I also don't think I posted a photo of the entire bench after completing the drawers, and installing all the cabinet/drawer hardware...so here it is. Threw together a quick clamp rack out of some scrap plywood I had laying around too, on the left. Need to paint it still, but it will do for now..

The finished bench area looks great.

Now that is a beautiful bench! Love the lights.

Thank you both! I am very happy with how it turned out.

How about a shot of your clamp rack to the left of the cabinets?
I just may have to steal that

Sure, I will grab one next time I am out there. It's a pretty simple design since I just built it from scraps, but there are many nicer designs out there.

In other news....the lift has been ordered! It will take about 3 weeks for delivery. I am excited to say the least, it's been my dream for a long time.

Your cabinets turned out great! The color scheme works well also.

I know what your saying about wanting a lift. I am in the middle of an engine swing and while I was under the truck on a creeper knocking dirt off in my face... I was ready to invest in a lift myself. I looked at the Atlas lifts also, but may settle on a Challenger lift.

Thanks for the sharing your shop.

I hear ya... and I keep hearing it doesn't get easier as the years go by :) I have a bad knee (snapped my ACL, PCL and MCL, long story...) so it's not the most comfortable thing for me to crawl under cars anymore.

Plus, I figured the sooner I get the lift, the quicker I'll be able to get my return on investment with all the vehicle repairs that will be needed in the future.

Mr. Roboto,
That lift is going to be great! I'm envious of the space and headroom to have a fixed full height lift. I'm with you on the bad knee's, college lacrosse did me no favors. Now that I'm over 40, crawling under cars is much more of a pain. Literally!

Can't wait to see it installed.

Cheers,
Chris

Congrats on the lift order! Having a lift has been a life-long dream of mine as well. It makes almost every vehicle/equipment repair so much easier. I've used it for working on 4wheelers, lawn mowers, and obviously cars....why a great tool!

What model did you end up getting?

Thanks! It should be installed about one month from today. I'm eagerly awaiting it's arrival!

I ended up with the BP9000, and am having them install it. It will be nice to let someone else do the work for a change

I installed mine. It wasn't that bad, the baseplate ones are even easier as the cylinders are pre installed and you don't have to carry the top bars up a 10' ladder.

You will wonder how you ever worked without one and will refuse to work on the ground ever again.

I went back and forth over weather or not to do it myself, but the price they gave me was for delivery, installation, fluid, and anything else needed for the installation, and it seemed very reasonable to me. So I said what the hell... I'm sure my back will be thanking me later  I also do not own a hammer drill for lagging in the concrete anchors. At this point, I just need to run a 220V plug over to that bay and they will do the rest. Kicking myself for not doing that ahead of time.....oh well. Good thing I boxed in the access cabinet around the breaker box.

And I hope that's the case, crawling under vehicles got really old years ago!

Great build. You even managed to drag my first post out despite being around the forums for years.
I started my garage at the end of last year and i see a lot of similar ideas, i have the near on the exact same cupboards as you although i had to spray mine black.
I am also trying to do all of the work myself but with a busy job and family to keep happy i am finding time in the garage a struggle!
I have only plaster boarded the ceiling but that has taken an age on my own, yours must have taken weeks!
Keep up the good work.

Thanks for reading through, and for coming out of hiding to post! haha.

It did take me quite a long time to do all of the sheetrock, tape and mud. I am certainly glad that part of the project is behind me now. I started hanging the strapping on the ceiling at the end of April in preparation for the drywall, so it's taken me 10 months of work to get to where I am right now. I too found it difficult to devote time out there in between work and family, but even an hour or two here and there really does add up.

You should start a build thread for your garage. The motivation of everyone on this board really was a nice help to keep things rolling. Sometimes, I'd feel like giving up for the day, but then I'd think "No, I need to finish this one task so I can update my thread". It sounds silly, but it helps.

A few have asked for a close up of the clamp rack. Like I said, I am not proud of it since I threw it together out of scraps, and there are much nicer designs online, but here it is. I still haven't painted it yet either.

The clamp rack works great and is a terrific use of space, Roboto. And, it will get painted when you get a free moment. I'm sure your OCD, I mean attention to detail, won't let it go for long. One thing... When you do paint it, can you do something about the piece of painter's tape that has been by the electrical panel cover door forever? It has been killing my OCD!

Just kidding... The place is looking great, as always. Not too much longer and you will have a lift! How great is that!? :pimpflash

Cheers,
Chris

Thanks Chris! It will be painted soon, probably this weekend! That piece of tape is still there because I added the wood piece to it's left because I decided to split the upper portion up into 2 cabinets instead of one really tall one. So, I had to add an extra bit of face frame as a result. It's in primer now and needs to be painted the light gray of the upper walls. I haven't cracked open that can of paint for a while because all of the painting I've done has been in the lower wall darker gray. In other words, I'm being lazy, but it's bugging me too!

And yes, they just called me this morning to confirm the lift installation date. They're coming on March 24th... I am excited, to say the least. I took the whole day off of work :willy_nil

Roboto, this is a really nice shop. I think I am going to make something similar, as I have some kitchen cabinets which I need to throughout any way.

Where did you find the signs? I am a big fan of Milwaukee and would like a sign like that.

I am also going to install LED shop lights :)

Thank you! Believe it or not, I actually grabbed that sign out of a pile on the side of the road that said "free". I couldn't believe it!

Wow, that is nice. I see them on eBay for approx USD 80 or so. Would be a nice addition to my garage/workshop :)

I was pretty excited when I found it, I never get lucky and score anything good on the side of the road. It was in the middle of nowhere in northern NH too as I was passing through, which is probably why it hadn't been snagged yet!

The clamp rack looks great.

Thanks! I actually meant to post this picture for Chris (NedNorton) I finally got around to painting it. The piece of painters tape that was bugging him is still there, though  I need to paint that piece of the face frame and then remove it!

With my lift coming in a few days, I needed to make some space. I haven't posted many pictures recently of the right half of my garage, and for good reason. It's been a bit of a disorganized mess, and I wanted to free up some room for around the lift, both for the install and so that I can maximize the space I will have to move around the lift to work on vehicles. I had a drill press, band saw, and 2 large metal storage drawer units to relocate. I don't have a before picture, but the cabinets used to sit on a bench I had whipped up to elevate them and hold them side by side, but this took up a lot of space. I wanted to incorporate them into one unit with the parts bin organizer I posted a few posts back that I built. Here is what I came up with.

attachment.php

I still need to paint the inside of the parts bin shelf as you can see...I decided I'm just going to rattle can it once the weather warms up (so I can spray it outside). I really did not feel like getting in all those crevices with a brush. I may actually spray paint it red inside, but we'll see how bold I am feeling when it comes time to paint. Otherwise, it will just get sprayed black.

The table saw will live there...for now. It's on a mobile base so it can be moved easily when needed. I also need to get rid of that stupid wooden thing I built to house my compressor 4 years ago (not really sure what I was thinking back then). I built it as a complicated way to hold the air hose reel, but eventually, I am thinking I'd like to get a ceiling mounted unit instead. I also would like to do something about the tall craftsman box, it's empty right now, and I don't really have a need for it at the moment, but it was my grandfathers from the 70s (I think).

Looking good as usual. Don't get rid of the toolbox. Just my opinion but you will need it in the future for more tools as you buy and if it was your grandfathers. I have one of the toolboxes from my Grandpa's machine shop. One of my boys will get it. Love that tablesaw. Its the newer model made right after mine.

Is today lift install day?! :D If so, I just wanted to be the first to give you a Congratulations and a "Hell Yes!".

Looking forward to seeing the install pictures. I hope that you could "Work from Home" today.

PS. Really? Clamp rack painted and you are still killing me with the tape! :lol_hitti

Well I wish I had better news to report, but here's my new lift :(

attachment.php

I did not build my garage, so i was going on the plans the previous owner left me. They specified 4" concrete, but it was not 4" where I wanted the posts to go. It was 4" along the back wall, and grades down from there to get the floor pitch. Now I need to get quotes to get pads poured, or research doing it myself. What a let down :(
